Agree with you Summer, African parents should raise their daughters to be financially secure, and not just raised them to be good wives. Gone are those days when ladies depend on their husbands for everything which is why our mothers tolerated so much abuse in marriage. Mothers need to expose/enlightened their daughters to different options most importantly, making their own money. Because that is the only power some men have over their wives. Some of these arrogant men will go as far as saying, I pay the rent and provide money for groceries, and clothes for you and the kid. So, therefore, I can send you packing anything I want. When women make their own money no matter how little it is, as long as you are not being stupid of opening the same account with your man, he will be scared to treat you like shit because he knows he does not have any hold on you. You can fly like an eagle if he decides to be stupid.

@@chykedoc space here would fail me to elucidate on the whole idea. Just know that a man and woman become one in marriage. If a man cannot hurt himself, why should he hurt his wife? If a man cannot condone being slapped, why would he do same to his beloved (who is also himself)? Is the woman a kid that needs the rod (slap in his case) to be corrected? If marriage is to be as ordained by God, it therefore means that man is to love his wife as Christ loves the church. Has it been mentioned anywhere that Christ corrects His church by slaps? Think in this line and you would see my drift.

When I wanted to marry my wife, I determined that I will not be pricing her bride price and I did that but her family made things so difficult for me and one of my friends said that's why no man will go through this and tolerate misbehavior. I did not have this traditional mind set that's why I still have great value for my wife and I can't imagine raising my hand against her.

It is important to note that in India it is women who pay expensive 'groom price' and yet it is still the husbands who are oppressing and maltreating their wives also they hate having daughters because they don't want to pay the groom prices. The Indian women do not treat their husbands like they purchased them so Nigerian men can do better regardless of how expensive the brideprice is. Some tribes in Nigeria don't even collect the brideprice and the men still batter them. Abuse is never the answer, whether it be from the husband or the wife.

And I also want to tell you that I have a friend who is going through terrible maltreatment from His wife because she looked down on him just like the way most men do to their wives. I encouraged him to get out of that marriage.

@@nanlesamuel5303 Abuse is not good for anyone, be it men, women or especially the children who are always stuck there enduring and learning wrong things that will later affect their lives negatively when they also later get into relationships/marriage, so it becomes a generational plague. If Nigerians put even half of the amount of energy and dedication that they put into marriage matters especially making judgements on marriages of others that don't concern them into making sure the country has a good government and life improvement systems in place, Nigeria would be a world class enviable country today. The point I was trying to make is that men in Nigeria should not treat wives like property, period! People in marriages and relationships should stop using excuses of bride price, religion, lack of money, being physically stronger etc to maltreat their partners. Men in general should treat the women around them like they would want someone else to treat the mother that gave birth to them whom they love (married or not). Also women treat men well too. Nigeria needs to wake up and be progressive for its people, life is moving on with or without it.

@@joycats4768 I agree with you 100%. I believe we are missing the values we have for each other. I hate it for a very long time when I see abuse in any way. And as you rightly said, the psychological effect on the children is terrible. I have been a victim as I watched my dad do that to my mom. My Father never raised his hand on my mom but I was devastated at the verbal abuse he always rain on her to the point that she will be weeping almost all through the night. That experience make me hate to see most especially my wife in that position. I remember one night I had argument with my wife and I might have said something that hurt her and she wanted to start crying. I didn't know when I just rushed and hug her and then started apologizing because I hate putting someone through that kind of pain my mom experienced. I was so very angry when I had of Osinachi's case. Infact I wish there's something I could do about it because I took it personal even though I have never seen her

@@nanlesamuel5303 Sorry to hear about what you went through and it is not a small thing that in spite of it all you still grew up with so much empathy & care which you are now using positively in your family because it often ends up that the majority of children become receivers or participants of the exact behaviours that they observed at home whether it is negative or positive. It's like we forget that children also get raised by what they observe wherever they are, whether you want them to learn it or not. People wonder why younger and younger children are now interested in how to make money fast but the children observe a system around them with little or no accountability from the government to the citizens and see how they still get respected just because they have all this ill-gotten wealth, so they also want the same thing and yet people act shocked and want to shame the children when the children are just acting out what they see like a mirror reflection of the soceity they are in.

My only daughter that I’ll go for omugwo, that man will regret ever being born if he lays a finger on her 😠. God will continue to bless you Summer and your children. Hey Lovely, I love your mindset. And totally agree with you! “Women want marriages they will enjoy and Not endure” I also think that we need stronger women to raise stronger men. We as women have to demand respect from the men we choose to marry and only then can we have the right foundation to raise healthy kids. Men need firm hands and lessons on how to treat and respect women. We women as so special as we are given the gift of birthing children. No man should ever think himself superior to a woman and women need to demand love and respect or stay single.

The church in Nigeria made unmarried women feel incomplete let us take mother's day where married women wear one color of wrapper and unmarried women no matter your age wear another color this can have a psychological effect on any unmarried woman and she is ready to settle for any man regardless of his character

Summer, I think the culture of marriage makes a woman has changed or should I say is changing. No woman of this new generation would raise her girl child to be dependent on men. The children we are raising these days would not wait for their husbands before they do things. That is why they are getting education.

Dear summer I do enjoy your narrative over some issues here but you see this one, there are certain things that are missing that you need to put correction on. I'm not in support of domestic abuse in any manner, I never lay hand on my wife and I will not but what works for me may not work for another person, so there are certain things that women needs to understand when it comes to marriage abuse, like you said God gave man power (physical strength) and woman mouth (mouth strength) which are meant to be use with respect, regard and positively but many women abuse these strength and talk down on their husband as if they are talking to an house boy or they mate, can you talk to your elder brother or your husband mate outside like that? Or you got married to him to disrespect him? pls let's be reasonable here. You see those talk and nagging on him, my sister you are beating him emotionally, psychologically and mentally that has cost many men life out there. Involving in an accident, coming back late at night from bar, not able to handle himself then one day he will lose it. So let talk about this very important and give our marriage a balance. Thank you.

First off, I believe children being force to marry people they don't love, don't know, don't want, and do not want to marry must stop. Second off, I believe the understanding of the bridal price (dowry) this thing does not mean the man owns this bride as if he just purchased a slave. Dowry is compensation for what the head of the brides house hold loses when he gives away his daughter in marriage. Women are NOT SLAVES, WE ARE NOT OBJECTS, WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS THAT DESERVE REAL LOVE, REAL CARE UNTIL Natural CAUSES OF DEATH DO US PART. If this concept can be instilled in boys. Boys grow up to be men. And men grow up to be husbands that will love, respect, and care for their wives. Not be woman beaters, women suppressors, women haters, and women killers.💔
