Not a big issue but for the first moon shot you showed you listed the photo data as 800mm f/6.3. The lens’ minimum aperture at 800 is f/9. With the teleconverters that becomes f/13 and f18 but you were still showing f/6.3 for those shots as well. Otherwise a good video showing the capabilities of this lens. It’s always hard to tell with any certainty on YT but it seems to produce fairly nice images even with the teleconverters.

Thanks for showing the quality of the image stabilization on this lens. Even on a tripod, image stabilization is important. I shot a mini-documentary and had to take some clips from long range. My first trip out I had to hike, so I stupidly tried to go light with my tripod and head. I also brought a Sigma EF 150-600 lens. That was the best lesson ever for why you need a really solid tripod and a really good (true) fluid head - but also how important GOOD image stabilization is. The coastal wind made for jitters, and even though it was a pretty expensive head I couldn't get smooth pan/tilt movement no matter what I tried. That was about a $600 3-Legged Thing tripod and a Manfrotto 502 "fluid head". And the Sigma lens has their own optical stabilization. None of the video was usable. The entire day was a throw-away. The point is, not all IS is created equally, and a fully-extended tripod is very much subject to vibration. I still think that there are going to be limited opportunities for shooting hand held with this lens - which isn't a crime, it's just about expectations. But yoru old footage with the 800 f/11 shows that even a tripod isn't a silver bullet against jitters. Your new footage with this 200-800 actually told me a lot about the image stabe on this lens, and I really appreciate it. The image stabilization looks very solid, especially for a lens at this price. That kind of informatoin helps buying decisions, so thanks again.

That is so true. Cheap tripod just don't provide any wind protection and vibrate so easily.

This is still a great showcase for what to expect in winter photography with the 200-800. Ontario still has plenty of over-wintering species that are great to shoot. I am very excited to try it out in the Kingston/ Lanark Islands area of Ontario. Especially excited for PEC and Presqu'ile in the spring!

Don't get too hooked up on aperture when it comes to astrophotography, almost all astro telescopes have very small apertures in comparison to normal photography needs People who complain about aperture should get a 600mm F/4

To be used to shoot in the deep forest and woods with 200-600 f5.6-6.3, the aperture is more than important here. Better find other option for low light shooting
@OrdinaryFilmmaker
@OrdinaryFilmmaker 7 ай бұрын
We all know that in a deep forest, nothing less than f2 is required for video... stills can be more forgiving but even f5.6 isn't enough.

years ago taking stills on the 21MP EOS 5D mk III using the EF 400mm f/5.6L I can tell which birds were in the sun or shade by how grainy they look as the ISO was raised. I haven’t yet tried again with the 45MP R5 and adapter.

Great video young man. I was waiting for something like this. Thank you. I enjoy using the 100-500 on my R7 for the moon which has given me my best moon shots also at 800mm with crop. With that said, I think your moon is sharper. with little better detail. I was just wondering what that 200-800 would do on the R7? Maybe you can try that some time. Keep up the great videos! Happy Holidays! Thx

be interesting to compare with the EF primes 500mm and 800mm. Years ago I read that the $15K 500mm prime “holds it’s own” compared to equivalent astronomical lenses.

@@OrdinaryFilmmaker I used your link to Amazon and spent about $6400 on a TV and speakers. I hope it works. I hope you get something out of it. It would be nice if there was a confirmation on the website that showed that sort of information. Anyway, I tried to help out a little because I enjoy your channel. I will be ordering the Canon R5 mark 2 whenever that happens. I pretty much decided that that will be my camera. I'm sure the specs will be great, whatever they turn out to be. It will be much better than the Canon 7D it is replacing. I think I will get the camera and maybe two lenses to start with. The 28-70mm F/2 is a definite.

You don’t need to set manual focus really. I find the EOS R range just snaps on the moon perfectly compared to when you had to manually focus with DSLR. Try it.. (Works on R5, R7 with 600/11 in auto just fine)

I've tried it and every now and then it pulses. Not often, rarely, but it's enough to ruin the shot. Going manual eliminates the risk.

Hey Simon, yeah, nice moon shots ! and great to see you having this much fun 👍. Maybe Duade Paton had even more fun birding in Australia in excellent weather, he just couldn't stop smiling. So, I've also ordered the lens earlier this week at my local camera shop. Just a silly question: how long is the lens foot, and how far apart are both screw holes on it ? I want to order the right arca swiss plate for it, and I guess the foot might be close to 12 cm, can you check this for me ? Of course, it would have been much better when the big camera brands provided arca swiss compatible lens foots ..

Wow the moon looks great, about 40 years ago I used a 400mm 5.6 Vivitar lens with a 2x converter my exposure 400 ISO 1/²⁵⁰ or 1/500 with tri x. I think I would purchase that lens. I do a lot of wildlife and things far away. Think this would be a perfect zoo lens. I miss tinkering in the photo darkroom. Simon thanks for sharing your images.

The tele vonverter doesn’t increase the aperture by two times. To f18 it increases it by two stops, get it right boy f9 to f13. The Extenders does douple the power x2 800 to 1600 , but not the aperture x2 f9 to f18 😅😂

why you didn't try to use any of the 8k resolutions?
@OrdinaryFilmmaker
@OrdinaryFilmmaker 7 ай бұрын
Good question. I have in the past, but I didn't notice a huge enough difference between 8K and 4K HQ. When you pixel peep, 4K HQ is almost as detailed as 4K HQ when shooting the moon or planets due to atmospheric turbulence. To see the detail of 8K, ones needs to be closer to the subject to pick up the extra detail in things like feathers and fur.

For large celestial objects like the moon, the nebula in Orion, the milky way, the Andromeda galaxy, a long telephoto on an equatorial with computer drive can give great images with a good camera. But for small objects like planets, a telescope will deliver a lot more than a plain camera. For the milky way, you can even use super wide lenses if the coma levels are low. A telescope can also use a guide scope for even better resolution. Maybe you can use a guide scope with an ordinary camera, but I have never seen that done.

Did you get Jupiter’s moons? It will require a composite image, of two different exposures.
@OrdinaryFilmmaker
@OrdinaryFilmmaker 7 ай бұрын
Yes I did. But did not expose properly for them. I find the best way to pick them up on shoot is to overexpose and they show up without any effort in post, but this overexposes Jupiter. I then create a mask and overlay video/photo of Jupiter than is exposed properly and it looks pretty good.

Get a bathinov mask and you nail the focus every time you shoot. Don't fordert to let the optics cool before shooting. Greetings from a astrophotographer ;) maybe invest in a small startrakker with this combo you can get good results when you Film short videos and stack the frames with Software like autostakkert :)
