@Rachel McGivern The meaning of the song is kinda cool... there are different variations and interpretations, but the main theme is that a long time ago, at Scarborough, an Elf King fell in love with a mortal woman. When she didn't love him back, he cursed her, and she could only break it if she did the impossible tasks mentioned in the song (the shirt without seam, finding an acre of land, etc.) The way the story ends vary too, but one version is that she beats the curse, and gets to be with her true love. It's a really awesome story. :3

Reverse the rolls and change the story a bit and it's the love story where an elf woman falls in love with a mortal man in Lord of the rings (I can't remember their names it's been so long since I watched Lord of the rings)

This, like many covers of this song, 1) fails to tell the whole story by 2) leaving out the most important part. The song is supposed to be a duet, and after the man is finished asking the woman to do impossible tasks (make a shirt with no seams, then wash it in a dry well, then hang it to dry on a thorn), she comes in and sings: "Now he has asked me questions three, Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme; I hope he'll answer as many for me, Before he shall be a true lover of mine." Then SHE asks HIM to do impossible tasks (buy her an acre of land between the saltwater and the sea sand, plow it with a ram's horn and seed it all over with one pepper corn, sheer it with a sickle of leather and tie it all up with one peacock's feather, thrash it on a wall and never let one corn of it fall), before he gets his shirt: "When he has done and finished his work. Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme: Oh, tell him to come and he'll have his shirt, And he shall be a true lover of mine." Basically this song is the ultimate "we are never ever ever getting back together".

Last I checked, the original version by simon and garfunkel didnt have those extra parts that the girl sings (although it does have some cryptic background parts I can't figure out the meaning to, something about a child of the mountain being unaware of a war being fought for a forgotten cause), but you are right that this doesnt have all of the original verses in it Edit: it was explained to me that the simon and garfunkel was not the original.

@@davidgabbitas2880 Hate to break it to ya buddy but Simon and Garfunkel didn't write this song, they covered it. It's a folk song dating back to at least 1650. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarborough_Fair_(ballad)) Oh, and the cryptic background parts in Simon and Garfunkel's Scarborough Fair recording are from Paul Simon's previous song, "The Side of a Hill".

Sort of wants to sound like a funeral song with a some flexible interpretation of the lyrics. Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme are herbs that do grow in the wild, not just in one's garden. They also appear as a line in each of the four stanzas of the song as a sort of refrain. I think that the "cambric shirt" of the second stanza can specify material of construction and/or a style. If we ignore material and take the style of the shirt interpretation, this leaves the refrain (parsley, sage, etc) to fill in the material. A lightweight shirt woven without seam or needlework made from those flowers. This then works with the third stanza. The acre of land could traditionally refer to a homestead for a newly married couple, but using the funeral interpretation it instead refers to a soon to be grave in the woods marked by the flowering herbs. This leaves the first and fourth stanzas. On the surface it sounds like she's talking about a man at a fair. Alas, I know not of any Scarborough Fair, but I do greatly enjoy the study of Celtic Animism. Very loosely interpreted: that the natural world around us is alive with spirits and aspects of the Divine. That humans could interact with in sometimes very emotional ways. I would consider the refrain again to be referencing something very wild and very natural rather than anything made by people. So without any clarification from Scarborough Fair itself, it almost sounds like a goodbye song being sung by someone who's expecting to die and return to the natural forces of the world. ("Was once a true love of mine"; when we die, we return to that from which we came.)
@tamceline239

Scarborough Fair? According to your guesses, could the "fair" mean a funeral of someone's, and the funeral is attended by many people? Just a random guess.

Damn.. No wonder I always had chills listening to this song
@Drakeero
@Drakeero 10 жыл бұрын
Tam Celine Well, I ended up looking up the original meaning. It's disappointing. It's another "fair-folk" causing trouble by cursing a woman to never find true love unless the guy could perform the impossible tasks sung of in the stanzas. In the end I prefer my interpretation: the fair is an important local tradition, a time of happiness. But for whatever reason the singer is ill and cannot go to the fair with others because she'll be dead soon. Following the concept of animism where many aspects of nature were viewed as having incorporeal yet intelligent aspects (thus the 'true love' might be an embodiment of the natural powers of a particular place) - the symbolism of the 'impossible tasks' could instead reference her dying wish to be buried in an unmarked grave at that aforementioned place. As sad as it would be to die during a festive holiday, it would also imply great peace and acceptance and... well its just nicer than most fears of death. OR - if you want to add the randomly chosen picture for flavor to my interpretation (and assuming the singer is the 'girl' on the right, and the person on the left is a 'guy'): Instead of drawing from celtic animism to explain the "he" as a force of the world (since that idea may seem a bit strange to those who do not regularly ponder such concepts), the "he" in this case could be her friend. The fellow soldier/adventurer whom was slain at an earlier time and buried in the woods. In death, it could be said that the same nature symbolism of the plants could be used to reference where his grave is, and where she wants to be buried when she dies.
