NIGHTMARISH BEHIND THE SCENES OF SQUID GAME!

Around 2008, Hwang Dong-hyuk tried to get investment for another movie script he had written, but without success. So he and his mother and grandmother had to take out loans to pay off their debts. But they were still struggling financially because of the economic crisis in the country. In his spare time, Hwang read survival-themed comics from Japan at a comic book cafe. Battle Royale, Liar Game and Gambling Apocalypse: Kaiji, he compared the situation of the characters in these stories to his own life. He thought of the idea of these characters participating in a survival game to get out of debt and during 2009 he started writing a movie script based on this concept.
