Ho Colin, most of the time I'm on the lowest setting as it can be really easy to blow out the highlight. The actual technique of light painting involves both wide angle and narrow focus depending on the subject size and distance. Very difficult to describe in words.

Great work! But I see one major issue: differences in how different monitors are presenting colors. I'm watching on Galaxy note 8, and on last scene when you are talking to camera and we can see your screen the sky is more blue than on recorded screen from editing part. And this is common issue. I've edited one of my photos on my PC with 100% AdobeRGB and when I use it as wallpaper on my work PC the image was really flat and wash out:/

I like night time shooting and love many of your images. I find that many of my nightscape photography is curtailed because of animals and some bugs. I'm sure you have run into a spider web before, that happens. It's a shock and a mess except when you find a large spider in your car after it climbed off you. Then there are times of extreme concern like when hearing a rattlesnake but have no idea where the sound is coming from. They generally don't bother humans and other large animals unless the snake is just about stepped on, but in the dark, which way do you step! Keep up your work. What do you suggest in places where "nature" happen?
@nightscapeimages.richard5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching George. Most of my photography happens in the cooler months here in Australia so I don't run into too many wild animals. There are plenty of wild kangaroos out on the roads at night but they don't cause me too much bother.

Apart from the tech' in all of your videos, it's the story telling you have mastered. A small suggestion for your workflow in photoshop, use a Group Folder for your Lighten Layers and one mask instead of pasting the mask multiple times. By selecting the background sky and creating a mask of it, you'll have the perfect mask for the foreground subject. When using the brush try using the (Mac) option+command to resize/soften your brush to speed up your process. As always by doing you inspire the rest of the seat warmers!

Hi there, i would like to know how and where do you focus for the forground pictures to manage to get all of it sharp?. I understood that you lower the iso and close the aperture for them, but where do you get your focus point exactly...
@nightscapeimages.richard4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Agustin. I will focus on the main subject of interest in the foreground. In this case the fence post, in other videos on an old truck or car. You muct remember that when you stop down the aperture of the lens you are widening the depth of field so more is in focus anyway.

Great Video, wasn't disappointed. I prefer a little less technical - since it's covered well here - and a bit more composition related videos. A bit more of your mind set in selecting the composition and how your use of the Phone App with Augmented Reality plays into those decisions. Have you tried other celestial bodies? It seems evident the Milky-Way is the compositions anchor, so how do you choose the foreground. You have definitely found an algorithm that fits your workflow. Impressive.
@nightscapeimages.richard5 жыл бұрын
Thanks heaps for watching David, really appreciate your insightful comments. There certainly are other celestial bodies in the night sky and I produced a video a few months ago on that topic. See here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5KteGR3p5J1mKc To be absolutely honest, I spend hours and hours scouting for foreground subjects. As you can see from this video, I'm always looking for something that will stand out against the night sky and actually be the main subject in the shot. Also, you will notice that I'm often focusing on quite small items to be that foreground point of interest. The sky is always the same depending on time of years etc so it's not going anywhere in a hurry. The challenge is finding something to compliment it ... often a subject that everyone else walks straight past.

I found I couldn't get it looking anywhere near 'even' using layers in PS. @nightscapeimages.richard5 жыл бұрын
Hi Rodolfo, the answer is that it doesn't matter because in the foreground shots the trees are all dark. When you enable the lighten blend mode in photoshop it hides anything that is dark. So what this means is that we are using the trees from the background shot. Hope that makes sense.

@nightscapeimages.richard5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, funny you mention the Z6 and the 24mm f4 lens. I'm assuming that's the kit lens 24-70 f4 Z mount. I'm working on a video focused on using that very lens for nightscapes. Yes you'll need to up the iso but I found it's quite good at iso6400 and then a little tweeking in Lightroom to perhaps brighten it up a bit. The Z6 with that lens is very sharp.

Really pleased you like it Jon. It's a really difficult thing to get rid of in post production. I'm very fortunate to live in clear open spaces so I don't have to deal with it at all.

Thank you for all the inspiration. It's been an eye opener for me to see how easy it is to achieve amazing results. One question though: When you edit the masks I noticed that you only use black and white brushes and the feather effect of "big brushes". Is there any technical reason for why you don't use different shades of grey in the mask to make more subtle nuances in the light? It's been cloudy here in Norway for way to long now, I can't wait to go out and capture some frames. Sequator is ready :) Thanks again.

Thank you Erlend. The only way to use grey is to change the opacity of the brush.

Another fantastic video. Have you ever used a small snoot on your light to hid the end from your camera? I made one for mine with some heavy back paper and gaffer's tape.

Thanks Jay, that's not a bad idea.

Hi Rick, funnily enough, I was just thinking today, I hadn't seen a new video from you for a while, then it was there. Again very good. I think I have seen most of your vids but don't recall anything describing how you determine just how much light to use when lightpainting. Maybe you could use thiss topic at some stage, it would be interesting to see how you know just how much to use ( I guess a combination of torch power, distance and time ). By the way, I tried Sequator and was very impressed, I'll be recommending it to my friends. Looking forward to the next video.

Thanks a lot David. As I've mentioned many times, light painting is an art form not science so therefore the amount of light can vary between shots. This is ok as you don't always want or need the same amount of light. sometimes the surface you are lighting is more reflective so less is needed.

Hi, I just got the chance to know your channel, I really appreciate your effort to teach us some good stuff. I am new to photography and I admit I learned a lot from your page. Excited to go outside and try some of your methods. Good job man, really good job.

This is my go-to video for learning light-painting. I always enjoy watching it. I have a semi-technical question I'd like to ask.......when you're light painting at a greater distance from the camera (like you were in this video, with the far fence posts and grass), I'm assuming you're giving that some extra lighting due to the increased distance from the camera? I feel this is a stupid question, but I thought I'd ask anyway :-)

Thanks a lot Simon. Actually, sometimes I get right up close to the fence posts that are a little bit further away and light them .. .then I erase myself and the torch light from the final blended image.

Fantastic video tutorial as always Richard. I'm a big fan of yours now. I need to get out and try this out myself. I have a ton of f/2.8 lenses and only one 50mm 1.2 lens. I wonder how high of an iso I could get away with using the 2.8? Thanks so much. Looking forward seeing more of your work. Cheers.
@nightscapeimages.richard5 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for watching Kevin, really appreciate it How high you can go with iso is dependent on your camera but you can also stack multiple images to reduce noise as per this video.

hey Richard, greetings from Denmark,These are some incredibly beautiful pictures you get made. When you put the tripod on the ground, is there something special you do to prevent it moving during work and is it important with an expensive and very stable tripod?
@nightscapeimages.richard5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Placing the tripod low to the ground helps to keep it stable. I use good tripods but not the most expensive.Keeping the legs spread a little wider helps also.
