Today we explore a simple nightscape light painting composition out under the stars at a farm location. We go from capture in the field through the whole post processing of the final image using lightroom & photoshop.
Sometimes a very simple composition can be made to look absolutely magnificent with a little bit of imagination and vision .. not to mention a healthy dose of nightscape light painting. As they say, one man's junk is another man's treasure ...!!!!
If you're interested in milky way photography or nightscape light painting then check out my other videos in this series. I'm concentrating on how to capture the milky way as well as how to edit the milky way incorporating my fine art light painting techniques.

I've been watching your channel for quite a while now, and i love so many things about it. the way you present is a refreshing change to so many others out there, it is so relaxed and fatalistically informative. I love shooting after dark, there's something so magical about it, and i am inspired from watching these videos to go out and try light painting in the manner you teach. Just a shame the UK suffers so much cloud. Keep up the fantastic work !

This video is absolutely amazing! I can't wait to get started, I have so many ideas in my mind's eye but have only a faint idea of how I can pull it off. So far as a new subscriber, it just amazes me to watch you effortlessly produce this art. So I'm fairly sure I can pull off the photography part however my weakness is with PS knowledge. For the last 4 years or so, I've been a sport photographer concerned with capturing sharp action shots, without. blurring which requires really fast shutter speeds and high iso which at night games is required to achieve shutter speeds of 1/1250 - 1/2500. There is another Australian photographer who produces cinematic YT videos. He lives in Melbourne and loves cityscape/street art. He calls himself Matt Irwin and seems like such a nice guy like yourself. Mr Irwin is a professional working photographer that shares his knowledge via YT. Thanks again for sharing your amazing art work style. Ted in Sebastian, Fl.

Hi Richard. Just a question regarding your torch for light painting. I understand from my research on the LLenser p7.2 torch that the min lumens is 30 lumens and the max lumens is 320. Could you please inform us do you have a specific setting when using for light painting, ie do you use flood or spot when you light paint specific parts of the landscapefor example trees etc. Have you ever used alternative to led lenser 7.2. Once again many thanks. Ian in scotland.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for tuning in again Ian. To be honest I usually use a lower power when light painting as I'm always keen to avoid hot spots in my images. I have used lots of different torches to light paint. I use both wide and zoomed in beams and usually I alternate during the shoot. As I've mentioned many times before .. light painting is more art than science and it's very difficult to explain how to do it in words. It's kind of like driving a car .. you just have to get the feel of it .. there is muscle memory involved as well as a keen eye for watching where you have already painted light. As a general guide I'll zoom the torch to throw the light further and to get into tight spaces. I'll use the wide angle to do general close lighting. Hope that helps.

Thanks so much for watching. When I'm shooting a close foreground subject I'll always stop down the aperture quite a bit. Maybe f8 ... what this does is give me a greater depth of field and more is in focus. Regarding the flashlight being blue . .yes this is a problem with LED lights. So I attach a 1/2 cto gel to the fron of the light to help with this. See here: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/44201-REG/Rosco_RS340811_3408_Filter_RoscoSun.html

Hi Richard - Thanks so much for sharing your awesome talent us - I have a quick question: when you are light painting with let's say 15 sec exposures are you interval shooting or are you running back to the camera every shot? Just kind of curious of how you manage to keep track of what frame you are in when you are walking around with the torch. Seems like your frames are to specific different areas. Thanks.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks heaps for watching John. I use a wireless remote trigger to release the camera shutter. Then I can be in position ready to light without running around in the dark. I only take one image at a time and I usually work from one side of the composition across to the other making sure I light each area that I want to. Sometimes I'll go back and check the images on the camera screen to make sure they are good.

Hi Richard, I am enjoying each of your videos so much. One question (hope it’s not a dumb one!) How do you stay out of the shot while light painting? Wouldn’t the camera pick you up as a blur if you moved through the shot, or do you brush this out in post production? Hope you come to Perth one day for a workshop
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sara, not a dumb question at all .. I actually do get in the shot but as you suggested, I simply brush myself out of the final shot in post. I will do more videos on this technique moving forward.

@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 8 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for watching. Yes when you use the Lighten Blending Mode in photoshop it enables all the lit pixels to be visible and the dark pixels to become transparent . .therefore you can see through each layer to components underneath. That won't happen with Normal mode.

Richard, Gary again, sorry about asking as I am a novice and are inspired from your videos, it is quicker to ask than view all your videos, I am using a Captur remote timer, but I am struggling to understand about the 10 shots at 10 sec each. To achieve the 10 shots do I set my camera to continuous or bulb mode. The settings I have set in Captur are a 2sec delay, 10 sec long,10 interval 1 but I am confused by their manual, hope you can help.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 5 жыл бұрын
No worries at all Gary. When shooting with the intention of stacking multiple images it's best to have the shortest interval possible between shots .. usually 1 second. I usually don't bother programming any devices to do these shots .. I simply press the trigger manually either with a wired or wireless remote. You don't set your camera to bulb mode.

Good picture and good systematic approach in the process. Photography is subjective, personal. I'd have just kept it simple by using flash guns or torches during the exposure without over post production. All you got to do is focus on the scene before dusk, stop the lens down, then during a couple of minutes exposure fire a flash gun or 2 (one on slave mode) and use a torch as a fill. There's a lot of work going into this that is really unnecessary, more about the gadgets than human instinct Still a great image though 😀
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 4 жыл бұрын
I certainly appreciate you watching and for the comment. You haven't mentioned your method of actually capturing the stars ... I can assure you that if you stop down too far you won't see any stars at all. Also your method of capturing the scene before dusk means you'll be doing a composite if you require stars to show. Yes some would prefer to use flash . .sometimes I do that as well.

im a novice and would like to try this on my canon 750d - do you use a intervalometer for the light painting bit or do you just press the shutter then walk to image and light paint each time ?
@nightscapeimages.richard

Thanks for watching Stephen, I use a wireless remote shutter release which means I don't have to keep walking back to the camera to shoot. Also I am in the position I want to be with the light.

I just thought of something after the 3rd view :) of your video. I wonder if you place a cardboard shroud around your flashlight would it contain the stray light that is causing the bright squiggles? I do telescope astrophotography and light/dew shields are very popular to keep stray light out of your telescope tube. Maybe the same would cut down on the bright light squiggles. Although your copying of the layer mask is brilliant and totally eliminates them.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Walter, it may well do that but I don't really have a problem with it because as you said I can easily remove with layer masks.

Hi, sorry to trouble you but when I right click the images in lightroom it doesn't let me have the option of opening in Photoshop at all. It's greyed out. If this because my Images are RAW?
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Marc. It has nothing to do with raw images. I've seen this before. Firstly you need to make sure you are using Lightroom Classic CC for editing. A lot of people get confused with the 2 different versions of Lightroom. The standard cut down version of lightroom is now simply called Lightroom CC and it doesn't have all the features. Try that and see how you go.
@MarcTerryPhotography

You lost me. I thought this was one 15-sec exposure of multiple light paints? In LRC, however, there's multiple images. Is camera set to burst shots? Are you stopping after each painted area then shooting another frame?
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 3 ай бұрын
I'm triggering the camera manually before each shot. The reason I'm taking more than one image is to build the light one shot at a time. This allows for a much better dynamic range and give me precise editing options. This is very difficult to do in one exposure . .especially in a location like this with many trip hazards.

Thanks a lot Gonzalo. I decided to do this series and include the post processing because so many people asked for it. It's quite repetitive really across the last 2 videos and the next 2 as well but I think that's the best way of learning the techniques. Thanks for your comment on the black & white image ... I don't do it a lot but I thought it suited this particular shot.
