So sorry you have been sick Leslie and as a retired nurse I can say don’t rush your healing process because lungs have a tendency to flare back up if you don’t rest and recover fully and we will all be here waiting for you in 2025. Have you thought of just going out to take photos of what inspires you during the winter months but instead of sitting outside in the cold go back and paint in your car with a nice hot thermos of something to drink plus there are so many great little tables that clip onto the steering wheel for your art supplies while you paint. You have been a great inspiration to us all through 2024 so thank you for all your videos and may 2025 be a wonderful year for you…Get Well Soon! ♥️🎨🎄

Get some rest and I look forward to your videos in 2025. I received a Peg and Awl small Sendak from my hubby as a gift for Christmas and it’s full of supplies ready to go outside in the cold and paint. I live in Canada and I invested in battery powered heated socks, mitts and a scarf for the cold weather, game changer. You just recharge the batteries.

Rest a feel better for the New Year. It was so fun to see the Christmas Market in Totnes. I’ve been to Totnes and just loved it. I live in Virginia and went to Totnes because I have a high school friend that lives in Totnes….and were originally from Idaho. I love this big small world. Happy New Year 🎈

So sorry you've been sick! I'm really looking forward to your January videos about getting started making art again after a long pause. I'd love to hear how to approach relearning everything I forgot, especially drawing well without feeling anxiety and panic! 😅 Thank you so much for all of your excellent videos. They help me enormously since I also suffer from immune issues and often don't have a lot of energy. Wishing you all the best for the NewYear!🎉

Hope you recover fully from your bout with pneumonia. Love that you use Kipling bags. I use them for my on the go art supplies and have several that I can use depending on my needs. I have added F rings to their 100 pencil bag for carrying minimal supplies and also find their hip bags and smaller backpacks very useful for when I take supplies while traveling. Plus I can through them in a washing machine if need be.

I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been so unwell and hope that you’re feeling much better now! I loved your tiny painting of the Totnes Christmas market though, it looked so warm & bright! I have the Cara’s d’ache aquarelles, they were my gateway to watercolour but they are great pencils - they even have pigment numbers. I’m sure you’ll enjoy using them. I received some travel watercolour brushes which I am so happy with & im really looking forward to using them in 2025. All the very best to you for the coming year. xx

Hope you’re feeling better. The nurse gave great advice to heal fully! I can recommend a purse light or other small flashlight in your art bag. Along with extra layers and a serious hat, try ‘hot hands’! The store bought kind. We wore everything and used hot hand chemical heaters to survive a day at a Yuletide Renaissance fair.

I hope you completely recover soon those illnesses are completely draining and it’s so easy to get rundown this time of year and have relapses. I don’t think I will ever be someone who can stand while sketching or painting. I’ve seen a few people review Etchr’s smallest travel bag (the nano?) for doing art while standing, but as a ‘sit-down in comfort’ artist, I really haven’t looked into it. Adding in the complexity of doing it at night (in the cold and dark) makes it all rather daunting 😅. I’ll stick with summer Plein-air with a picnic table, park bench (or perhaps a blanket on the grass) in daylight 😂. Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy 2025!

Its so fun to use new mediums to create mix media paintings. When I'm doing outdoor sketch or painting, I tried minimal set-up, a pen pencil, 2 fineliner pen, 1 mop brush, paint pallate, few papers in (18x16x4cm) box. In your case, tripod easel where you can put pouch, rather than in bag might help. Wish you a cheerful 😃☺️✨ New year 🎊 take care🌻

I'm so glad you are on the mend! Thank you for another lovely video, and now that larger palette stack is in my cart, lol! I did get a couple of very nice art gifts this holiday that I am itching to get out and paint with. I got several of A. Gallo's new tube paints. Very excited to try them in my Art Toolkit palette as A. Gallo is my favorite paint but only available in pans til now. I've also been setting up a minimal lightweight plein air kit. I received Jaclyn Baer's new Salka Art Sling pouch. It is super lightweight (only 3 oz.!) and can be carried as a shoulder bag and used like a front sling across the chest or as a front belt bag, or strap removed and set upright on a surface. It holds all my scaled down painting necessities, now to get out there and paint! Wishing you many happy painting outings in the new year ✨💛✨

I love that you received all those ceramic palettes. When I first started looking for ceramic palettes, I found a few stacks of white ceramic coasters at the local thrift stores. They’re great for keeping your paints separate from each other, and if you have enough of them you waste less paint. I sometimes add little sticky notes to the outside lip to remind me what paints I mixed together. Continue to get well!

Leslie, I too suffer from shoulder & back problems, a backpack isn't feasible for me. I have a few old camera bags (for SLR or DSLR type cameras Lowepro brand) that have a waist strap (rather than a shoulder strap) so I'm totally hands free. They are large and roomy (remember built for a camera and 2 to 3 lenses ) I keep my phone, wallet & art supplies inside the bag plus a small headlamp so no matter the light , I'm ready! If I have to stand the Bag itself acts like a table for my sketchbook & palette, one hand has a water brush the other tissue, easy peasy and a wonderful way to repurpose an old but useable SLR Camera bag. Hope this helps you or someone else, Happy New Year!

I always look forward to your videos and this one did not disappoint! That market looked so fun. I also love all the paper folding items. I will try more of those this year.I agree about working in the cold although being here in NE it gets much colder than 42, so that would feel warm to me LOL. I’ve seen chargeable heat vests and coats that might work when painting outside. Or maybe cut down what you bring and just use your mini Sendak. Lastly if it was too cold, I just take several pictures with my phone and then go home and paint while drinking some nice hot chocolate! For Christmas this year, I received Roman Szmal paints and a Khadi fat book (which I hope is good after being held in customs for 3 weeks). I love my Derwent Drawing pencils and I hope you do too. Their color selection is right up your alley, although I wish they had more than 24 colors. Please let us know how the gummed watercolor mini block works out. I almost bought a set of those ceramic dishes. I was in St. Louis Art Supply and they sold these Tonic watercolor paints in ceramic dishes like that. Your blue flowered set was really pretty. I hope you feel back to 100% really soon! Thanks for all your videos.

So glad you are in recovery from your pneumonia. Be sure not to push yourself, I think going out to paint in the cold again, at this stage of your recovery might be a mistake unless your going to do it from the warmth of you Art Car. My beloved gave me for Christmas the big 100 color Gandhi set and the granulating set. I also received a kuretake silver mica ink and finally those very same blue stacked ceramic dish set. So had a little giggle because I too think that the tools we work with (no matter how mundane the task) should be beautiful and in and of itself spark joy.

Thank you so much for your content throughout the year. I prefer the longer form and have very much enjoyed it all. I’ve also got some great ideas from you. I don’t have anyone who gets me art supplies so I have bought myself a few gifts this year. I got the Sendak roll earlier this month. I have an art toolkit set on the way - a tin of paper with a small palette to put some colours in - I have quite a few palettes I got from Rosemary & Co as I love buying from them and I’m so grateful you made the video that told me I could get them locally. But my idea with this set is this will be in a small bag when I go on a walk and am not intending to draw but see something that inspires me. And I have a Kaweco Piston filler fountain pen on the way with a fine nib that I intend to put waterproof brown ink in which will be so easy to carry in my minimal kit. I’m also considering the mini Sendak as a birthday present in February. Please take care and don’t rush to get out there in the cold. We’ve had lots of fog up here in the Vale of York that would not do your recovering lungs good.

@TheMessyDeskxyz22 сағат бұрын
Oh dear, hope you are feeling better now! Get well soon I did quite a lot of urban sketching in the dark, and pretty much only standing up… Only that it’s in the heat because tropical Singapore… 😅 I basically LOVE my etchr field case. The only downside is that it is a bit heavy, the empty field case weighs like 400 grams. But the way I use it is that I have it semi zipped up, and I have it slung across my body with the case horizontal, in front. I don’t use as many supplies as you do, and I have mostly memorised where the locations of my items are, so that helps a lot with the fumbling. On the inner side of my field case (the side closer to my body) is where I have my pencil, fineliners, brush etc. Because I stuff a rather fat 10x10cm sketchbook into the field case, I can’t hold much else on the ‘outer’ side of the pouch. Instead, I have some paper towels for brush cleaning slotted into the elastic meant for the pens, and whenever I need to change colors, I bring my brush down to the pouch/towel, and clean it there instead. I did buy a wrist band after watching your video (honestly my whole urban sketching journey started 90% because of watching your videos!), but could never bring myself to use it in this heat. I’ve got my brush pen, pencil, eraser, fineliners all in the ‘inner’ side of the pouch, and I can locate them by feel. I do carry two fineliners, a thin one that I always use, and a thicker one that I only need on rare occasions… And the thicker one is put further down the pouch so that I can differentiate them by location which is which. I’ve also stuck washi tape on the cap of one of them so that I can tell in dim lighting which is which. The less used items like the masking fluid and white pens are in the back, large pocket of the field case. I basically barely ever use those. I’ve got my tiny 3D printed palette in the front mesh pocket of the field case. A tiny spray bottle is there too but again, I practically never use it. And I’ve got clips clipped onto the top big pocket of the field case for holding the palette(s). I have more palettes in the big pockets as well because I can’t bring myself to use that few colors, and also because mixing colors in the dark/yellow lighting is just such a pain. I mostly just mix greens with greens etc, rather than make my own green from scratch because it’s too much trouble. Sometimes I’m just mixing purely by feel/faith, because it’s so dark that I can’t even see the colors on my palette (good thing I organised it by color family, so I know if it’s colors beside the light green, it’s darker versions of green… and of course, I’m not very familiar with my main palette after using it for so long), how much paint my brush is picking up, etc. I find that yellow tends to just not show up at all in yellow street lighting/dim conditions. I end up typically making things more yellow than I imagined in my mind because I am always afraid that my brush didn’t pick up any yellow… But it gives a different end result that I have not disliked thus far so it’s a fun surprise when I walk to somewhere brighter and see my painting properly for the first time. 😂 Oh gosh, I have stumbled a little into the realm of letter locking before… It’s a deep rabbit hole! That’s a lot of ceramic palettes you got, they look lovely! The caran dache mechanical pencil looks awesome, now you’re tempting me! 😂

I also have mittens like yours, but I pair them with silk glove liners. I cut off the very tips of some of the fingers so I can use my phone, etc. They don’t seem to fray. I’ve also seen some urban sketchers use very small and packable camp stools that fit in a bag. I don’t own one, but compared to standing in the cold they seem worth a look. Hope you find just the right set up for you!

First of all, I’m so glad you are on the mend. Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Love your videos, it’s what I watch Sunday mornings. Note on that pocket purse, I saw that video last year and fell in ❤ with the idea. I immediately made one for my brand new grandson as a keepsake for Christmas. Then valentines and Halloween. I still have them as he is only 1 and will give them in a box to treasure as years go by. I have old coins that were my fathers and my grandmothers and put one of them in each purse. I agree they are a lot of work. Takes me a couple of weeks to complete. So, I think the “honeymoon” with them might not last as long as we think. Who knows. I immediately made your new one as a prototype to have on hand. I think I will do these also for variety. Only very special people get these lol. I don’t want them tossed in the trash. Happy New Year.

Hello Leslie and big well wishes to you, that double pneumonia and pleurisy sounds just horrible. Sometimes the old fashioned but true remedies are easily forgotten but are so effective, steaming bowl of water with towel over your head to make a 'tent' and breathing it in, heat is germ busting and the steam will break down some of the 'gluey' and enable you to have a good cough out after. Add some salt to the water for extra germ busting too. You can also buy a salt pipe to breathe through for same reasons. A trip to some salt caves too, even! Oh and fresh root ginger or organic powdered, as a tea, deals with fluid imbalances in the body (from TCM, traditional Chinese medicine). Child of heavy smokers, my wife's contribution, this, as her lungs are a bit of a weaker spot too! Been a glue factory for a month and this has helped a lot. Sometimes in Lidl's middle aisle, they have 'base layers' sold as separate top and leggings, under their crivet brand, basically modern 'thermals' in brighter colours usually with black. Keeps heat at your core but the material wicks away moisture. About £10 for each. Will be ideal to protect your chest/legs more without bulking out your normal clothes. We have them and can recommend! They also sometimes sell nebulisers too, this may be something to ask a pharmacy about as may help to have one at home. You can knock coldy infections like this down quicker if you have some go to's to stop minor things getting a grip. Raise your body temp by getting into a hot bath, steam will help too. Sometimes we forget the basics. A new form of Vitamin D delivery (a spray to the inside of your cheek) is available from Better You brand. Avail from their website, Holland and Barrett and some drugstores/pharmacies. We use the one with vit K2 for added absorption, but if K2 an issue if on some other meds, there's a plain Vit D also. Loved all your 'long form' videos, because we still have attention spans (!) so thought we'd give you a 'long form comment' too as our Healthy Happy New Year Wishes! PS Go Draw has put up more shorts & some of their palette production process on their YT channel with link to their shop too. You nearly needed to replace your water with vodka at that Xmas market but painting outside in Russia in below freezing temperatures using vodka instead of water was a great tip. But put your base layer on first and have your hot bath drawer at the ready soon as you get through the door though! Happy painting adventures in 2025, Leslie, thanks so much for your inspiring channel. 👩❤👨

If you’re trying to save your shoulders, what about a waist pack? There are packs made for cyclists that have a few pockets, and ones for fly fishing which have room for all kinds of gadgets. And all kinds of survivalist packs that thread onto a belt…

A friend of mine recommended vitamin C years ago as soon as you feel the tickle. That was well over 20 years ago.

I haven't worked with pencil crayons in what seems like forever! I have Prismacolour, mostly, as well as some very old pencil crayons that I've had since I was in....Jr. High? High School? The very early 90s at least. But I'm curious to see what Caran d'Ache pencil crayons are like! I just got fed up with Prismacolours after a while, because I would sharpen then, and then the lead would break, sharpen, break, and so on. In the past, I used to use a combination of markers (Prismacolour, Copic, or WInsor & Newton brand) with pencil crayons and it made the colours just so nice and solid and pop out! Been missing that lately, but I also remember the hand cramps I used to get from using the colourless blender pencil. Maybe the next time I visit NYC, I'll check out the Blick store there and see if they have the Caran d"Ache pencils there (hopefully they do!), because I doubt Michael's and JoAnn's would have that brand in their stores. Last time my hubby and I were in NYC, we visited the Brooklyn Art Museum and I got myself a box of watercolour pencils from their souvenir shop. Haven't tried them out yet, I'll need to do that sometime. No art supplies for me for Christmas, but I did get a bunch of cool things/knick knacks that will look nice whenever I get my art studio to my liking (some neon LED lights, organizers, etc.

Sorry you had a rough month and glad you’re on the mend. I’ve dabbled with art off and on forever but haven’t in a long time. Your videos inspire me to get out and explore with watercolor. It’s on my list of resolutions. I need something to lift my mood. Lost 3 pets within a 10 day period two years ago and it has been so rough.

Will it work to put the pens/pencils/brushes into the credit card keeper and leave the small zipper bag at home?

Oh no, I hope your brother has a swift recovery. Aside from an A&E visit and a few doctor visits, I was fortunately able to avoid hospitals. A happy & healthy new year to you and yours.

@LeslieStroz My brother is doing much better. This last Saturday my 7 siblings and their spouses went from the Denver, Colorado area to Pueblo West, Colorado to have lunch with my brother and his wife at their favorite restaurant. Afterward they gave them their Christmas gifts. He is still tired and needs rest. I had pneumonia in July 2003. Just went to the Dr. But, boy did it take me down for a few weeks. You know, you have to have rest and you feel the need to rest. Take time to heal and take care. Your art supplies will wait for you. Happy New Year!

Oh goodness, please take care of yourself. A Chinese acupuncturist once told me that eating citrus peel helped the lungs. You may want to try nibbling on peels from organic oranges or lemons. As lovely as the winter landscape is, I cannot bring myself to stand in one place and paint. Just can't handle the cold. I'm curious, is there a reason you were holding the candle? A blessed, healthy, happy new year to you and your family.
