Looks like a handful. I learnt to fly on a 1992 Shuttle ZX in my backyard at age 14...with a Futaba 154 gyro though. I washed a lot of cars and mowed a lota lawns to buy that chopper. 🙂🇦🇺

Awesome video & thankya for sharing with us! I bought the Hirobo Shuttle with the O.S. .028 engine on my 1st overseas deployment in the Navy back in 1988! 6 hours on it all together just trying to learn how to hover & never did master it as there was always to much tail rotor thrust in one direction or not enough in the other & was hard to try to adjust & trim out! Later after our deployment in Operation Desert Shield/ Storm, I bought the Hirobo Shuttle ZX. i had to assemble the whole entire helo together with the exception of the swashplate assembly. Bought an O.S. .032 pullstart engine for it but never could get it to run or start up on my block test stand! 32 years later i still have both helos & the ZX is still in prestine condition as if it was brand spanking new right out of the box, zero flight time or hover training, & it sits on top of my computer shelf in my living room!

Thankya for your service and a salute to ya as well. My uncle also served aboard the USS MIDWAY. He was part of the Vietnam evacuation where they pushed alot of helos overboard into the drink to make way for the incoming helos loaded up with the evacuees! I would love to learn to fly both helos from a master & legend such as yourself, but I'm probly no where close to where you are. . . .wherever that may be! I'm in CO. I just found this video. *I have one of those.* It is currently in my basement along with a bunch of other RC projects. I keep intending to get my old Shuttle flying again. I'm pretty sure I have all the parts. I purchased my Shuttle in 1982 (give or take a year). I'm sure I'll have more to say once I finish watching your video.
@ddegn
@ddegn Жыл бұрын
You mention possible future 3D flying. If I remember correctly the Shuttle doesn't have enough collective throw to fly inverted. When I purchased my Shuttle back in the early '80s, the guy at the hobby store told me the Shuttle needs to be modified in order to fly inverted. The slot in the side of the frame needs to be extended to allow enough collective throw for inverted flight. The day I purchased my Shuttle was a very memorable day. I had never spent that much money in my life prior to purchasing the Shuttle and all the required gear.
@NightFlyyer
@NightFlyyer Жыл бұрын
Right on. Well it is dicey to fly inverted. I use the MAS method. (zero pitch at half throttle). It does a fairly decent inverted flight, but inverted hover is not perfect. I might mess with it, but I like it stock. I have several other shuttle videos, like the ones all destroyed in the fire, and the one like this, that was gifted to me after the fire. My Trex's will do all the 3d stuff, so those are my go to's. Get busy and happy flying. Thanks.

We would turn the gyro off and try to get them up in a hover, as soon as that helicopter would spin and look us in the face, the 1st thing we would do is shut it down. I then went to a Miniature aircraft 60. Also I knew john simone in the early eighties while working at Teledyne Ryan in san diego. Good to see a picture, John hasnt changed a lot, except for the white hair. LOL

Actually I preferred my Concepts to the Shuttle, as I could easily hover them inverted as I show in some of my older vids. The Shuttle head is way too complicated and why I am not doing inverted flights. I just can't get enough reverse pitch to hold it. I visited John a few years ago and I think he is still working at Teledyne, but is also rebuilding Porsche's and VW's for folks. We both worked on the F-16s that I flew and blew in the movie Blue Thunder and he flew the helis. We all have white hair now, probably because of that. LOL. I learned on his American RC Mantis and of course there were no gyros then, so it was a trip, but that is the way it was and at 75, glad I can still do it. Thanks much for the comments and happy flying. BTW I crashed this heli 50 feet up right after this. You may enjoy seeing this too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4LRf6Wph9dlnac

I have an old venture 30 converted to flybarless after my last tailboom strike that was my very first nitro helicopter I'd be very honored if I can send it up to you for a little vacation let you fly it around and do what you want

WOW, that is a very kind offer. It is expensive to send a helicopter like that. Is it flyable, or needing fixed? Parts are hard to find and if I break it, I would feel bad, sending it back to you that way. Tell me more, and thanks so kindly as I would love to fly it.

@@NightFlyyer it's all ready to go just bind to your spectrum remote it's using a micro beast as the fbl unit I'm running a thunder tiger x50 rotor head and tail using a brand new OS 32 engine well relatively new it does have some corks to it but you should be able to manage that no problem (engine setup) the flight controller is all set up the only real thing you have to do is just make sure everything matches I run I think + 12 - 12. Now I drive tractor trailer so it wouldn't be too hard for me to request a load near your area like I said it would be an honor especially if you signed it after you were done with it lol hoping we can meet you at the ircha event in Muncie Indiana me and my wife go to it every year she flies to be awesome to hear back from you again I don't know how to send private messages via KZbin anymore I don't know how we be able to discuss arrangements non publicly

@@a100nick Hi, I don't know how to send PMs either. YT dropped that feature years ago, sadly. If you code your email address in a message, I can read it, then delete it. Few are reading this far into messages anyway, as no one has time for that anymore! LOL As far as bringing it up, that would certainly be a good way. I would rather you bring it up ready to go with your TX and we go fly it. You can show me first. Then you can take it home. Spend the night here in our guest bedroom. I think that would be safe and easier for us. I am not so good at figuring out others settings, and so it seems a trip up would be best, if you can pull that off. Otherwise, best to keep this bird safe.....I'm old, you know and it is always windy. Thanks so much. I appreciate you.

@@NightFlyyer ahh I'm thinking of a book with a white and light blue cover. Yes, Mike was huge in the heli stuff. I think he was first to use separate throttle and pitch control to allow the for negative pitch use?

@@Rusty-Metal He may have been. We were all doing that experimenting at the time. I did my first inverted flights with the American r/c Revolution. It had collective pitch. John Simone made them along with the mantis. We were all friends then and experimenting. Later on I used the very first production helicopter to invent the electric tail rotor motor for Kyosho and then invented the Hyperfly notar for them. Got vids on all that on my channel. Those were fun times. Thanks.

Very interesting video and congratulations for your skills as a pilot. However, by seeing the engine running, I think that there is not much smoke and I am worried about its health! I would suggest, but I may be wrong, to set a little more rich. I think yours is set too lean. Mike from France (excuse me for my bad english.....)
@NightFlyyer
@NightFlyyer 8 ай бұрын
I have been flying helis for over 50 years. I'm 76 now. I never run too lean, cause helis quit in the air that way. Too rich, they don't have enough power. But not a lot of smoke, is because my fuel has no castor in it. At 6:00 in the video, look close. I think it is actually running too rich, as you can see the smoke coming out. It is Torko Racing fuel, at 20% Nitro. It is a very clean burning fuel. Thanks for your concern, but all my OS engines run just fine and are my least troublesome engines.

I flew the first 20 years of my heli flying with no gyro. It's not that hard. First encounter with anything close to a gyro was the Schluter Mini Boy with mechanical mixing. Then I got a radio with adjustable mixing. Started running a gyro in about 2003? I flew Kalt helicopters back in the day. Baron 20's specifically. Love the early birds.

Most of the heli pilots I taught, mostly on American RC Mantis's and Kyosho Concept 30's did not find it easy, as you say, so your an exception. I am flying all my old helicopters, 1 at a time, and at least 1 more time in my live. I'm 77 now, so you never know when you can't. I wrote a product review on the Kalts in Model aviation, back in the 70's. I liked it. It had a wood fuselage. LOL. Thanks.

@@NightFlyyer let me re-phrase... it's easy once you're used to it. The most difficult part is re-trimming leaving a hover and coming out of forward flight. With the transmitters mixing, it was a knob on the upper left of the transmitter. I still have that TX.. I'll have to dig it out and take a pic of it.

@@NightFlyyer it IS a JR, similar to that one. I'll dig it out and take a pic of it. That said, I need to get back to flying. Been a while. Still have choppers. Hanging out in the garage... need batteries, fuel lines, etc. I got caught between the transition away from nicads. Need to figure out what to use now. Just haven't had the time. There's some video of me flying my Blade 450 3D and my Audacity Pantera on my channel if you're interested. I was trimming and adjusting governor on the Pantera, but there's a fair amount of flying. I still use my old XP8103, but it's got a 2.4ghz module in it. In that video, it was still FM.

@@talldrummer1 Right on. I haven't flown my nitro choppers in about 6 years or so, and find I have to clean needle valves and mess with them. Like they say, you have to drive or fly it, or it will deteriorate. I'm flying all my old helis, before I get into my electrics, including My Trex 600, a fave. Today, I just flew and oldie with a Russian engine. The Lite machines tiny nitro engine heli. Anyway, get back to flying and get those machines running. Make some videos. Thanks.
