Officer who works night shift here. I won't recommend flashlight A over flashlight B because I don't know your situation, but as Karl mentioned there is a marked difference between searching with a light (best done with a handheld) and shooting with a light (best done with a WML). What I will say is that candela is just as important as lumens when looking at potential lights. The goal is to be able to see their hands no matter what, be it though tinted car windows, across a dark field, in an alleyway, whatever. The hands are the most dangerous part of the body.

The daily workhorse (G19) has a light mounted, body extends about half an inch past the muzzle. I realize that the percentile of having to illuminate a target is VERY slim however, if the engagement were to be inside arms length, on the ground etc, that light will keep my weapon in battery; essentially serving as a stand-off device. Glad you touched on weapon lights, they're useful in many ways.

Like you were saying about train how you fight, day or night: My department just had night fire weapons qualifications. Most of us carry pistol-mounted lights, but when it came to night fire, almost no one actually turned on their lights because most of them never practice actually turning on the light when they draw. It's a training oversight, and one that's easy to make.

Mike Seeklander and on a recent Ronin Tactics video from Arcadia PD - Mike and Tu Lam were using a Temple Index technique. I do everything that you said but like how the Light goes where my Eyes/Head goes. Yes, they could shot at my head but with the light shining in their eyes and rounds coming their way. I move immediately after turning off. I don’t reactivate the light until my shooting hand up, firearm ready for target assessment and rounds if needed. Sometimes the FBI Technique takes Time / Practice to get Light Beam + sights to be in the same place upon light activation. The Temple Index seems to be a for sure thing. Really like your Podcasts, hope to train with you some day. Dr. Hull

One of my coworkers is a former NH State Trooper. He told me once that when they were qualifying for night shooting, they would turn their lights on, ID the target, then turn their light off and step to the side and reactivate the light and fire their weapon. The thought process behind this was that the second you turn your light on, you give your position away and by stepping to the side with the light off, you can reestablish some kind of cover under darkness before engaging the threat.

The main issue I've found with gun lights is that the instant you fire a shot in the dark, the weapon light is now lighting up a plume of gun smoke, similar to the effect of high beams in fog. I've noticed that I naturally make the follow up shot from one or two feet to the side in an attempt to see around the fog of the first shot.
@mattb48263 жыл бұрын
That is a good thing, shoot, turn off light, get new angle/cover, then activate light get sight picture/target, then shoot. Range shooting you probably just stand there but don't get into that mindset.

You dont need to carry conceal weapon with light always on if you can carry x300 in pocket.Pistol and holster with lover profile. When lights off" the situation need light on pistol so you simply click it on and you ready to go. The x300 can also be a edc light with that situation or backup flashlight. Only part I disagree with is with a bright WML they all sights become blacked out post and notch night sights become pointless. Night sights are only useful in a very small envelope of dim lighting where you can identify a target but black sights you cannot pick up alignment. One caveat fibers can pick up some light reflected and bounced off walls/ceilings. All my defensive weapons have a light attached, mini flashlight in the pocket, and flashlights all over the house.

Quick question: I see that you have a light on your pistol while it's in the holster, but you also have a light on the left side of your belt that you can quick attach. Is this mainly for easier concealment vs open carry? Dad lives don't matter when it comes to buying and it's always more expensive to buy cheap first. Trying to get all my ducks in a row before I place any orders. Thanks again for your time.

Case study on the benefit of the Offset Position: December 1975 in Visalia, California: a prolific Serial Rapist-Killer known as the Original Night Stalker/Golden State Killer, was on the hunt. The local Police were stymied by this skilled Predator’s meticulous planning and execution; his penchant for self preservation, he NEVER left a single fingerprint, nor did any of his over 150+ victims ever saw his face, which was always covered by a handmade Balaclava. So Police had managed to anticipate his tentative target one night, & awaited his arrival. As the Predator made his way back down a fence-line, into the backyard of a single family home, the Lead Officer pounced, immediately beaming the Stalker with his Flashlight in the Offset Position, and his pistol on site: “FREEZE! Get your hands up!” The Killer, caught off guard & facing 90-degrees left, appearing frozen with fear, reached up with his right hand, and began to lift up his Ski Mask. Likely anticipating the Officers intent on making an arrest, and catching a glimpse of the Infamous Killer’s face, the Officer missed the obscured Killer’s left hand, in which he reached into his left jacket pocket, and while pivoting to his right, brought a snub-nose .38 revolver up to his hip, and FIRED at the Officer, from retention! The lone Police Officer, caught by surprise, fell directly onto his back! The Killer, once again masked, leaped over a 6-foot fence, and disappeared into the night, and was never seen again in the Town of Visalia. Fortunately for the Police Officer, he held his flashlight in the Offset Position, as the .38-caliber round, smashed DIRECTLY into the flashlight, straight through the glass; the Bullet was later found embedded in the D-Cell Battery, at the very backend of the flashlight. This Killer had executed a PERFECT SHOT! Bear in mind, this shooting took place in the pitch black of night, while the suspect was engulfed in blinding white light of the Officer’s Mag Light; and he was firing from retention (at the hip)! That’s some Wild Bill Hickok shit, right there. Fortunately, Officer Bill McGowan only suffered slight shrapnel wounds to the right side of his face, and eye. So, because he got lucky and hit the light, I should use a poor technique? Nope. Now, that said, I still teach this technique as I believe that everyone should be armed with as many various techniques as possible, in case you find yourself in a situation that requires an odd technique. First, master a better technique that more closely mirrors the firearm training that you more often use during the day. Sincerely, thanks for sharing this story, and thank you for watching. TR

Tactical Rifleman: This man was NOT lucky.. I’ve been tracking him for over 10 years (before he was caught). And he was extraordinarily skilled with firearms. This was not the only incident where he proved his aptitude for night shooting (without the aid of lights), and hit his target every time, some at distances up to 25 feet (On a moving target). I appreciate your feedback, brother. I just keep this technique in mind, for use with cases where I cannot move in and immediately kill a target on sight, with the element of surprise intact. I’m a US Marine, and I’ll never look at a weapon-light, fixed to the end of my pistol or rifle, the same way again; at least with use in non-military applications, where I must use verbal commands or attempt deescalation first, prior to use of Deadly Force.

Yo Karl, it's clear you have an opinion on using strobes. I'd really like to hear your thoughts on it.
@TacticalRifleman5 жыл бұрын
I’ve trained with them, with high hopes, but never really had a lot of success with them. Not bashing them, but I personally feel a strobe slows down my ability to ID is the threat warrants deadly force. That said, a strobe feature on your light is a great tool to have in your mental toolbox. However, some/most models make the strobe setting too hard to get to, requiring a “double click” or something similar. This can be mastered with practice, but I just don’t carry these lights enough, because all my EDCs have WMLs. Again, I am not bashing strobes; I just don’t have the muscle memory. TR
@snek93535 жыл бұрын
@@TacticalRifleman Thanks for the great reply, my basic thinking/findings so far is that the strobe function is a little disorientating to me as well, but it may be worth it. Currently I don't have a WML on my EDC, my EDC doesn't have a rail and I work in a non-permissive environment(not illegal, but I'd be fired) so concealment is high priority. I do EDC an Olight M2R Warrior, so here's the choice, the tail cap button has several modes, there's a soft press and a deep press, then there's also two modes on what those do. It can be soft press momentary on and deep press switch on. Or soft press momentary on, and deep press momentary flash. This is the current choice which mode to use, I currently use the latter, making strobe the panic mode as it takes concentration to only soft press. If I have my head together I can soft press for momentary on to ID, if in more of a panic it'll be strobe. FWIW though I've spent a lot of time in party/club type environments and think I'm more accustomed to strobes then most.

@TacticalRifleman5 жыл бұрын
Total BS. You need to be able to identify non-threat, threat, or threat that warrants deadly force. All three are different and all three look alike without a proper light source. That said, many people don’t see the need for a light because they only train during the day. As a Green Beret, I learned that hours of limited visibility are when all the bad stuff happens.
@furcifer82184 жыл бұрын
One potential problem with weapon mounted lights not covered: As cases on the street have recently proven, pointing a firearm at somebody is a felony. Cops "get away with it", but nobody else can. For the rest of us, weapon lights are strictly for known-threat target acquisition; they are not the best plan for target identification, per se. You pull a gun on somebody, it better be because you need to shoot, not just to find out who they are. And not just "pointing" it, either. ANY "weapon-in-hand" or just reaching for one could be interpreted as an immediate threat by anyone else. Especially by some trigger-happy hero you don't even know is there. Again, cops can get away with placing hand on their weapon in the holster in preparation, or advancing with a gun at "low-ready". But anybody else that does that could be rightfully and lawfully perceived as an immediate threat. So don't just "do what the cops do"; that's already got people up on felony aggravated assault charges or killed.

I get what he’s saying but if you have a smaller tactical flashlights at 2000 lumens the strobe will literally blind them Now you can shoot with this not how he showed but putting the flashlight close to the gun almost where you’re 2nd hands would be. I go to the range I’m a little less accurate But way better then just 1 hand like he showed you & the strobe is there to blind the intruder So he can’t see you if he shoots I want a flashlight to see the intruder but if he has a gun & sees you it can be a shoot out If you have a small tactical hold next to the gun (not like he showed) it gives you an advantage becuse you can still see him ‘ he’s blinded & disoriented He would just be shooting to shoot ‘ get lucky sometimes it could even deter someone ‘ they just takeoff Just my observation A really good tactical light 2000+ lumens your looking 100$ way stronger then what he showed

Brown targets? I know what you meant, and it's hard to get switched off.

The targets are...brown. It's as simple as that -__-

Nineteen Eighty-Four Even though he wasn’t saying that at all. With that logic you are basically saying its ok to shoot a white guy who is attacking you, but a Mexican, or Black attacker. You libtards are way to obsessed with race.

Pretty smart to use brown targets, train as you're likely to fight.
