*SPOILER* I totally agree with the ending making absolutely no sense. I laughed when they were filling in the pool and saying they can never leave so it never happens to anyone else. But like???? The pool is gone? Why would it ever affect anyone else. Also I was laughing because how SUSPICIOUS it must have looked that their father suddenly vanishes and they next day they're filling in a pool... If I was police I'd be like did you guys kill him?!
@mickdipiano8768
@mickdipiano8768 8 ай бұрын
Pretty easy to unfilled a pool. Plus it wasn't the pool that was haunted it was the water from the spring. The spring is their regardless of what's on top of it.
@JGrobby
@JGrobby 8 ай бұрын
@@mickdipiano8768That's what doesn't really make sense, or wasn't necessarily clarified. If it's the spring, then surely all the homes on that block are cursed regardless. What specifically makes that backyard pool the most dangerous entity if the tap water in the area is also cursed.
@touheed6140
@touheed6140 8 ай бұрын
My understanding is that the pool isn't the only output for that water. by the end of the movie we saw it enter the tap water of that house. In Mrs. summers house too the fountain had the entity bec they had taken some from the pool/house water before leaving to keep her wish fulfilled (this relationship between the water and the possessed individual was explored by the Waller family too). Also once the water has been given its sacrifice by one family, it doesn't bother that family again. That's why possessed Mrs. Summers says something like "you'll leave the house we'll get it from them" when she was taunting the mom

Not a horror film, but I am telling everyone about Poor Things. Technically, it could be considered a stretch on Frankenstein. Emma Stone is GLORIOUS and will win the Oscar for this part. I think this could have been an interesting concept. We see how much the Dad is struggling with his disease, and then the pool spirit tells him if he sacrifices one member of the family to it he can get his health back. And at first he says "hell no" of course, but he keeps getting worse and the pool keeps showing him visions of the perfect, healthy life as a famous baseball player he could have and we follow him struggling with deciding if he wants to go through with it, and if so, who he would choose to sacrifice for himself. That would be way more intestesting than "whoopsie, I didnt realize I made a deal to sacrifice my son and now I'm possessed."

oh I 100% agree with you that all of the horror movie output SHOULD be good but like 75% feels like throw away trash. Like at least in the older days when movie were cheap cash grabs they looked decent thanks to sets/practical effects/costume design/cinematography. Now we have like none of that and very weak scripts that could MAYBE be short films if they cut out a lot of fluff. I've seen so many recent horror movies that are like 80% melodrama and 20% horror to the point it feels like the horror was added in just to get sales/attention. Like I *want* to like more modern horror but I have much better luck with older stuff

It could have been made first and just sat on the shelf till now because they knew it was bad. Wouldn't be the first time a terrible movie was released because someone in it started to make a name for themselves. It happens all the time. One of the most infamous of TCM: Next Generation which started both Matter McConaughey and Renne Zelwegger. Both of which tried to get the movie buried and we're almost successful, but once they got more famous the movie was released. It happens ALL the time with low budget, first time filmmakers and actors.

Did anybody really expect “Night Swim” to be good? Let alone with a concept this unbelievable or tricky to pull off? In practice, it’s made even worse partially because the film can’t pick a tone and stick with it (whether to be drastically dire or absurdly silly) and mostly because the premise is way too restrictive and the film has to break itself into pieces to condense it for a full 98 minutes. There are only so many times you can disguise how little something happens while you wait for the disconcerting smoke and mirrors drop. Going for the jugular and providing an unhinged, bonkers experience was probably the better move here, especially since it never does effectively exploit those primal fears around water. And yeah, those jumpscares were garbage. The rest of the elements at play here barely matter. Cinematography is on the drab side, editing is clunky, special effects are embarrassing when you notice them, the pacing drags the otherwise acceptable runtime out to an obscene length and none of the characters stand out. Acting wise, the kids do the best with what they’re given but everyone else might as well be sleepwalking.

I was super interested because 1. I have thalassophobia and was scared of pools as a kid, 2) Kerry Condon is in it, and she's very good, 3) the concept is hard to do and interesting so I thought it might have some imagination

Love your analysis! Regarding the baseball plot (huge baseball fan so loved that element) this is Wyatt Russell’s second film where he’s a baseball player (the Linklater comedy Everybody Wants Some! was the other) so I’m guessing that Wyatt Russell may have some early baseball experience pre-acting. I wonder if the baseball focus was added into Night Swim because he could pull off those scenes? Glad you’re feeling better!! ❤

Blumhouse movies feeling like a cash grab is nothing new to me. They've been making the same safe, generic PG-13 movies that are cheap and appeal to dumb teens who want to see nothing but pointless jumpscares, for at least 10 years, now. It doesnt matter what the quality of the film is to them. There's no artistry. It's just another product on the conveyer belt. Im surprised people are just now realizing it.

I watched Fish Jelly's review and they absolutely called out how this movie was such a wasted opportunity. An evil wishing well that demands human sacrifice? The writers could have leaned into that premise so hard. The family could have gone all in. Invite over a school bully, a rival, a nasty coworker, an entire neighborhood pool party fakeout 😈 of will they won't they. This one needs a do over.

I gave it 3/5 stars because I had a lot of fun laughing at it and making jokes with my friend. I honestly don't know how I would have felt watching this alone.... probably bored af. A pretty bad start for horror in 2024 4/10 movie. I think the movie was at its best when it had drowning sequences with kids bc it did bring back flashbacks when I almost drowned in a pool as a kid but it’s not an offensive horror movie for me but I don’t think I would watch it again. *Idea for the background:* Would be cool if you had a green screen the size of a movie poster where the Saw poster is…and you green screen in the poster of the movie you are reviewing on it.

I think you were too nice honestly 😂it was just a no for me, tried my best to like it and the only good thing about this movie is the high budget quality

spoiler/theory i think because the dad sacrificed himself, the possessed water wouldn’t try to come for the family again, but if a new family moved in without knowing, they would be possessed from the water in the house. my theory is that the water that goes to the whole house was possessed not just the pool ? i only assume this bc the dad was acting all possessed when he was taking a shower.

Great review! Definitely won't be checking this one out. Anyways, I just wanted to thank you for recommending Triangle (2009)! I watched the film a couple days ago and really enjoyed it!

Blumhouse has done some of my favourites: Get Out, Run, Soft and Quiet, Creep... but also some of the worst; the main problem with them is inconsistency

It's disappointing that the movie is so bad, I really enjoyed the short film.

The short film had a simple premise and worked well in that context. Anytime you try to expand a simple concept into a feature length film you run the risk of stretching it too thin until it loses all intrigue. Lights Out, which also was based on a short film, had that same problem for me.
