This is such a deeply personal song to Tuomas, I think it's fairly clear that it's about his pain and torment of unrequited love - many have speculated that Tarja was the one who Tuomas loved - I tend to agree, but that may be wrong! 🤘

Those lyrics are deep, he had no idea what was to come. Brings back memories from the early days of listening to Nightwish. Kai Hahto said just in an interview that for the European tour in November they will have new songs, couple of surprises on the setlist, songs that no one can really expect to be performed again. Can't wait for that.

This song is part of the album Century Child, released in 2002. Tarja was still in the band and had started a relationship with Marcelo, her current husband. Tarja's dismissal was a very dramatic episode. The relationship between her and the band had been bad for some time, so at the end of 2004 she decided to tell the band that she would leave. The idea was to record one last album and go on a farewell tour. She wanted to announce her decision to the public and prepare fans for the vocalist change, however, Tuomas convinced her not to do so at the time. It turns out that, after that meeting, the band planned a public firing on the sly. They delivered a letter to Tarja at the end of the "End of an era" show and posted it on the band's website the next day. The band made several accusations against Tarja and her husband. It was a scandal. In response, Tarja wrote a letter and held a press conference to respond better to the group's accusations. Her husband also spoke. He answered more than 150 questions from fans around the world and posted the answers on the internet. Given the reports that were brought and other available records, including videos and documentaries, a large part of the fan base revolted against the band. Faced with criticism from different sides, Tuomas fell into a depression and wrote "The poet and the pendulum" as a way of dealing with the situation. Some say that Tuomas suffered from unrequited love for Tarja. This feeling would have been the fuel for the composition of some songs. The question of Tuomas' love for Tarja is actually an old theory of fans. This theory was built even before Tarja's dismissal, and is based on old interviews and on the lyrics that Tuomas used to write. The depression itself and the song "The poet and the pendulum" can, in theory, be read as a reflection of this love drama. Regardless of whether this theory about Tuomas is true or not, the fact is that bringing internal issues to the public was the worst choice. A lot of the band's past has been brought up and no one has come out unscathed. Because of the scandal, Tarja lost some fans and contracts for her solo career. On the other hand, the band also lost fans and had little-known events brought to a wider audience. For example, Tarja suffered an attempted sexual abuse in the middle of a concert in Guadalajara in 2000. At the time, the band continued playing as if nothing had happened, even after Tarja left the stage along with the criminal and the security guards. There are videos of the episode here on KZbin. Later, after Tarja left, the band itself mentioned the event in its official biography. The way the band decided to fire Tarja and the facts of the past that were brought to public knowledge infuriated many fans. To get a sense of how big the fan base was in the past, look at the number of views of the first videos with Anette ("Bye, bye, beautiful" and "Amaranth"). These numbers are representative of the fan base situation at the end of Tarja's period and beginning of Anette. The first album with Anette was the band's first album ever released with KZbin ever running. We were all curious to know who the new singer was and what she sounded like. Unfortunately Anette didn't please a large part of the original fan base, which also contributed to the band losing more fans. This is for sure the best song Thomas has ever written. And no, Floor didn't learn the setlist in 48 hours, because she had already toured with Nightwish with her old bands, and already sang Nightwish songs with After Forever, such as "She Is My Sin", even sang better at the time than today. Anyway, they overestimate some things too much and forget about wonderful songs like this. I hope I never see this song live again, because otherwise it will lose its magic.

From Century Child in 2002. Beauty and the Beast is from the first 7-track album, Angels Fall First in 1997 and has Tuomas singing. Beauty OF the Beast was aged in the Tour of the Century tour, to promote the album. Beauty And the Beast was played in every tour up to and including the Tour of the Century - more often than Beauty OF the Beast in fact. There's a lot of interesting things in early songs like The Carpenter (which can be found live at Buenos Aires 2018 with Troy on male vocals), Lapping (Lapland), and the original eponymous song "Nightwish" which was one of the three initial demo tracks Tuomas made. I talked about the fact they are different sings in an email a while back. The Poet and the Pendulum will never be played again and charts Tuomas' journey through the emotions of depression and of hate from Tsrja fans after she left. Master Passion Greed was never played live as far as I know, and never will be. It expresses the feelings they had for Tarja's husband and manager at the time and is probably their heaviest (though Dead Gardens always strikes me as pretty heavy too). Nice to see Wolfman back again!

This re-master from the Nightwish Arena channel is about the best for audio, though the video quality is still a bit ropey. New one for me as well, Tarja is so haunting. Annette was upset when a replacement was brought in for Denver, the female front singers from supporting bands, well worth watching, as long as you know that they had about ten to fifteen minutes to prepare! Some ignorant complaints that they had lyrics on paper. Floor had toured a few concerts with Nightwish in her previous band, she knew their sound and sang her freestyle version of GLS in the shower, hahaha!

I remember Romper Room. That show ran from 1953 until 1994! Wow! This song was from 2002’s Century Child. Marko wrote the music for Part 1, Emppu co-wrote (with Tuomas) part 2, and Tuomas composed part 3, and wrote all the lyrics. Beauty AND the Beast was on their first album Angels Fall First, and one of 4 songs Tuomas sings on. Neither song were chosen for their Decades project, nor their Highest Hopes compilation, which was the best of the Tarja years, nor in End of an Era. They never once performed either with Anette or Floor. They last performed both live in 2003. Yes, Wolfman! Troy DOES play bouzouki! (7 Days to the Wolves would be a good reminder of that.) To respond to Suesue's questions, Tarja's last concert with Nightwish was in 2005. You have seen Phantom of the Opera and High Hopes from that show. I always have a funny feeling watching that performance, knowing that all the guys knew what was going to happen but Tarja didn't. The emotional song that followed the split was Poet and the Pendulum, which I think you have seen, and it deals with Tuomas' depression due to the hate he received for firing Tarja even though it was a band decision. It is this song that Tuomas has said won't be performed again because he doesn't feel like that any more.

Even though music for this song was written by Tuomas, Marko and Erno, lyrics in Beauty Of The Beast are very personal for Tuomas and for Tarja. This song was performed live only by Tarja. I don't think this song will ever be sung live again. Beauty and the Beast is also a very good song. If you've never heard Tuomas sing it, I recommend you check out the album version. But live version from "From wishes to eternity" is great, also because Tuomas doesn't sing there)))

The Anette parting story, as I understand it...and correct me if I'm wrong... is, the band was on a long world tour when she became pregnant w her 3rd child. She made an agreement w the band that should she be unable to continue, a substitute would be brought in. Unexpectedly, Anette was hospitalized for an abdominal illness and asked the band to postpone shows, instead of honoring her agreement to bring in a sub. I believe there was some difficulty before this episode as well...some harsh exchanges happened, and the decision was made to let her go permanently.

Tuomas writes the best music there is. This is on the 2002 album "Century child" when Floor did not know anything about this band yet. Guess who was his muse....By the way they have done this live too. "Master Passion Greed" is the song which Tuomas will never do at live because it is a dirty and anger mocking song directly for Tarja's husband.

Yes, they are 2 different songs. This is the last song on the 4th album, Century Child , the first album with Marko. One of their songs that are divided into sections, this one has 3. I.Long Lost Love. II One More Night to Live. III Christabel. Marko wrote the music for Part I, Emppu co-wrote the music on part II. The other song you mentioned, Beauty AND the Beast, was on the first album, and is one of 4 songs that Tuomas sings on in studio. You asked if there is a live version. Yes, Beauty of the Beast Live in Amsterdam (2002). 2005 Helsinki concert (End of an Era) was Tarja's last show. The Poet and the Pendulum, Bye Bye Beautiful, and Master Passion Greed were the 3 songs relating to the breakup, none of those are played today. MPG has never been played live.

Toumas and Floor had already come to an agreement that she would finish the rest of the tour when Annette had her baby. She did have to speed up her learning of the setlist though. Annette was fired because she got sick and ended up in the hospital. Tarja has made up with them since. She even performed with Marco in 2017. Before joining NW, Floor called Tarja to get her approval first. They’re good friends, so she didn’t want any bad blood. Of course, Tarja didn’t care, and gave her some advice.
