Wow Bruce this video is lifting the curtain on how these jazz progressions work. I've never seen this kind of online tutorial before, thanks for sharing.

Excellent video. The harmonic options for tunes like this never cease to amaze me. The original composers like Cole Porter sure knew what they were doing, and that's why all the great classic standards are timeless.

This is the 10th video I'm watching now, and finally I got an answer to how to play over bars 9-16 in a cool an simple to remember way👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾. And I NEVER ever could remember the diminished scale as i am a piano player and it's just strange on the piano. BUT THAT TRICK WITH THE TWO MINOR SCALES A TRITONE APART IS SO AWESOME!!! IT solved this problem forever😁😁😁

great lesson as usual...only a question. At 6:30 do I understand that Ab melodic minor works on Gb major ?? (How is possible with G natural in the Ab melodic minor...) . thank you!!
@brucegregori3 жыл бұрын
Correct! You can use melodic minor as a sub for dorian and that gives you a cool augmented vibe to the minor sound. It is a great strategy on this tune but really wo rks well with things like So What to give you some tension over a modal tune. The minor forms come from the augmented forms and that is how the guitar itself is organized. There are 3 minors and 3 majors that come from each augmented triad. So in this case a G augmented (G, Eb, B) can lead to an Ab minor triad by raising the G to an Ab. If you raise one note at a time of that augmented triad you get the two other minor keys. Lowering one note at a time you get the relative major keys. So all in all you could blow 6 keys on that one change! Remember its all about placement and resolution.

Why explain it with Gb major, when it is just modal interchange, borrowing chords from Eb minor (=Gb major) instead of Eb major?
@brucegregori3 ай бұрын
You can use that approach. Looking at it different ways helps you to understand how multi dimensional the harmony can be on a tune like this.
@KBMars3 ай бұрын
@@brucegregoriTrue. Cole Porter's harmonies may have been chosen to illustrate the text, night and day, minor and major of the same key. It's easy to remember that way.

I do a more comprehensive "playing" analysis on my direct video site at www.brucegregori.com - that is where you get more in depth play. There is so much to Night and Day - that I wanted to make sure it is clear where all of the reharmonization is coming from. Check out the site and let me know if you might be interested - also I will doing a live video clinic next week where you can get some of this free.
