Swedish lutenist Jonas Nordberg performs the Prélude and Allemande from the Suite in a minor for theorbo by Robert de Visée.
de Visée was a prominent composer and luteplayer working at the court of Louis XIV in France. His solo repertoire for theorbo and baroque guitar has survived as some of the greatest pieces for the instruments.
Jonas Nordberg has established himself as one of the world's most interesting lutenists, praised by critics for his sensitive, colorful musicianship. A versatile musician performing a wide range of styles and repertoire he is in high demand both as a soloist and chamber musician.
Recorded in Vätö Church, Sweden, 9/6-2010.

One can only imagine, in the distant centuries past, that outside of the courts of kings and queens, hearing music played on such a magnificent instrument, much less hearing a small orchestra, would have been a alien experience to the servant and serf classes. But to hear live music on beautifully designed instruments, played by skilled musicians - say in the early 17th or 18th centuries, would have been almost an out-of-body experience for the poor, common man. But a glorious sound indeed for anyone so fortunate to hear it. Even now!

+frank wallace Yes, but you ignore the fact that life is fleeting and all human endeavor is vanity. Here today. Gone in the breadth of an instant, withered and pale. It only makes any sense at all if it is but an echo of a greater eternity. Otherwise, it's all nothing but a cruel joke... So you see, the existence of God is strongly inferred. He holds all the secrets and keeps us delightfully in darkness until the inevitable. If he speaks to us in whispers, then it is shouting in our ears for he does not need to reveal himself at all... So take heart and be infinitely thankful for the gift of the grace of whispers.

I'd certainly hope that anyone who hears a great performance like this on such a wonderful instrument would be appreciative. Fortunately, there are many excellent lutenists now uploading their work to youtube, and hopefully reaching ever wider audiences!

I find standard lutes, theorbos, Renaissance guitars, Baroque guitars, romantic guitars, and modern classical guitars to have their own distinctive sounds despite using the same or similar string materials. It's also a matter of length, gauge, and also the body and size of the instrument itself. Even though a theorbo has single stringed courses, it still sounds distinctly lute-like. It has a big lute body and a long neck with long strings. A romantic guitar is absolutely tiny compared to a modern classical. Renaissance and Baroque guitars have different tension, size, and string length as well in comparison to romantic and especially classical. Romantic and classical are relatively close, yet still distinct.

the tone sounds like a mellow version of a harpsichord (without the bright plucking during the note attack)

Incredible. These instruments and compositions are (imho) the most transcendent and yet richly human the Western Civilization has ever created. Thank you for your dedication and service in keeping this music alive for us.

@Dan Ghofrani I love the santoor music of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. He is an amazing artist; I'd even say a genius. I was introduced to him by recordings from the Real World Records label (especially the lovely "Sampradaya"). That led me back to that famous "Call of the Valley" record he made in 1967 with guitarist Brijbhushan Kabra, and flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia - a sublime introduction to Hindustani Classical music. His son Rahul Sharma has also become a master of this instrument. I'm sure that it is a pain to tune, but the clear, pure, waterfall-like tones of the struck strings are so mesmerizing to me!
