For anyone who's wondering, the difference between Vaporwave and Synthwave is that Vaporwave is chopped up, screwed, and sampled and is sarcastic cynical take on commercialized elements of the 90s/80s. There are samples of jingles and pop culture clips. While Synthwave is design to emulate classical 80s themes. I love both. (please tell me if explained this incorrectly)

You're right traditionally, though Vaporwave has made it passed its irony stage and has progressed into something more sincere and genuine; even the nostalgia has become genuine. I would say the main difference between each these days is which genres they typically emulate. Though of course there's lots of overlap, Synthwave (hence the name) tends to focus on the synth and burgeoning electronic genres of the time (although these were hardly considered classic until very recent times), and Vaporwave focuses on taking the more or less mass-produced commercial music of the time and remixing it into something to be listened to intentionally, instead of as a by-product of a commercial campaign. Even though it started out as a sort of cynical joke, the act of doing this in the first place eventually ended up bringing about the same genuine nostalgia Synthwave began with and it couldn't be ignored forever that taking music that was rather meaningless and produced as a sheer byproduct and turning it into a genre to be intentionally listened to for the sake of the meaning it ironically invokes... is actually a form of genuine art. We live in interesting times.
@wolftorap3 жыл бұрын
Didn't you take this directly off the front page of Reddit, where It sates the exact thing in the same exact words? Look up Synthwave to see what I mean. I found the exact same thing written from a Reddit comment from 2017, so yeah: Vaporwave is more of a downtempo beat, chopped and screwed and sampled. While Synthwave is designed to emulate classic 80s themes and has an aesthetic of fast cars, faster women, and Miami sunsets, Vaporwave is totally different. It's more of a sarcastic cynical take on commercialized elements of the 90s.

That no matter what, life will continue. When you die, your life will have meant nothing. Merely a speck of dust finally drifting away. Floating through the very world that you endured so much pain in. In this though, there is a calm. A still. Despite the turmoil, the sadness, and philosophy that wracks your brain, it's the fact that you're sitting here, alive. Thinking. Feeling these things. And it soothes you. I dunno. I mean yeah this style definitely smacks of 80s synth but it is also inarguably modern music. You never would've found production quality like this in the 80s. That's why so many albums from the 80s are getting remastered.
@tomwohrely47764 жыл бұрын
@@RobinNewbrough It's a funny thing, isn't it? Though I would say MUCH of this music is modern, not just the production quality. The sheer focus on the synth, many of the melodies, and all of the hip-hop rhythms either didn't exist back then, or weren't relevant. Which is something that kind of annoys me about it tbh. But yet something about it still gives the same 80's "feeling", doesn't it? Seems like more than just emulating a sound, this music reminds us of a time, a feeling, that doesn't seem to be present today. And I don't think this is a uniquely "80's" feeling, though it can be argued it peaked then, but a feeling we had when times were better. And that decade is simply one of the last hallmark decades when we had it.

Everyone says synthwave is both nostalgic and futuristic at the same time. I would say, the genre is aligned with our collective subconscious. At this place in time - 2021 - it resonates with our souls. When something is emanating from the collective part of our psyche, it's often seen as ancient, but also something that is totally new - that belongs to the future. The same thing can be said about love. If you love someone, he or she is the impersonation of some old deity - it goes beyond your intellect. For me, synthwave is something that strolls with confidence. It's sweet and dark, and it is at peace. We need this music now.

I've been a fan of your music forever, and it helps me write so much. I can't write to lyrical music because it distracts me too much, which is why these compilations are perfect. Specifically yours, because there really isn't a better compiler of my music tastes out there. Keep it up, I love what you do. :)

I've been subbed to the channel for quite awhile now... It's been since sometime last year... Anyways, the vibes I get from your mixes are un-explainable man... That 80's vibe like everybody else, those thoughts of space, the future, the stars... That future everybody desires...
