It was a "demonstration" race and was scripted that Mansell would win. The accident occurred because Alonso had lost track of the fact he was on the last lap and thus did not get on the gas out of the last corner. Mansell had expected Alonso to be accelerating out of the corner as normal and was caught out by the slow car.

Yes. Short shifting up the hill too. Look at the poor passengers head bobbing around. At full speed it would probably have come off! A couple of laps in his eyes are saying "ok, make it stop now!" @DDS0297 жыл бұрын
This is what happens when you don't go fullout. It screws up the timing of your moves, and the people you are "racing" with, hasn't a clue on how careful you are going to be. Slowing down changes the downforce, but how much? You don't know, you don't usually go 90%. My guess is that lack of downforce likely caused a "push-loose" condition. the car understeers in, due to the to lack of downforce. When the front tires get mechanical grip, the stab of the throttle caused either an oversteer, or a spinning the rear tires which changed the expected launch out of the corner. Any of these could have happened to either of both cars, at times that were unexpected.

At first glance, it certainly seemed that Mansell simply misjudged the point at which he could either have eased off the gas realising that the car ahead was not pulling away as quickly as he’d wanted it to. The racing line of the car in front of him appears not to have been in question, but more that Mansell was almost too over-eager to pass at an ill thought-out place on the track.

Nigel was definitely going easy on his passenger, way more so than Martin Brundle was on Murray Walker in the McLaren 2 seater. Martin was driving close to 95% flat out with Murray, and Nigel was driving probably at around 60% or less. So yes he got some experience and learn what it felt like to be in an F1 car under acceleration and braking and some minor g going round corners.. but it wasn't anywhere near the experience that Murray had.
