I actually know someone this happened to...she didn't see a personification of her past self, but she did have a highly traumatic memory emerge after the guy who caused it ran into her randomly one day in public. So that aspect is actually accurate.

I wonder if the twist was a lot more compelling in the 1960s. Mental health was still largely ignored or unknown to the general public. The idea of people not always being in control of their own mind was new to cultural zeitgeist. See things like Psycho, or The Bad Seed, where they have to literally have to explain to audience what’s happening because the concept of mental health was seemingly so unknown.

I agree. The concept of blocked memories was new to psychiatry at that time. There was also a lot of skepticism around psychiatry in general. My parents, aunts and uncles were all teenagers and young adults in the 1960s, and they still feel a lot of shame about admitting the need for mental health support.

If I'm not mistaken, "having a crush" in the 60s was more or less a way to say how pretty girls were. It wasn't the same as it is now. It was just nice. Course I could be wrong too and he could just be a creep. It is the Twilight Zone after all

It's one of the more terrifying episodes, if a bit predictable. I am amazed at what this episode got away with like him saying he had a crush on her and the violence. Oddly enough Janice Rule in this episode looks a great deal like Kathleen Quinlan did in Twilight Zone The Movie's "It's a Good Life" where she also played a schoolteacher named Helen Foley (though I guess a different character since there is no indication or reference to thls episode except the name and occupation). The expression “have a crush” might not have had a blatant sexual undertone like now, but it was gaining that usage by 1960, so the character using the expression was supposed to make him creepier. It would not have been creepy in 1960 if, in a romantic comedy, he had said he had a crush on her when she was younger and now they were both adults dating. It was considered fine for a guy to wait for a girl to grow up and then marry her. So he was using a pick-up line out of context, and therefore it is intentionally creepy.

I actually think this episode is underrated! I thought the little girl was amazing. There is a moment when Helen adult sees the same burned mark on Markie’s arm, and Terry’s expression is surprisingly good for a 10-year-old actor! Apart from the movie ‘An Imitation of Life’, I don't recall seeing that young actress again. Indeed, mental illness was not understood the same way we see it today! That is also why a movie like Hitchcock’s Marnie wasn't well-received at the time.

I like that particular episode of The twilight zone -- creepy, is what I'm going for & creepy is what I got, just imagine your younger self coming back telling you about a traumatic (the murder of your mother) memory, so attached, to your very being, that you totally blocked out?🥺😑

Got to say I do like that it showed women arent completely defenceless like most crime shows (or any other shows really that I watched growing up...) and can fight their way out of a situation without having someone rescuing them or a gun.

Child actors are always hit-or-miss in the TZ. They all can't be Bill Mumy! Usually the weaker TZ episodes are the ones too close to rational explanations! But this guy following her around for years...that's unbelievable!

I agree, some can be wooden, but others like Steven Perry from "The Big Tall Wish" or Terry Burnham from this episode, can be convincing and believable enough. 😁

@@trinaq Yeah though it also depends on what kind of character they're portraying. I think Terry Burnham's performance is good because the character Markie is supposed to be this enigmatic, brutally-honest, straight talker so her deliveries fit.

I think it's Douglas Brode in his book on The Twilight Zone who speculates that Helen's trauma (and the motive for the murder) was actually hinted to be Selden's molestation of her (that remark about how he "had a crush" on her), but they couldn't get away with it so they turned it into Selden trying to cover up his thievery instead.

Sheppard Strudwick, who plays the murderer, lent his voice to a few Warner Bros. Cartoons like TOM THUMB IN TROUBLE as Tom's dad, and OLD GLORY as the spirit of Uncle Sam.

What a fucking creep! He kills her mother even tolled her to her face that he had a crush on her when she was a kid and then tried to kill her in her own home not cool man not cool. The only good thing that happen was the fact that he die falling down the stairs, and thank god that her mind worn her about that creep just in time too or he be the one a life not her.

Great episode. interesting seeing the kid get the better of the adult here. The violence implication was a bit stronger than usual, with the intended death of a child, and a man stalking his victim as she grows up. Adult portrays a lost vauge state quite well, she wouldnb't be out of place in a Silent Hill game. The villain is great, invading Helen's body space, inviting himself to stay at many times. Came across very creepy. Keeping the picture on his person all the time. but the death of the killer was a bit flat if im honest, and so was the reveal and maybe even him leaving after she fainted. everything else was great though, and it's too bad Walter has to look down on this episode. I think he doesn't understand the vibe it was going for.

The sad fact is that the part where she doesn’t go to jail for killing the man trying to murder her might be the most unrealistic thing in this episode

I agree, even though it's just a show, it would definitely lead to a manslaughter charge in real life, even if it was it self defence.

I think more highly of this episode. It reminds me somewhat of Hitchcock's Marnie, though that film came later. In the TZ there are several episodes that seem to overlap a little with Hitchcockian ideas. I think of The Hitchhiker and Mirror Image among others. Thank you for an excellent You Tube series. I hope you will look at Night Gallery one day.

I found this episode a little too predictable (I figured out almost right away who Markie and Selden really were) but I did like the ending with Helen and the little girl. It was very sweet. Next stop… Willoughby! (Speaking of which, I’m really sad there’s only two more reviews left. I’m going to miss The Twilight-Tober Zone!)
