So yeah, Alice Cooper played before Nightwish and some of us who had enjoyed that set were kinda winding down.. We didn't know much about Nightwish but there was a ton of excitement in the crowd so we decided to hang out... And then THIS happened and everyone went berserk including us! You never forget the first time you see them and hear Floor... I was totally smitten and have followed them since! They are the best! Thanks for the fun reaction! Ciao!

Yes this was the show opener. What makes it more impressive is that most of the fans had not seen Floor with Nightwish before as she was new to the band and still not a full time member. What an introduction!

I've really enjoyed watching you guys work your way through the Wacken concert. This concert/live album (showtime, storytime) was a major turning point in Nightwish's history. Before you move on to more songs, I think this is a good time to get a brief history lesson. Nightwish pioneered the "Symphonic Metal" genre by combining metal instruments with a classically trained opera singer named Tarja Turunen. They made 5 albums together before Tarja was publicly fired in an open letter immediately following a live tour(end of an era). The split was a catastrophe for Nightwish. It took 3 years to produce another album with a new singer, Anette Olson. Tuomas was considering killing himself, but wrote the song "The Poet and the Pendulum" instead. During the tour for the following album the band had yet another falling out with their lead singer, resulting in her termination mid tour. Floor Jansen learned the set list during her flight from the Netherlands to Colorado and has been with the band ever since. This is in no way a complete history, but I hope it gives you a little more context moving forward.

She owned the stage and all 82,000 of the crowd the whole show, was magical. Floor was not even a real member at this point, and stand in vocalist.

Wacken is a festival, so there's multiple stages and acts going for days. The band opening directly for Nightwish was Trivium who played until 8:45pm, and then Nightwish started at 10:45pm. So technically Trivium was the last to play on that stage before Nightwish, there was two hours between. My guess is people viewed acts at other stages in the festival grounds between.

Tarja was Nightwish's original singer. She has a very successful solo career and often appears at big festivals. She is an absolute killer singer (very operatic) and you guys NEED to listen to some of her Nightwish material. I suggest the End of an Era concert from 2005, which was her last performance with the band: Slaying the Dreamer Phantom of the Opera The Siren Sleeping Sun Wishmaster And just a heads-up, there is no drama or rivalry between Tarja and Floor. They get along with each other very well. Some fans like to create drama, though, but it's all fan-fabricated.

One is because a lot of what they're already covering is based on material from that era; and also because people inevitably will make comparisons. So it's good to have experience with both eras to gain a better overall perspective.

Have to disagree about live vs. studio. Live is for the performance and the energy etc. Lots of musical details are in the studio tracks that don't come through live, so each has it's own purpose, it doesn't have to be either/or. Nightwish's studio albums are exceptionally produced. Yeah, Tarja is the OG singer, met Tuomas and Emppu in high school and joined their little musical project that turned into a metal band. There's over 20 years of Nightwish to explore, don't get stuck in only the recent years.

Wacken in Germany like Hellfest in France normally sell out within a couple of hours, a day at the most. Floor was new to the audience (only been with Nightwish as a replacement singer for 9-10 monts) and at the time this was the biggest she's ever done (82000) - Not that you can see that, not even for the concert opener.

This is proper way to open a show. Afterburners (literally!) at full blast right from the start!!!! You know it is a show opener, because Tuomas is still having his hat on :-)

At a concert, yes, openers don't get the full kit, but Wacken is a festival. There are five stages and a couple of more informal venues, and the whole place (a small town, essentially) is built from scratch in pasture for the event, and has to be pristine afterwards - so you have one heck of a crew involved. Cool jobs like backstage and front of stage through to less cool jobs like dealing with the amount of waste that 82k people generate in 4 days, fire marshalls on the campsites, plumbing, electricians, scaffolders, fencing erectors, recovery crews to haul stranded vehicles out if it rains, first aid, and all the rest. Then there are vendors and caterers. No way were there less than 3,000 people invovled in running it, mostly as volunteers for food and passes. That is how I met my wife, in August 1986, both stewards at a festival, so btdt, but the t-shirt doesn't fit these days. I tried for a long time, but they only stretch so thin before giving out. Thankfully the marriage has outlasted the t-shirt! But the only bands that get exclusivity, with no other stage or venue active are the headliners each day, and particularly the last night, which is exactly what Nightwish were doing - closing out the festival. The two largest stages alternate, to give continuity while allowing the band's crew time to set up the stage, and immediately preceeding Nightwish on the adjacent stage had been Alice Cooper. That all sounds great and all, but it does mean that no band has all the attendees there to see them, so you have to capture the fans who are mainly there to see others, so the opener is critical in capturing them. This did it's job as well as any I've come across. I gather from those that were there (sadly, not including me), nobody left after Alice Cooper, or at least not far enough not to turn right around and join the back of the crowd. I'll be generous and say they needed a potty break :-)

Tarja was the first singer of nightwish and after she was fired she started her solo career and she has some pretty fantastic songs. If you wanna check her out I suggest her song no bitter end, it's one of my favorites, and underneath. Just beautiful! ❤️

Haha..what a fun is it watching you!! In all your reactions you mentioned how big the crowd is. NW did Wacken also in 2018. The quality is less than the 2013 version but there are some great shots of the crowd at 13.50, 25.17 en 28.03 . It was very hot and dry that day, 40 degr C and Floor in a leather outfit..pffff. Perhaps you can take a sneak peek!! Stay safe.

Wacken 2013 was done in the evening so unless you've been there or seen other clips with performances during the day, difficult to imagine a crowd of 82,000. Nightwish Wacken 2018 performance does give you a full view shots of the venue during daylight. This will give you better appreciation of the crowd.
