2nd transmissions were used a lot in home built off road trucks, w/a shortened wheelbase used up here in Northern New England US of A for logging duties.
@tommyhallum205410 ай бұрын
A lot of motorhomes use a overdrive unit Mounted behind the transmission and there's a company that builds them called "gear vendor" essentially, it gives you an overdrive gear for every foward gear so you would have 1st 1 overdrive 2nd 2nd overdrive And so on It gives you a lot of options including using a much higher Final gear ratio for accelerating and it gives you an additional overdrive gear on the high end so that you have better acceleration without robbing you of your top end. Gear vendor builds them for anything from tow rigs to drag racers and rock crawlers. Drag racers love to use the old school two speed power glides because they are bulletproof and putting a gear vinder behind them allows them to have two overdrive gears one for each gear.

Its not that easy to drive since you need to learn the new gearbox style and two gear selectors. My issue is mostly running on certain gear most of the time. For offroad truck this makes sense as you are using whole range pretty much, but daily driver not so much. Still lovely little contraption and i wish some company made cheap couple gears and reverse boxes, but nope those are hella expensive what little is out there. Secondly this would never be road legal here. Just repair welding the subframe is automatic failure in yearly inspection. Seeing this, engineer would get brain aneurism and cause of this only place to use in is on the offroad side, maybe utility vehicle, but that also means it being diesel, witch there is very few around and completely out of price range of average joe.

One popular modification in the Volkswagen community is to take a Suzuki GSXR-1300 Hayabusa engine and mount it in a MK1 Golf [Rabbit in the US]. The engine fits perfectly, since it is approximately the same size as the Volkswagen EA827 engine the car came with, and it is easy to fabricate adapter plates. Since the early Golf was between 1800 and 2100 pounds, this 200 hp engine turns the little car into a raging screaming beast that runs with V8 Mustangs and Camaros.

@@vistakay Thats a significant amount of torque. Im not disputing your point, all things evolve. Dont forget you are comparing a 25 yo sport tourer with a modern superbike. Sport tourers in general are much heavier, larger, and have more torque due to the larger displacement. This alone makes them a better choice for a car conversion. The golden era of superbikes was in the late 90s-early 2000s, and even though the new bikes have higher effect, dont underestimate the torque on the golden era bikes. I ride both modern and classic superbikes, and the new ones have suprisingly little on the classic ones on the straights
