While whip spiders are arachnids that fall under the arthropod phylum, they're not actually spiders. Whip spiders have eight legs, but the front two have evolved into antenniform legs that extend up to two feet long. These legs wiggle around like whips to gather sensory information, earning whip spiders their name. The arachnids also have appendages called pedipalps, which behavioral neuroscientist and National Geographic grantee Verner Bingman describes as being like "pliers with sharp teeth."

Not a spider, but enough to have a mini heart-attack to see one up close suddenly in the wild. 😅

Couldn't agree more. I think spiders are awesome little creature's. And these whip "spiders" are pretty neat, too. But, ever since I was a kid, I have a "thing" about seeing them upclose, especially suddenly. Growing up on a farm, I have seen plenty of awesome and traumatizing events. None less so, then when I was climbing the barn ladder, to the loft. When my head breached the opening, of said loft, I was greeted by a large wolf spider. She was approximately 7 inches from my face, on the loft floor, right at the opening. Since we got the jump on each other, she raised up on her back legs, spreading and elongating her front one's in the air, in that defensive posture that spider's use to make themselves appear larger and menacing. Well, it worked. As she was large enough, thank you, and QUITE menacing. I let out a shriek, letting go of the ladder entirely; plummeting the 16 feet (over 5m) to the packed earth floor below, breaking the fall with my back. It was the closest I had ever come to a spider of that size, let alone being at my face and at eye-level. Also, the first time I knocked the wind out of myself. I was quite certain I was going to die. Not from the fall, mind you. But, from the giant arachnid; that I was positive, was lining herself down to finish the job. Not being able to breathe/move was secondary in my panicked 8 year old brain. But, turns out she was as glad to be rid of me, as I was to her. And we steered clear of each other, the rest of that autumn. Still, to this day, I am not excited to climb a tree, or crawl in an attic, only to be confronted by a large species of anything owning more than four legs (that goes double, when they come packing twice that). 😊 Lol, so there ya go. An (not-so)epic tale, that no one asked for.

Played in it before, avoided it, as much as possible, afterwards.
