Lyrics: I am a poor wayfaring stranger While traveling through this world of woe Yet there’s no sickness, toil or danger In that bright world to which I go I’m going there to see my father I’m going there no more to roam I’m only going over Jordan I’m only going over home I know dark clouds will gather ’round me I know my way is rough and steep Yet beauteous fields lie just before me Where God’s redeemed their vigils keep I’m going there to see my mother She said she’d meet me when I come I’m only going over Jordan I’m only going over home

1940, a war of unforgettable hell and death is raging. A small french battalion, no more than 400 men, walking through a village, off to unknown frontlines to stop a nation of broken hearts from invading. Marching, they would begin to pass a young girl, no more then 12, having dark brown hair, wearing a white poofy dress, holding a small french flag, screaming "S'il te plait va nous protéger et rentre à la maison!" (please go protect us and come home!) She would run with the battalion, cheering them on to a point where the commander would halt his troops for rest and further planning. During this, he would look back to her and eventually motioning her to come forward. Following, she would come to the front, saluting soldiers on the way, praising them to "s'il te plaît, ne laisse pas l'histoire se répéter" (please don't let history repeat.) When arriving to the commander, he would kneel down, following at a moments notice, she would hug him and cry to him, "tu dois y aller ?" (must you go?). He'd look at her, spare his tears, and hug her once more. Following, he would stand up and order his troops to continue on. Passing her now, at this point on the ground crying. The soliders would begin to hymn and sing quietly while passing, knowing that the hell they were approaching would change the world forever. This occurrence would be the last time Lieutenant Colonel Louis De Cáuitrie, whom would descend to the gates above, would go remembering Marie, the girl who would forever cry remembering what her brother did, for not only her, but for his country.

Imagine being in the great war. You know you won't live. Victory is meaningless. The ONLY comfort some people could find is in heaven. Not victory or survival. Because these brave soldiers will not last long enough to see either. The great war is so forgotten, so overshadowed by it's successor, we forget the absolute hell that was the life of a soldier in the great war. This song is the only peace in the hell that was their lives. It's soothing, and reminds you of the bigger picture. Let's the soldiers know there will be an end to this violence, when they cross over to the afterlife. Holy frick is this song bitter-sweet.
@ordenmanvrn76852 жыл бұрын
@@Pineapple-co6fe I am sure many people did not have such thoughts. After all, this was seen by many people and showed by propaganda as being "the last war", and that eternal peace would come thereafter. Many soldiers accepted to die in order to secure peace for their famillies & future generations. In fact, the lack of will to fight in British & French units & civilian pacifism during WW2 could in part be attributed to this very propaganda.
@Pineapple-co6fe2 жыл бұрын
@@ordenmanvrn7685 That was a very large propaganda campaign that was very successful and many probably believed it when they enlisted, however by the end of the war I imagine many abandoned that foolish idea. I mean, this song was popular for a reason.

Daniels peered over the shield of his mounted machine gun, sitting atop his squad's APC as it rolled with the rest of the convoy into Los Angeles. It had been a gruesome slew of battle after battle, skirmish after skirmish, and death after death for the six months leading up to this moment, but he, and what was left of his squad, had made it here at last. As Daniels gazed at the scenery that greeted him, his thoughts and memories began coursing through his mind. He had witnessed half of his platoon, along with four of his squad members, vanish into nothingness after an airburst warhead hit the building they were stationed in. He had witnessed an enemy sniper, peering out of a window for a split second, to take a shot not at him nor his fellow fighters, but at a young girl desperately trying to flee the carnage behind him. He had witnessed the same kind of inhumanity and cruelty that was ingrained into the conscience of his grandfather, a WW2 veteran, as he walked through the concentration camps in Germany. Yet having witnessing all of that, he still firmly believed in his convictions, for after this ugly civil war is over, his nation will truly be at peace, and that shining city atop the hill will finally return. That is, until now. As he peered over his gunshield, he saw what he could only describe as a long decayed husk of his final victory. There was barely any building left standing, in what was once known as 'The City of Angels', and what little reminder of a city there was were bathed in fire. The streets, the ruins of the skyscrapers, and the hills that surrounded the city, were charred a reddish black, a product of the year long struggle between various factions within the city, the same kind found across much of America in the last fifteen months of upheaval, as well as a three-month-long siege. The sky was a dull gray, dark clouds gathering overhead as if about to extinguish the fires that raged across the city. Had it not been for the fortifications dug outside the city, and the weary soldiers that greeted his convoy, Daniels would have thought that he was entering a ghost town. In his mind, a feeling he had not felt since the beginning of the war flickered. As the convoy marched further into the city center, headed for the local revolutionary headquarters, the sights meeting Daniels' eyes only filled him with a slow-burning sense of grief for the calamity that had befallen this city. Jet-black wreckages of cars, armored vehicles and helicopters littered the streets, rooftops and ruins, as fires consumed what was left of the city buildings and parks. Whatever patches of concrete not occupied by wreckages or flaming debris were packed with tents of various sizes, and whatever structure that seemed like it would not collapse immediately were converted into barracks, armories and field hospitals. Here and there, he would spot parking lots filled to the brim with body bags, while those more unfortunate would simply be left out to be consumed by scavengers and fire. The soldiers marching about on the streets seemed only slightly less harrowed than their fallen comrades. Then, suddenly, Daniels glimsped at a scene that would be burned into his memory for the rest of his life. Around a street corner, upon a lampost, perched a few crows, one of which was resting atop a rope. Tied to the other end of that rope was a man, in uniform, with the words 'traitor to the Republic' written by blood across his chest. Behind him, two more men had been hung in the same manner. It was at this moment that, for the first time since enlisting in the Chicago Division, Daniels felt... doubt. The convoy quickly passed the corner, but that scene, and the feeling it provoked within him, lingered. Moments later, thoughts began racing through his mind, accumulating into a single, damning question. "What... was this all for?"

It had been many years since the war had broke out in Europe, you had lost many good friends, their bodies scattered about the countryside of each country you've fought in. You recieve word, the war is over, it's finally over. While walking the countryside, you stop to admire the beauty that once had been shattered by smoke and flame, the lush green overtaking the charred black. A soldier walks up behind you, he used to be your enemy, but, he has no hatred towards you, no, he stands next to you, offers you a cigarette, and admires the view with you. You start talking, have a few laughs, then realize something, this man you were fighting was just like you, he had a family back home, he had friends that perished as well, as a sign of homage and respect, you take off your helmet and place it at your feet, saluting him, but not just him, his courage and bravery, his friends, his commitment to a bitter conflict. He salutes back, tears streaking down his face, he then hugs you, thanking you. You feel at peace knowing this part chapter of your life has ended, and a new one has begun, hopefully, one with more prosperity and happiness, with many new friends and memories to be made.

So true man. From America, I respect anyone fighting for a better world. I know Russia and America hasn't been exactly the best of friends. But I hope we can all figure this out. I see people in America everyday, scared of Russia. I ask them why and I usually get some sort of "AhH cOmMie CoUnTrY hAcKeD oUr ElEctIOn." The world is on the verge of figuring out true peace. We are so close. Yet some people are still so afraid of different cultures. Some take that fear to extreme levels. That's why U.S. troops still loose their lives in the middle east. Some people there fear the "infidelity" of America and targeted the innocent. We need more acceptance in this world. It seems like everyone wants the world to work their way instead of leading their own live the way that work for the and letting others choose their own path. Even as an American, I'd love to visit Russia. I find the culture and history of Russia beautiful and inspiring. I hope one day, all countries can live in peace and soldiers aren't needed.
