3:46 The plane used by the Witches was a Po-2, a crop-duster turned bomber as the need arose during WW2. Even in 1929, the plane was quickly considered outdated, due to its relatively underpowered engine (which, didn't really matter for crop dusting) and even more so in 1939-onwards where we saw the plane become more and more prevalent in the battlefield. However this underpowered engine, and the fact that the Po-2 was a biplane, allowed it to have a really good gliding ability. Moments before reaching their target, in pitch black darkness, the Witches would idle their engines to reduce the audible noise of their planes, while flying at tree level, and glided with ease to their unsuspecting targets. The Po-2 had a really low stalling speed and it was a perfect fit for this silent night bomber role. (It is also the *ONLY* biplane to be credited with shooting down a Jet; An F-94 Lockheed Starfire was lost by trying to reduce its airspeed to intercept a Po-2 and stalled out.) Also, it should be noted that the pilots were not issued parachutes until 1944, due to how low the Witches would fly, resulting in a very high death rate once they'd been shot down. 7:12 I am not aware of a documented story where a Witch would have shot at a plane with her pistol, however, it is not unlikely, as they were only issued pistols for self defense and the Po-2 had no offensive armament, only a single 7.62 mm ShKAS machine gun, behind the pilot, which was controlled by a gunner. There is a story about American pilot Owen J. Baggett who is claimed to have shot down a Japanese Ki-43 fighter, with only his M1911 sidearm pistol, however, this story is disputed and contradicted by Japanese wartime records, so do take it with a grain of salt.

You're right. They cut their engines to glide the planes in as quietly as possible in an event to avoid protection. Especially because the Po-2, which is the Biplane that they flew was already heavily outdated and slow for WW2 standards, that's why they took to Nightbombing and tried their best to go undetected.

Two of my favorites, that have a real impact to me for at least American WW2 history, is Screaming Eagles (the battle of the 101st airborne to hold Bastogne without any reinforcements) and No Bullets Fly (The story or Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler). The latter is one that really shows that who you face as a soldier isn't just a monster, but another human being.

The engine thing was a tactic they implemented: no engine means almost no sound, which significantly boosts stealth. However, this was a high risk move: failure to start it back would mean 100% crash. Some stories talk about engines being started only a few meters above earth. This method also created a (likely untrue) story about their name: the only sound that could warn you about the Night Witches was a quiet "Swooosh" of the plane itself, kinda like a witch on a broomstick. Cute, but most likely false. Also, yes, their planes had no dogfight capability, so they were given handguns. While I know nothing about anyone actually using them (let's be realistic, you are NOT winning a fight against a plane with a handgun), I don't think it's difficult to imagine someone firing them as a desperation move. Reason for both of those tactics is the fact that they were given the worst crop planes, very much outperformed by anything. Enemy bullets could set their wings on fire; they only had stars, compass, and maps for navigation; bombs could jam and someone would have to go and physically push them. The fact that they were this efficient with such horrible equipment is what brought them their fame, and 588th regiment being the only all-female by the end of the war out of 3 all-female regiments established just added to the level of insanity. Edit: addition about handguns and planes
@justmerc1642

The planes' low top speed was an added bonus, since it was lower than the stall speed of the German planes. A pursuing German interceptor would have a hard time matching the Night Witch's maneuvers or would potentially overshoot.

To give the short story. When the night witches were originally formed they were laughed at. They were given uniforms that didnt fit and old planes that were considered to loud and slow to be effective. Led by Yevdokiya Bershanskaya who turned the old plane's disadvantages into advantages. Their slower speed meant they could make tighter turns then the other planes used at the time. Their light build meant that idling the engine meant they could glide in noiselessly. Their design made it incredibly difficult for the unsophisticated radar of the time to pick up on them. They would sleep during the day and fly out at night often making multiple runs. Keep in mind that these were all very young volunteers late teens to early twenties. Many of their pilots flew over 800 missions before the wars end. But due to their slow speed were denied the chance to fly with the rest at the end of the war. Fun fact: The nazis hated them so fucking much that it was automatic to give the Iron Cross to any german who brought one down. My g-g-gran was a night witch and she still has her plane. Picture a female crazy russian yoda and you arent far off. Older then dirt but shes still alive.

They were Soviet women pilots (volunteers) that flew with very small wooden planes. The whooshing sound the wooden plane made just before they got bombarded was the reason they were named night witches, like a witches wooden broomstick. It was also the only sound as they shut their engines down for the reason you noticed. The planes were so small each one carried only 2 women and 2 bombs, so they can't be found by a radar and didn't use radios to not be able to be found by radio locators. One of them did 1008 missions.

The Nightwitches have been a band of russian women pilots. Women were allowed to fight in the red army but due to pretty bad engines they had to use planes that have formerly been used for agricultural and civilian purpose. Their engines are very loud so they used the night and just flew up high and then turned their engines off and dropped on their enemies. The german soldiers called then "Nachthexen" which translates to Nightwitches because everything was silent and they just came out of the darkness. The second problem those women had was the very low capacity of bombs they could carry so after every bombing they had to hope their engines would start again and then turn around reload and fly back as shown in the Video.

Yup, they would turn off the engines so they couldn't be heard as easily; apparently the name "Night Witches" was given to them because all the Germans could hear was the wind on their wings, which wasn't much. They also weren't given parachutes because, flying so low, they were dead if they got shot down.

So, I’m a lot late. But the history of the ‘Night Witches’ The Soviet Air Force had several regiments. A female Major in the USSR used her contacts to get Stalin to approve the formation of three all-female regiments. Among these regiments was the 388th. These women were given basically sub par everything (even the food, I mean, it is Communist Russia after all). Ill-fitting uniforms originally meant for men that they had to pack with rags (for the boots) and make additional belt holes so that they could make the pants fit which were exceptionally baggy. That’s not *THE* highlight though. The planes they were given was little more than crop dusters. No mounted weapons means that they were a sitting duck if they got into a dogfight, though the 388th knew there were inherent advantages, most notably a lower stall speed than fighter planes. So, the 388th decided to strap these crop dusters up with droppable munitions, go out on night missions, and kill the engines as they closed in on their target area. They would glide in, drop their payload, and (in a perfect world) glide back to a safe distance where they can reignite their engine and fly back to re-up and re-arm. These bombing runs were so effective, that the Germans called them “Nachthexen” or “Night Witches” because the gliding sounds of the planes sounded like a witch’s broomstick flying across the sky at the witching hour.

I dont know if this was universally accurate, but I remember hearing that pilots in ww2 were basically issued a pistol with enough ammo to off yourself if your plane ignited or downed, so you didnt suffer or get captured. Not sure how accurate that is, but I definitely remember learning that a few years ago. Either way, that would be bad af of the pilot to blast off at the enemy pilot lmao. Thats some willpower.
