Onyeka was an accomplished Nigerian in all her specializations:, journalism, music, film, activism, and public service, to mention the obvious. A woman who was proud of her heritage and an inexhaustible gift of nature. Growing up, I would sprint to the television or increase the volume of the stereo whenever her songs were being played. Even till the very last moments, she exuded grace, splendor, camaraderie, and vivacity. Sometimes we don't celebrate our heroes and heroines enough until their absence suffices. Find rest in the afterlife as your legacy endures, Ma'am. One love...

The fact that a masterpiece like this has barely 60K views whereas irrelevant content which has no positive impact in the lives of ppl in Nigeria hits millions of views within few months or weeks only tells you how deep the problem is.. An individuals priority often allows you with high levels of accuracy, predict the probability of their success or failure It is clear that as a country we have very misplaced priorities Shout out to everyone watching this video.. Rest well Onyeka.. you are and will always be a legend ❤

I’m awed by her eloquence and professionalism. Great research was put into this production. Nigeria has not changed at all 40 years later instead we have plunged into more decadence in an alarming rate. Same problems plague us but in a magnified manner. What a rot! RIP mama. You were a gem.

As a young journalist and way back 1984, she put up this documentary for BBC.. this is what we are still facing in today's Nigeria. Onyeka Onwenu was a classical representation of the ideal Nigerian woman. She did exceedingly well in music which brought her to limelight at a youthful age.. with a unique Afro genre filled with positive content & impact. She was well read. Had her B. Arts & Masters degrees from Massachusett and New York universities respectively. Did well in journalism while she worked at NTA.. as well as in international expository journalism. Played a positive part in politics during GEJ and Ohakim (Imo state) administrations. Acted in several nollywood movies. A great activist she was.. dwelt so much on curbing copyright theft, artists royalty payments as well as the betterment & education of the girl child. Arguably, no Nigerian musician has got such an avalanche of successful careers put together.. literally she was the greatest talent. Even as a septugenarian, she kept grinding on her laudable trade till last night (30th July, 2024) when she breathed her last. The exit of a legend.. May your soul rest in peace. 🕯🕊

RIP mama..the tragedy of that generation was that they actually saw the potential of what Nigeria could be for a flickering moment when the Naira was stronger than both the pounds and dollars in the 70s. Things just started getting bad from 79 with the transition to democratic rule under Shagari and it never improved again. That generation, the few of them still alive, most of them struggle to reconcile the Nigeria that they saw growing up and the Nigeria of today. It shocks them to the marrow. Unfortunately, Nigeria has destroyed destinies of so much of her children and it's not slowing down. We are at the risk of going down the wrong path for another 40 plus years again if APC is not removed from power and a credible leadership installed that will start tackling our issues from the roots.

Today corruption has undergone a total ‘glow up’

It's shocking to see that nothing has changed....it has rather gotten worse. One wonders if the discovery of oil has been a bane to the Nation. It's unfortunate. Nigerians were not ready to handle the massive wealth that came with Oil...and the theft and corruption continues. But with the end of the oil era on the horizon, Nigeria will one day face the question of their continua existence headlong. Then, only then,....

Look at how people were rushing to board the a plane ✈in the 80's , 2024 we are still very disorganised. Patience is never a virtue in our context. It's been long that we've abandoned farming. It's obvious the reasons for food insecurity in Nigeria.

Onyeka Onwenu's report 40 years ago turns out to be a prophetic outlook of the Nigeria we see today. Nothing, absolutely nothing has changed. So sad!! Which way, Nigeria? Which way to go? I love my fatherland. May your soul rest in peace, Onyeka.

A beautiful recap of affairs in that era. My only grouse with this is why Fela was never mentioned or interviewed: that was a great oversight by both Onyeka and the producers, yet they used his music in the backdrop.

I came across this documentary by 'accident'. It saddens my heart to see that many of the reported issues are just as they are happening today, with a few new dimensions. Is Nigeria cursed?

Just imagine! This was done in 1984. It’s still as true and relevant in 2024 as it was back then. In fact, even truer now!

If you’re watching this in the future. We citizens of Nigeria living in diaspora tried our best and contributed financially to the development of Nigeria by investing and helping families and friends not to be hungry. May God help us all. This is year 2024.

I watched this in the 80's, v early teens.in the UK on the BBC. Was captivated by Onyeka from then. Talented, poised, well grounded and culturally in touch and accomplished. Still shocked that she left after always appearing hale and hearty right to the last. She left this earthly stage on a high, doing what she has alwys done. May she rest in peace.❤🙏🏽

There were so many legends in this documentary. The part where Onyeka was dancing with Tina was hilarious. We really lost a gem. Chinua Achebe was right. We settled for convenience rather than competence. Awolowo was probably the best President Nigeria never had. After many years, the situation is still the same. Farewell Ma

If in 1984 when Onyeka did this documentary that corruption had already served Nigeria breakfast, and all efforts being made to checkmate corruption is not yielding any good results, then the country is destined to be a tale in the moonlight. Unfortunately, Nnem gaa nke oma. May the Almighty God found you worthy of his kingdom. Rest in peace (Ada-Igbo).

I'm seeing this video for the first time. It's 30 July 2024 and I'm in a typical Lagos traffic. It is taking me over 50 minutes to drive from Leventis Busstop, Marina to Bonny Camp. An approximately 8-minute stretch. The issues raised in this documentary are even more prevalent and have become worse today than it was back then. Looking back, 40 years is more than enough to get things right and change the narrative, but this destruction of a nation has persisted because there is apparently a consistent, irreversible and insatiable desire of a few in leadership positions to forestall collective purposeful progress by way of state capture and rent seeking to catapult themselves and theirs into opulence at the expense of the majority. Their primary tool is sponsoring an environment with impunity as the order of the day.
