Hi Sandra... After years of hardly touching my guitar, a friend visited me, saw my Eko Model C-29 S hollow body guitar, which I bought back in 1987 in Barcelona. He took it for repair (it is in perfect condition, but some parts suffered the hardship of time), and now I am back to playing. I discovered your channel, which is just what I need. Started playing some of the Joe Pass Licks (I am still very rusty, and. my fingers don't respond the way they used to). Now I am hooked! Thank you for the great lessons. Can't wait to discover new gems!

Sandra thanks for your very nice take on a few of Joe’s licks. I like how you “disassemble” the chord line in modes. Joe was very fluid and flexible in his playing and you are right- he did love his #5 and #11.😀
@GuitarversumSandraSherman5 жыл бұрын
It was interesting process for me, bc I want so much aware of his #11 thang 😊. I transcribed Joe's take on "For Django" for my Masters degree in 2004. What I found there were a lot of a degree triads, bit so by #11. When I snaked dozens of lines in the preparations for this video tutorial, I found that every second one had #11s incorporated in a way that was very unique. Transcribing solos and lines makes a lot of sense 😊

What does herb Ellis mean in his lesson videos when he says he plays from within chord shapes or uses chord shapes to simplify his approach the guitar? In his videos he will play a chord and then appear to not play within the physical confines of the chord shape? What am I missing?

My earliest first every video was a Joe Pass VHS Tape (showing my age) that cost me a fortune at the time. Now the damn thing is available on KZbin for free. Ha ha. He was among the greats along with George Golla (who I had the pleasure of working with later in life) and Lee Ritenour. It took me decades after that VHS tape before I could really properly play my first Jazz chord but I kept watching Joe and trying. Now here I am watching a Sandra Sherman video to work out what the hell Joe was playing, all whilst trying to retrain a damaged brain to relearn guitar. You can't make this shit up. Joe is an amazing legend. I have to say I found him hard to follow as a teacher/instructor but he knew his stuff and laid the path for many to come after him. Well at least we have you, Sandra. And you're a great teacher, even for an old mashed brain dummy like me. 🤩😉

Sandra thank you for this excellent lesson. So, if i got that right, Joe sees mainly chords on the fretbord and and plays basicly the notes that makes the chord?
@GuitarversumSandraSherman5 жыл бұрын
Hour was all about chords. Just look /listen to his many chord melody intetpretations. Of course he not only played chord tones, but also a lot of scale tones and chronatics. But he always saw the virtual chord on the fretboard and targeted those chords tones.

Looking at your notation of minor 7 chords, you appear to use an uppercase M7 which reads as a major 7. Typically minor 7ths are spelled with a lower case m like, Em7. Don't know if anybody else was confused but I was.
@GuitarversumSandraSherman5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that the Guitar Pro software, which either can't handle Cm7 or C-7 (or im too stupid to figure it out, lol). But the capital lettet M for major is really outdatet. They did that in the 1920s 😊. These days it's usually spelled maj7 or the triangle jszz symbol is used.

I honestly believe Joe didn't give it that much thought... He liked to keep things simple.. and that twice he was just TARGETING the C note ,,, B up to D and down to C... from the beginning, over the C minor, it is Flat 3rd 5th, up to root, 2nd flat 3rd, 5th, Major 7 up to the 9th and down to the TARGET C (the 5th of F9 chord) AND the last B flat note... is actually the root of B flat Major.. for the II-V-I progression in B flat... all that other thinking is all too much... This is only my opinion... P.S. years ago I met Joe in Denver... I brought all of my Joe Pass Books.... kinda wowed him... thanks.... Don....
