For the AE86 idle revs going up and down after you did that coolant change, it's called an air lock. You need to jack the front of the car up and run the car with the radiator cap off, use your hands to squeeze the coolant hoses and you will see bubbles come up from the top of the radiator, the coolant will also go down so keep topping it up until the coolant doesn't go down anymore. After that just keep an eye of the coolant levels for about 3 days to a week when you're driving the car around and make sure it stays topped up. I had the same issue with my civic EK and almost started going at the tachometer wiring. It's just an air lock, don't worry 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I was thinking initially something with TPS actually, but this makes a lot more sense after they did everything regarding coolant and hosing and everything
@cashsumpter75869 ай бұрын
I agree with this to an extent, but it could very well be the coolant temp sensor is either bad, not connected or faulty wiring. I have an aw11 mr2 (4age) and had this same issue with revs bouncing out of nowhere when the car had been running just fine the previous day. The connector had actually backed itself out overtime, but it still looked plugged in. As soon as I pushed it back in to place car went back to running perfect again. So, you should definitely look into that if that doesn't fix your issue.

For the idle hunting issue on the 4age check the TPS sensor and connector and also check coolant temp sensor is plugged in. Also could be a vacuum leak or air bubble in cooling system. Good luck, love the 86 content!

Hey Sam, I used to own a AW11 MR2 with a 4AGE as well (it's not exactly the same setup, but close). I used to have that idle issue as well. With my setup the throttle body is connected to the coolant system. The temperature of the coolant heats a wax type thermostat on the idle control valve, like an automatic choke that closes when the wax in the thermostat melts. Maybe you have something similar or some other system that controls your idle based on vacuum lines (the aw11 is full of vacuum lines). What I did personally is plug up the idle valve bypass/choke system completely by simply blocking a hole inside the throttle body. On top of that (optional, if you still want choke) I used another unused bypass channel, connected a valve (borrowed from sw20 aircon system) to it with a switch, to manually put the choke on. If the choke was longer needed to be on, this idle issue would come up (warm engine) and I could simple turn off the air feed by the switch and it was gone. In reality I would only use it on startup and turn it off when driving off. I hope this makes sense, if you need more info just message me. Also, really bleed that coolant system very well. If you have indeed some similar system the air in the coolant lines can cause issues. Good luck

Air lock on the coolant system,,, had the same situation on my 5 gen Honda prelude, when flushing mi coolant, those 90’s Japanese iAC works with coolant thru on them, so make sure you purge well your coolant system and problem should be away! Cheers good luck
@hobozazz812010 ай бұрын
The surging idle you're getting is most likely due to air in the cooling system. Once you have the coolant leaks fixed, lift the front end of the car up high and run the car with the radiator cap off and the heat turned on. Get the car up to temp and keep topping up the coolant while it's running until there are no bubbles, the heat works well, and the car stops taking coolant. If you rev the car to 2k rpms or so for a bit while it's up to temp that can also help force air out. Good luck!

The struggle is real, I feel your pain and frustration Sam. It makes me mad to know that some cowboy in Ireland did that with the water pump. I've bought my fair share of cars here that had similar dodgy stuff done and I had to spend time and money putting right. You probably have it fixed by now, but the hunting engine is probably a vacuum leak; maybe a hose that cracked when it got disturbed as you were working on the water pump etc.

Your troubleshooting with up and down revs remember me once time when my R33 made this and if it can help you I hope for: I first believed of an electrical issue but in final, it was mechanical issue: for some reasons, my throttle cable was a bit to much loosen so the throttle was "free" to move and it made up and down revs. I was dealing with this issue at 01:00 AM in the middle of nowhere and more than 500kms away from home this happened suddenly to my R33 just after I was doing uphill run (Initial D vibes) but luckily I was surrounded by a bunch of cool friends and one of them had a garage 10mins away and get back to me with proper tools to find then fix this. A bit of situation during late night but it's old memories and with a good end. :) I didn't said again so I have to: nice video even with reality is pain to ass sometime.

Hey! Just wanted to tell you that my Prelude had a up and down idle as well after changing timing belt and waterpump. For me it was the problem that air was in one part of the engine were water should have been. Took a bit of letting it run until the thermostat opened up. It even overcooked a bit. Filled it up after with about 1 liter of coolant that was missing and the idle was fine again. So I would be checking that.
