How to escape the cycle of violence and crime in one of the world’s poorest nations? The film is set in Niger and describes the efforts of criminalized youth to turn their lives around and regain a foothold in society.
Education levels are low, the jobless rate is high, and the threat from the terror group Boko Haram is omnipresent. Zinder is the second-largest city in Niger. In the impoverished neighborhood of Kara Kara, many young men join gangs known as "palais”, or "palaces”. Bawa used to be member of such a gang and talks openly about his crimes: one-to-one interviews that pull no punches and at the same time, show how difficult it is to come to terms with one’s own guilt. The scars on his body are a constant reminder of that. Today he’s a father and earns a living riding a motorbike taxi. He’s also a member of a ”palais” of adult weightlifters with a bizarre name: Hitler.
Siniya Boy also lifts weights in the Hitler gang. He appears at the start of the film with the flag of his "palais”. When asked why his life has turned out this way, Siniya Boy has a one-word answer: "Education”. The acute lack of education in Kara Kara also explains the choice of name for the weightlifting gang: Hitler, says Siniya Boy, is a strong guy from America that doesn’t let anyone push him around.
The camera tells its story through the lives of three people. It is there at the prison fence, where Siniya Boy chats with three detained members of his "palais”; and in the red-light district when a sex worker shows her scars - scars that are far worse than those of the men in the film. And this is another of the documentary’s powerful messages: behind every man who has suffered violence, there’s a woman who has suffered even more.

This is an absolutely mesmerizing video. DW seems to dub almost everything into english - which is convenient if that's your primary language and you just want to listen to it while you're cooking or something. But i'm happy this was not dubbed. This really felt more like a film than most documentaries. Great work.

This is great. I appreciate letting the people who live there tell their stories. It's not always bad to have narration giving context and explaining the situation, but I was completely immersed in this. The experience I had wouldn't have been the same if this also contained a journalist giving his account and explanation, narrating his own feels and so on, I'd definitely like to see more documentaries with this style. A just view of crime focuses on the systemic problems. People should be held accountable for their actions, but having people be held accountable shouldn't be mutually exclusive with recognising the bigger picture. I commend DW for giving us the perspective of people who have done some terrible things, it's not an attempt to vindicate, but we can't understand anything unless we hear multiple sides, even if it's difficult.

I may not have experienced the same level of poverty or deprivations and uphill challenges. But I did experienced my share of wants, as an African, gowing up in SubSaharan Africa. Once again, please accept my very warm appreciation to DW and the film crew. Thank You

The everyday people regularly protest this and are met with french backed and armed security forces who will kill them. This dynamic is what keeps their country mired in tribalism and poverty as their resources are used not to develop the state which can bridge the various people into a cohesive yet still landlocked nation-state but to develop other more wealthy states thousands of miles away, but I guess it's their own fault?? Interesting situation in all Africa: Government want to implement Western standards, such as legal systems, without undertaking Western responsibilities, such as creating enabling environments for entrepreneurship to thrive and providing government services. Until then, Africa will always be in a hole, because those with money can buy their way around the system, and usually, they're the ones that commit the worst crimes of all by collaborating with former colinisers and other thieves. For this reason, public service is almost the only sure way out of poverty, and because they don't pay well, the already suffering public is further taxed through bribes, refusal of service, and general unfairness. I think the solution is to reinstate precolonial systems, and then start building from there. In this way everyone gets a fair chance at success.

It is very tragic to see the great land of Africa with such rich ancient history and cultures has been reduced to extreme poverty, backwardness, extremism, tribalism, religious fanaticism. The problems of Africa are not just due to White Colonialism. They have blame in past history but present situation is more due to the nation's internal cultural backwardness, addictions, illiteracy, bad politics, crime and corruption. Hopefully, the people will awaken to assert their rights of development and work towards progress in times to come. Regards! Happy New Year To All! 🥰🙏

The west is partly to blame for the misery in Africa, don’t get angry when they turn to China and Russia. We in the west are not doing enough to improve their standard of living. Let me explain, instead of shipping all their natural resources out of the country how about developing industries from these resources and then ship the final product out of the country. Why can’t the oil rich nations of Africa be like Saudi Arabia. Stop giving them hand out and teach them how to fish.

Colonialism is far from innocent but it is not the real problem of African nations. The real problem is tribalism, entitlement and laziness. All the 19th and 20th century colonizing powers, but especially the Belgians and the Germans, were brutal tyrants that were never shy to commit genocides of the local populations. The Holocaust of the Herero and Nama people by the Germans was perpetrated before the Final Solution of the Jewish people. However, if truth be told, everything of value these countries still have today are relics of their colonial past. Railroads, administrative buildings, hospitals and roads that were built by the Europeans still stand and serve today. In contrast, past the withdrawal of their colonists, all they have today is corruption, nepotism and tribal hatred. And no nation can survive on those.

2nd biggest continent in the world and 400 years of colonial conquest and rule has messed up Africa real bad, it's gonna take at least another 100 years to see progress i reckon! This is from someone with both african and european blood, plus all the different tribes! What Africa needs is unity and corporations involving chinas and european interests to leave them alone...

Wow, what a great video. I love that there's no narration. I usually hate DW because I feel many of their documentaries are biased. But I think it's the narration in other DW videos that make me feel the videos are biased based on my own cultural biases. For example, in other DW documentaries, the narrator has a male voice that's indistinguishable for the most part. Yet, as an American, to me, the accent of the narrator sounds like a native German-speaking man who's fluent in English, and this makes me suspicious, culturally speaking. So, without a narrator, this video is so much more believable, IMO.

@chewiirull because Americans are very provincial, and they usually are dubious of those with a foreign accent.

@chewiirull you misunderstood. I was referring to how the video made me feel. It doesn't mean it's a valid excuse.
