People's boundaries are so funny because that movie did not disturb me that much. Like yeah the "deep web footage" feel of it brought back some weird nostalgia and yeah disturbing but at the same time by the time I was done with it I was literally chill. By the way saying this not to say that I think people getting disturbed is funny or anything, I just think it's interesting how some things are disturbing or not depending on the person.

This made me realize that a lot of horror movies I’ve enjoyed are not disturbing, or maybe not even horror. The only movie I’ve seen below the iceberg is hereditary, and I was able to handle that one because it only had one really disturbing moment. I found hostel far more disturbing than that because rather than one (truly) shocking moment, it was a whole movie of depraved people. Seeing the original Reddit list and 100 days of sodom being towards the top, there’s no way in hell I’m watching anything on that list!

I remember watching those movies as an exercise in “how far can I push myself” and “how much can I take”. I was no longer watching to see a film with a plot. I like your list a lot more. Also, I recall having to torrent most of those films because of how many of them are banned in places so that should’ve told me that I should quit long before I got to Slaughtered Vomit Dolls.

I really like that you did this. The funny thing about the OG disturbing/horror movie iceberg or other peoples similar ones, is that the farther down you go, the worse the movies get. I don’t mean worse as in violence and disturbing stuff, I just mean the movies get more bad and unwatchable. A lot of them are laughably bad. Also the further down you go the more pornographic they get and I feel like some people are just watching them for that, which is weird, because the internet exists and there are better ways to see that stuff without mixing disturbing violence(unless that’s your thing). It’s also just the quality of film is worse with smaller budget and little to no story. I love an indie film but these just aren’t it. I guess, like you said at the beginning, lets cut out the crap and make an actual “watchable” iceberg. Where the movies are at least decent and not embarrassingly bad.

There was something about the movie Apostle that affected me so badly and I honestly can’t say why. I agree about The Collector as it’s one of the few movies that genuinely scared me as having agoraphobia, that movie is my worst nightmare

For me the Poughkeepsie tape’s definitely got to me as someone who can watch horror and forget about it after (and not have nightmares) this one I couldn’t forget. It really hit me that this is something that can and does happen and it really bothered me for a long while plus the actress who play Cheryl just played her character so well and I feel like that’s what really helped it be so disturbing to me

Thank you for creating an iceberg with actual horror movies. I would never watch anything below tier 3 from the original "horror" iceberg, not in my life. I also like how you pointed out that everyone finds different things disturbing and has different limits. Personally, I can't watch gory/body-horror movies or many movies depicting torture, I don't like them. So Saw or Hostel would be way down there. Strangely enough, though, I'd swap Funny Games and Hereditary. Funny Games just made me emphasize with the family members much more, thus ended up making me feel much more disturbed. The other movie I'd add to the lower tiers would be The Ring and Salo. That one scene in Salo almost made me throw up, not going into detail. And those last ten minutes were unwatchable for me, I literally had to turn away from the screen. However, interestingly enough I could also see the artistic aim and message behind Salo and I did read behind-the-scenes info about how much fun the actors had while filming. So that made Salo very disturbing and a hard watch but... a movie worthy of being called one.

I appreciate this cause like you said the original/most popular Horror Iceberg aren’t really horror movies it’s just real life stuff that can’t be watched unless you have a physical copy or go on the dark web especially the end the last tier on the origin iceberg literally contains all “movies” that can only be watched on the dark web and I seen a video talking about that iceberg and the guy even said he couldn’t even describe or even look up those movies cause even just trying to look up information on them is risky and obviously he wasn’t gonna risk looki them up, some he was able to vaguely talk about from what people have told him but almost all of the “movies” he talked about in the last tier he couldn’t really say much cause of they are literally real life killings basically actual illegal found footage, when I think of a Horror movie iceberg this is what I’m thinking of not what the original one was

100% agree about Snowtown. I’ve seen A Lot of movies, and rewatched A Lot of movies, but I will never watch that again. The strangulation torture scene is way to real, cruel, and disturbing. Every time you talk about movies you won’t watch again, this is the only one that comes to mind.

I love Martyrs so much it's probably in my top 3 films of all time but I cannot watch the last 30 minutes every time I rewatch it, I just can't stomach it. I think it's an excellent film and the psychological aspect was powerful and the relationship between Anna and Lucie was so real. but the torture at the end just I just can't rewatch

Leaving a like already after your presentation of the ice berg. I've never seen the point in including movies from the darkweb, actual snuff films and filmed torture when discussing actual movies. I mean, stick to films that are commercially released in some way.

I think it's interesting since it seems I'm just way less affected by psychological horror than I am literal body horror. Tusk scarred me forever in a GREAT way while I find Hereditary to be forgettable. Martyrs certainly scarred me for life too, I think about how much it disturbed me in a lasting way more so than Serbian Film or Megan is Missing. Extreme body mutilation while also not killing the person is the most vile stuff that gets to me, it's like the idea of taking away someone's humanity by physically incapacitating them beyond recognition is my biggest nightmare fuel

My brothers and I were very sheltered growing up. We were raised to dismiss R rated movies as trash. Of course, that just made us want to see them. Their popularity with other kids increased that effect. After rarely viewing some movies at friends' houses and later after moving out, I felt a sense of satisfaction for having worked around the old parental restrictions and for making my own decisions for myself. I felt like a grownup. But I also noticed that a lot of so-called horror failed with me because it was low-budget and the effects sucked, or because they couldn't maintain the feeling of dread so they just resorted to lame humor or boob shots instead. (Of course, I like comedy and boobs as much as the next guy, but those are not why I decide to watch a horror movie.) I felt cheated, like they had settled for something less than what they had promised. There was definitely a level of disturbingness missing. And I think just like with us basically being deprived of horror movies as kids, being denied horror filmmakers' best efforts and results made me want them all the more. It made me want to push my boundaries and check out really disturbing stuff. So for a time, I did something about it. I researched disturbing horror movies, tracked some down, and watched. It felt good to see and know that there are people who care enough to follow through and not hold back, and not substitute something else instead. It felt like a meeting of the minds with people I will never actually meet. A meeting of our tastes and values. A validation. But as I continued, it didn't really take that many disturbing movies for me to reach my limit and tap out. I wanted disturbing movies. Yet what I was finding all too often were just disturbing scenes loosely strung together. Plot was a distant after-thought. It was pron of a different color. It left me dissatisfied, and sour on the whole thing. Years later, I worked up the courage to try a few YT summary-reviews of disturbing movies again, just to see what I was missing out on. Maybe somebody could be scary AND tell a well-crafted story? What I found was that the state of the art of disturbing horror films had progressed beyond me. People can make movies about literally anything now. Nothing is off limits. It can all be made these days--if the filmmaker is willing to put up with bans and censors and highly limited distribution. And a lot of those movies failed to click with me. They didn't make me feep like I had had a meeting of the minds. They felt like I was watching the work product of a strange, alien, vile, deranged person. That was not validation. That was a movie maker basically marginalizing me as too vanilla and normal. And that’s...OK. I'm cool with it. I have reached my limit, and I don't need to explore any further or deeper. I don't need the thrill. I don't feel any grand epiphany anymore. It’s just a bunch of weirdos pushing the limits of what they can make and get away with. It's a primeval, visceral rebellion against law and order, rules and structure, just for rebellion's sake. But I don't need any of that anymore. I like structure. I like consistency. I don't need to be scared. I'll take normal. In fact, make it a double.
