I grew up In Harlem, literally seen ppl get killed, had shit stolen, guns pulled on me had to walk around with a weapon. Beat the shit outta ppl, gotten my ass beat. It’s so surreal to me now to go back to my hood and realize how dangerous it is. I also realize how little i had to live for and nothing to lose. If I catch a case now, my job will know within 24hours and I’ll lose everything. Thank god I made it out.

Man, my first job out of college was a Walgreens assistant manager in the hood. My store location on my night shift got held up at gunpoint by two dudes. They came in the office where I was counting end of night money and checking out my cashiers. I told them that money ain't mine so you take you gotta take 😂 Everybody lived and they got their money. Shit was crazy!

As a former hoodlum.. the hood is weak. I see it now. Yea it take a certain toughness to live there but it take a certain weakness to not leave … read that again… the hood is comfortable. Drinking smoking sex low work ethic outside of those 3 things and that’s most hood “Men”. Sad reality. Most of the “tough” guys are just emotional kids that never grew out of their feelings/trauma… now that I’m rehabilitating I can see clearly how I was living and how many of live today

Decisions made in the past by my great-grandparents, grandparents and parents, put me in a position where I didn't live and grow up in the hood or sketchy areas. Yep, I was a middle-class kid. Not embarassed at all about it. If growing up and living grimy is a badge of honor for people, hats off to them. People before me made choices that weren't good for them at that moment, to make life for themselves better later, and to improve the lives of their future offspring. I agree with Gil, I'm not trying to keep anything real for clout lol.

I started life off in a rough neighborhood then my parents got money and moved us to the suburbs before I really knew what the difference was as far as "the hood" and "middle class." I was just happy to be in a house with my own room. But kids made it seem like I wasn't "tough" just because of where I ended up living. Like, I don't have to prove to anyone how tough I am because my *PARENTS* worked hard. If anything, they taught me that if in fact I do work hard, I can have nice things in this world and not be limited to my surroundings. But if folks wanna have that "I'm gonna always be from the 'hood" mentality to never leave it, more power to them. I was basically Esquire from "ATL"

I remember in 1995 being 16 smoking chocolate thai in Brooklyn, visited NYC for the first time. I thought I was so cool hanging out in Biggie’s hometown. I stuck out, little bald Asian guy with timbs on lol. I had this fake gold ring which I took off right away. This black dude was competing against me trying to roll a blunt. We went to queens also, love the diversity. Spanish mamis are so hot in the summer time. 🔥

It was good and it smelled actually like chocolate 😂. The baggie had a Hershey kiss on it also. Long live 90’s hip hop.

These days, they run up on you with force, and you don't even have to be in the hood; they will even follow you home if they spot you.

If you get out to improve yourself, stay out. You can help from afar. Don't get hit by a stray bullet, or a drive bye.😢 Help your family to get out if you can.

I tell my children all the time there is nothing cool about being in the hood or celebrating foolishness. I will never go visit or stop in an environment where some people live like this. To each his own, but my children better not ever go anywhere near an environment like this. Gil got the right idea!
