I come back to this many times...as a former student, of Mr, North, it encapsulates for so much of what is impossibly beautiful about Mr. North's playing, the clarity of expression, richness of tone and the elegance of the interpretation...what a gift!

Calling Nigel North a "lute player" or even a "lute virtuoso" doesn't do him justice - he is a true artist.

Mejor solo escuchar. :)

I wonder where they placed the microphones to achieve such an amazing sound. It sounds like they are close to the instrument, but cannot be seen anywhere. Could they be built in? There is also very little reverberation, considering that he is playing in what appears to be a church. My compliments to the ones responsible for the video!

+Jens Paldam I forgot what it's called but it's a certain microphone, mostly used in theatre to pick up audio from long distances yet, retaining high quality.

In about 1988 I had a (guitar) lesson with Nigel on this piece. The guitar transcription was in A so with the lute at 415 we could play it in unison just fine. I think we spent most of the time correcting the changes made by the transcriber ...

Une musique géniale, écrite par un immense compositeur et improvisateur contemporain de J.S. Bach servit par un musicien exceptionnel au talent immense. In english... sorry because it is not a good english. A very great music, written by a very great composer and improviser who was a contemporary of J.S. Bach which is play by an exceptional musician for very great talent.

One of the few lutenists who cares about sound quality and very diverse articulation - chapeau bass! I'm a guitar player and I've always been put off by the poor sound of most lutenists I've listened to... imho, many lutenists don't care about sound, and what you hear sounds like the sound of a cheap $10 kid's guitar. In addition, a very long "stylish" reverb that effectively kills the beauty of lute bass passages and introduces nightmarish chaos to performance ... Weiss's compositions are so spatial and multi-layered that worrying about the sound, bass suppression and articulation seems to be one of the performer's most important priorities.

One of the world's greatest performers, playing in an awesome setting, with great audio engineering and camera work, but the video is spoiled by horrible editing. Go to school somewhere, anywhere, and learn what a fade is, and get a clue about when and why to do a transition between views.

Very nice. I think Weiss is one of the best baroque composes for the lute. I love Bach too death, but for some reason i don't like his pieces on the lute or guitar. Bach works much better on the violin/cello/organ.

Historical tunings often make use of a lower pitch standard than A=440. They are at least a half step lower.
