Well after a year I finally finished both this game and this video, and that’s a wild hot take therm 😅 I mean the whole game subtly led up to that ending?
@sofillustration Жыл бұрын
The ending reminds me of something I heard once that stuck with me (spoilers): "Conservative" values, not just the political kind, but the idea of trying to desperately keep things exactly the same forever is in conflict with the nature of the world always changing. So, trying to keep things the same (often rooted in fear) will always be more violent than accepting change. But, change is uncomfortable and sometimes painful. The cultists are trying to keep the town the same, while Mae is grieving her world changing and "becoming shapes". The fear turns to anger, the anger turns to violence. (Cult killing people and Mae beating up Andy Cullen). However, Mae is the thesis, still caught between holding on and letting go. When Mae rejects the cult she is accepting change. She knows that change is going to hurt but she is rejecting fear and violence. Her conclusion is that feeling pain and grief is better than hurting others to keep things the same.

Well said! I also love the fact that, after the cult is destroyed, a new taco shop opens up in town where the old restaurant was. Not only is that an example of embracing change but also proof that the town needed change, and embracing it allowed the economy to bloom. At first I was dissatisfied that the losing-the-house plotline wasn't closed but after some thought I realized the taco shop is direct proof that they'll be just fine

Not done yet but I really enjoy this game. Never heard of it before this video so it’s been a welcome experience! From the part where I’m at, I don’t think Mae should’ve been the only one to apologize. Her and her mom are in the wrong. Planning Mae’s entire life for her and getting mad when she didn’t do exactly as her parents planned hits too close to home. Yeah, from her mom’s point of view she just up and quit (disregarding those years of time and money that her parents put into her), while also refusing to acknowledge the fact she did indeed abandon all that effort. But her Mom did what she thought was best, not what Mae wanted. From where I am, she got stressed from life and got passive aggressive (if not flat out aggressive) with Mae. Mocking the stuff Mae genuinely said to her in regards to why she left and ignoring her concerns regarding the house. Then pulls the ‘I’m busy’ card when Mae tries to interact with her at work. Her dissatisfaction with Mae’s unwillingness to even talk abt why she dropped out is completely understandable, but she’s not in the right. Mae’s partially makes a point when she essentially tells her mom that she’s trying so hard to push Mae towards going to college because nobody else in their family made anything of themselves worth note. Not in college but I’m almost there and in a similar situation and this feels so accurate. Not 1 to 1, of course - but the pressure of needing to be that perfect ideal (leaving behind everything I am, everything I wanted to be or could’ve been), needing to venture past where none of my own successfully made it just to make others happy is so harrowingly familiar. And IMO the action of Candy pushing Mae towards that path was not and is not the issue, her execution is! I’m not saying this to pretend Mae’s a storybook heroine either, and it’s fine that she isn’t! She’s ignorant, avoidant, hot-headed, and morally grey while also being polite, attentive, and cheesy. People consistently look at her current self as a downgrade to who she was (and they don’t view who she was too kindly either), and it’s explored through the game if she actually sucks as bad as some of the people make her out to be or is just highlighted because her worst points were just THAT bad. I’m excited to finish this video because I really love games like this and your commentary is always nice! I hope you enjoyed making this vid as much as I’m enjoying watching it.
@orioncie Жыл бұрын
I also adore all the characters and their interactions! It’s nice that everyone has both realistic and overly exaggerated traits to give them some three dimensional ‘oomf’.
@orioncie Жыл бұрын
Ok, I finished the video and I absolutely love it. Not writing another essay but among my previous one and other points I will not blab about, the way hopelessness + the flat out inability to move towards change in displayed almost had me tearing up ngl. Kinda feeling hopeful after seeing both an accurate representation of and the subsequent denial of the melancholy/downright despondency that pops up and messes me up sometimes.
@Jamjamsart Жыл бұрын
when you realize what is wrong with Mae, her mom's take on her leaving school is even worse. Mae is mentally unwell in many ways, one being she has two dissociative disorders called depersonalization and derealization, which can make a person's entire reality change and shift completely. unmedicated, this can be harmful to themselves and others.... and obviously Mae is very much not getting real help. her parents should have taken things seriously with the baseball incident and taken her to a real therapist and get her properly medicated. but they didn't, and that's why Mae had to come home. she desperately needs help, not a lecture.

I had almost the same take away when the game came out. I related to Mae and her friends and all their struggles. But now I'm 27 living in a small town watching things fall apart. Old people clinging on to a past that never really existed and that they pray will come back. Decaying factories and struggling people trying to make it. An uncaring nearly impossible to understand system acting as some sort of old God. Mae coming to terms with losing the familiar things and that it'll hurt, but she can move on and build something new.

honestly, the ending feels like the hardest this truth the game gets you to swallow, ive been angry alot in my life, violent, and awful things have gone down, things that defined my world have ended in the blink of an eye. huge things happen, and then they just... end. youre forced to look upon a world where that thing doesnt matter anymore, forced to move on. and even in tragedy, moving on is the scariest thing i can fathom.

yknow i used to think that the end of the game came out of left field and didn't have much relevancy before but know that i'm older (not really, still in my early twenties but i was a teen when i first watched a playthrough) it fits into the narrative. there are places fucked over by lack of growth and development of the town/city, help from the government, and poor working conditions (no unions, no livable wages). It was talked about with Bea's storyline, Mae's parents, you see it discussed with the council with their background dialogue. I think Possum Springs resembles a town from the Rust Belt in the US, where it's just filled with cities that are going to shit because they're getting no help. The cult in the third act reminds me of groups like the Klan in the sense that they want to keep everything stagnant and never changing. I'm probably not being coherent and rambley but i hope the message comes across.
@compassrose14668 ай бұрын
I wanna also add when Mae is talking to the cat she’s told straight up “you weren’t chosen.” And is basically told she’s just here. People will believe in things in order for things to make sense to the point they’ll do anything to make their life “good” again. I believe the “cute girl” Mae meets also knows something of the cult due to the handshake they do which is interesting. It makes me wish more people dig into the story of the game since it’s all so interesting. It also makes me wonder if Mae’s Aunt knew about the cult and it’s why she keeps trying to steer Mae away and keep her out of trouble.

2:28:18 idk, itd be harrowing to go through childhood having the college decision already made for you & pushed onto you right? like mae probably didnt ever want to go to college. and maybe her parents always talked about it while she was growing up & that gave her a skewed idea of what being "successful" or "something" is. which in turn made her feel like trash about unnecessary stuff

I loved it when you streamed this game - it's hilarious, tragically, deep.

40 minutes in and I was like "wow he sounds so much like the characters" than I remember he's just reading what they say

Extremely painful watching Therm misunderstand how the game works and missing enormous loads of content because he doesn't understand that people asking you to hang out and giving you a Yes or No option is the organic way of letting you back off to continue exploring. I think he almost understood that when talking to Gregg but then thought that the no dialogue would lock him out of content somehow? So ironically to avoid that he locked himself out of an enormous amount of content sjsbjsjdnsjdj

No one else is entertaining enough that I would have to pause an Opera GX ad so that my partner wouldn't miss it when he went to the toilet 😂

This is ironic because I just finished playing Night in the Woods. For the third time. It’s not an obsession. It’s an addiction.
