Oh well that's cool. 😊 I have to dig deeper into the Nightwish history, I know something happened but I forget what exactly - I didn't know if there was bad blood between her and the band or not.
@tuuli40024 күн бұрын
@nikkireviews Basically, the reason why everything went wrong between the band and Tarja, is miscommunication. It was all fueled with bad management from both sides. It's a lot of he said she said but I think the truth lies somewhere between what Tarja has said and what Tuomas and the band has said. We still don’t know exactly what happened, but after all, that's their business. Tarja was fired with an open letter after this concert....which is not a very good way to fire someone. Tarja basically found out that she was fired at the same time as the rest of the world found out. But yeah, things didn't go down well with them. However, that's all in the past. It seems that both sides have accepted that they both did wrong things and have moved on. Marko apologised from Tarja in 2017 and they are friends again. (And their tour together is starting soon) With the rest of the band Tarja hasn't really been in contact except for occasional emails with Tuomas about business things. And with Floor Tarja is friends and apparently they keep in touch every once in a while.

@@nikkireviews End of an Era is such a bittersweet experience. Such an amazing concert, but that has this shadow that hangs over it. As a result some song lyrics take on additional meaning. For Years Tarja had expressed her interest in starting a family with her new husband and doing some solo work, but Tuomas seemingly want to have undue control of her life. Whether he was actually romantically in love with her or just the idea of her (a muse or love of her musical potential) is speculated by fans, but what's obvious is that her voice is unique and she would not easily be replaced. Publically firing her with the open letter was brutal. The second female lead vocalist (Anette Olson) was not a good fit for the legacy songs, so the band transitioned to a more mainstream sound, which brought them commercial success, but it didn't feel like the same band anymore. Anyway, when Floor was brought into the band, she was able to breathe life back into the legacy songs, but also perform all the Anette-era songs without issue. She is a great fit for the band. And when Floor decided to have baby and do some solo work Tuomas didn't fire her in an open letter. Perhaps that is acknowledgement that he learnt from the terrible way that he treated Tarja twenty years ago. As a fan back in 2005, the way things went down was a huge shock, heartbreaking & so disappointing. I lost interest in the band for a few years after that, but a few years ago I started revisiting that great music, and Floor does a great job with most of the old songs as well.... And then Marko left...

Tuomas love song for Tarja. There is a lot of story behind that, Tuomas and Tarja knew each other since the age of 12, same town and school. When Tuomas wanted to form a band he was going towards folk/acoustic with female vocals. Tuomas knocked on Tarja's door and asked her if she wanted to join the band, she agreed. When they were rehearsing and Tarja sang, the guys were shocked of how powerful and dramatic her voice was so he changed direction and that's how Nightwish was born from Tarja's voice otherwise there would have not been a Nightwish. This band was known and were recognized by the their unique sound, mixing metal/opera and the Nightwish back then was true symphonic metal, not to mention Tarja's unique voice that separated her from the rest and the typical generic voice. People noticed this band not only for the music but because of Tarja's presence and face of Nightwish. People forget where it all started, if it wasn't for her voice this band wouldn't have existed, Nightwish with Tarja is the original sound of Nightwish and what they were known and recognized for, was magical. There are no love songs written after Tarja, all the popular songs including *Ghost Love Score* were originally written in Tarja's era for her voice, later was reconstructed to fit other singers voice. There are many interviews with things Tuomas said that no one paid attention to, documentaries and body language which you can't fake, shows that Tuomas had feelings for Tarja. Again love songs was only written in her era, and Ghost Love Score Tarja's live version which people miss is the ending is different but the original live and if you put the subtitles you will hear the words that the choir is singing and it says a lot and that gets missed in other versions. In a live interview Tuomas said about Tarja *Tarja is the best Interpeture of my music and feelings* Many agree and many may disagree but you can't fake emotions and body language, if you see pictures and interviews you see it in Tuomas eyes, can't fake love. I have been listening to Nightwish since the late 90's. This band has a lot of amazing hidden gem of songs, including when they were younger "baby Nightwish" and they still sounded amazing with young Tarja and her powerful voice. Thank you for reacting to Tarja, I hope you will do more reactions on the original Nightwish songs and some older ones, you won't be disappointed, it's where it all began. Just like yourself Nikki, I discovered Nightwish with Floor as their lead vocalist. The Wacken 2013 live version of this song with Floor, I really really love. I was thinking to myself that if I had heard this version first, I believe I would have loved this version quite a bit initially and then the Wacken performance wouldn't have had as much an impact. Both versions are outstanding and I only give this version an ever so slightly better tag just because I know the song was written for Tarja and her vocal performance , I believe, reflects how Tuomas meant for it to be sung. Nonetheless, a great song performed immaculately by both Tarja and Floor. Like yourself Nikki, I now will vow to never compare Tarja and Floor head to head. Only point out differences in styles. We're just blessed to be living in a time where we can be entertained by both.

Floor is great with most of the legacy songs. She can easily perform any of the Anette-Era songs, but when it comes to songs from the Tarja-era things are a bit more complicated. Some songs were created with Tarja's voice in mind. Tarja's voice when singing high notes has a richer tonal quality (creates more frequencies around the note that she sings) and this is very noticeable when the song demands an operatic style. By analogy, Tarja's voice is more like a section of an orchestra with different instruments playing the same note at the same time. While on paper Floor can sing the same note, Floor's voice when she sings in the operatic style is like single instrument playing the note. I believe the technical term for this is Timbre (or vocal "color"). So Timbre is the fundamental difference between their voices, with Tarja's voice being a fuller sound when singing high notes. Stylistically Tarja is very operatic and incorporates strong vibrato, whereas Floor has a more mainstream rock vocal, but is obviously capable of hitting high notes when singing in a classical style, but vibrato is less pronounced or completely absent. A technical aspect in favor of Floor is her pronunciation of the English lyrics, which is also very palatable to American audiences, whereas Tarja's pronunciation during live performances is occasionally with a very strong accent, and the inconsistency can be noticeable. English was not Tarja's first or second language, so her pronunciation was always driven by her European roots. Anyway, Floor is a great performer for 95% of the Nightwish catalogue of songs. The notable exceptions in my humble opinion are: *Gethsemane* - Floor changes lyrics and her operatic switch sounds incongruent and flat. You have to listen to the Studio album to hear the song performed properly *The Siren* - Floor is no real substitute for Tarja as this was tailor-made for Tarja's voice and style *The Phantom of the Opera* - The vocal chemistry between Tarja & Marko at End of an Era is pure magic (also Marko sings the correct lyrics for The Phantom) Tarja's approach in this song elevates it above typical classical performances as her voice is rich and she expertly uses vibrato. Marko and Tarja put the "Phantom" and "Opera" in "The Phantom of the Opera" *Sleeping Sun* - A song that was tailor-made for Tarja's voice and operatic style Nemo - Nemo is a tragic song so Floor's triumphant tone (music theater kid bursting into song) while belting of lyrics at the end of the song are incongruent with the emotion that the lyrics evoke. So Tarja's darker tone is the correct emotional interpretation IMHO. *Stargazers* - Floor sings in a lower key; it's just not the same. Anyway, thank you for reading this long comment.

I'm sorry but Tarja or any other band singer humiliates Floor very badly
@alexr88177 күн бұрын
I Agree. Floor's classical vocals sound very flat, that's how mostly self-taught singers sing. It also prevents her from singing more complex operatic arias. Tarja studied to be a classical singer, naturally her timbre is more beautiful, bright and versatile.
@Boa_Omega6 күн бұрын
Only to say Tarja studied German Lied singing. A form of Chamber music for a theatre. Centuries before amplification was a thing. Singers had to project their voices to the back walls. paneling bounced it back to the audience. Then they had to sing between the back up chorus and the orchestra keeping time with the swings in tempo and pitch of the song. That indeed takes practice, especially as to not injure yourself. Many singers blew out their voices pushing what must not be pushed trying to create power and volume when they are not in a place where there muscles are relaxed but tensed up.Watch how Tarja relaxes her jaw and pulls away the mic when she belts. How she shows her teeth. Her entire body is wide open and she uses her body to build a foundation on which to build up power. Yes to vibrato and legato in her voice. Tarja has a master's degree (5 years) in Music. Now two things, Tarja is 5 years older than Floor and was on tour for Century Child when they 1st met. So yes an 18 year old Floor was star struck meeting Tarja and NW then. Floor had started her 1st band's gig as frontwoman and invited to be the opening act in Europe that Summer. A huge milestone for the band. Floor and Tarja became friends and the drama had nothing to do with Floor. She remains friends with everybody. Tarja far from being upset that She wanted to join the old bandmates and replace Anette gave her private, then public support. On stage at Female Voices of Metal Fest 9, 2012 They sang Over the hills together . Then announced Floor had a new project/band and called for "No hate, Only love." You don't get more class than that. Setting Floor up for every chance at success. Yes that rural Finnish Kittee accent is thick even inside Finland. Think NE England or Tennessee USA. That nasal twang you know in a heartbeat, or cajun french influenced from Louisiana. How do you think it sounds singing songs in languages other than English? Its part of diversity that IS a wonderful thing. 80% of Finns can speak some English. Tarja in fact is fluent in 5. Including Finnish, English, German and Spanish. passable in a few others. I only have English.

I'll write a not popular version for new fans of band. Thing is that Tuomas wrote a lot of love songs and 90% of all these songs were written in first 10 years with Tarja in lineup. Also Tuomas and Tarja always put their emotions on paper and turned them into beautiful songs. You Nikki, as I see you like to delve into lyrics and it might be interesting to dig into this topic. Relationship between Tuomas and Tarja can be judged mostly by circumstantial evidence. One of circumstantial evidences is band's artwork itself. Most of Nightwish's lyrics, from Angels fall first to Imaginarium, tell us about the development of a relationship with the object of their adoration. We can categorize work into three stages of the relationship: Angels fall first, Oceanborn and Wishmaster are lyrics about falling in love, lust and passion, Century child and Once are about jealousy and confusion and alienation, and finally Dark Pasion Play is about pain, separation and acceptance. First stage covers time of youth and adolescence - meeting, school (Tarja and Tuomas went to same school and have known each other since childhood), forming band, and up to 2000. Second phase is from 2000 until Tarja's dismissal (during this period Tarja met her future husband and got married) and third phase after Tarja's dismissal. And to further understand point, you need to delve into lyrics of relationship songs.

I respect Tarja as a vocalist and without her Nightwish wouldn’t have been the band it both was and became. The only reason we have this “political divide” as to whose best between Tarja and Floor is because Floor is so damned good. In the Wacken concert the last chorus after the mini breakdown where the song steps up in a higher key and the music becomes more frenetic. Floor belts out in a much higher and more piercing key than Tarja does which I feel brings the song to a different level. How many other bands have ever had three lead singers and remained so popular with the fan base? Very few bands manage to change their lead singer even once and keep their head above water. That’s how good Floor Jansen is. I have a sneaking suspicion that if you asked all past and present members of the band who their favourite singer was in confidence, they would all say Floor.

I was thinking the same thing about the last chorus. Tarja sounds great and powerful no doubt, but doesn't have the range of Floor. I know higher doesn't automatically make it better either. @@nikkireviewsI will give a brief explanation: Tuomas was completely in love with Tarja but this love was not reciprocated and this practically ended their relationship to the point of dismissing her from the band, with a cowardly letter. ps: after these years Marco asked Tarja for forgiveness and today the other members of the band are great friends...

@@nikkireviewsYes. Toumas has a bad reputation. Only new fans that found NW on reaction videos idealize him. He did Tarja, Sammy, and Annette, dirty.

Tuomas (keyboards) was surely emotional because he (and the band) knew that this would be Nightwish's final performance w/ Tarja on vocals... Just feeling the vast potential of the band and knowing that it was over... and Nightwish would be without a singer the next day was probably weighing heavily on him. Tarja revealed in an interview that she knew thing were tense in Nightwish in '05 but she wasn't aware that they were going to fire her... In their documentary, Tarja did not even show up for the rehearsals for this final show - they waited for her and then, opted to rehearse without her because they had a guest performer (John Two-Hawks) for this concert. In any case, the final show in Helsinki went spectacularly and was filmed for a DVD release... Tarja was ecstatic after the show and all their families were backstage afterwards... She was overjoyed but the band members seemed somewhat quiet... Before she left for home, they handed Tarja an envelope and told her to open it in the morning... "It could wait," they told her. Anyway, the next day, Tarja recalled making breakfast and opened the envelope - there was a letter inside and she was shocked - it was basically a letter detailing her termination from Nightwish... She couldn't even process what had happened before her phone started ringing and her friends were calling to console her... They told her that the 'open letter' had been posted online on Nightwish's website. From Tuomas's point of view, he was frustrated that all of Tarja's business decisions were handled by her husband, who was now her personal manager... and he kept making financial demands in 2004 /'05 that Nightwish could not agree to... A whole US tour was scrapped because the money was not enough and Tarja declined to do it... A sold out concert in Oslo, Norway was canceled because Tarja declined to show up... And she made plans to record a solo album and (allegedly) told Tuomas that she would record 1 more album w/ Nightwish before leaving the band... Tuomas wrote in the letter that he could not write songs for her to sing, knowing that this was hanging over his head... So, it was in the best interests of Nightwish to part ways w/ Tarja and get a new singer who could deliver and work w/ the band. Nightwish would not perform for 2 years after this show in '05... Tarja worked on her debut solo album 'My winter storm' (released in '07) while Tuomas wrote what became the 'Dark passion play' album without a singer... After months of auditions, they decided to hire Anette Olzen as the new Nightwish lead singer in '07 and surprisingly, her debut album w/ Nightwish actually outsold the previous album 'Once' w/ Tarja on vocals.

I think you know why Tarja didn't come to rehearsal of show and why show might not take place at all. Tarja was very ill and fact that she would be able to sing at all was known only a few hours before show. The whole concert on pills is a questionable pleasure.

@@alexr8817 Yeah, that wasn't the case... I don't recall Tarja saying that in the interview. And furthermore, u have to call in sick if it was true... A no-show at any job will get u fired asap.

@@sumonjamal1653 You don't make things up, but you don't write much either. There was a special chemistry in band at time. Yes, towards end Tarja stopped participating in interviews because of problems within band. But fact that she didn't come to rehearsals was never a problem at all in first era. They started to make a big deal out of Tarja's absence from rehearsals only before she was fired, and before that her absence was not a problem. Tarja had a great sense of mood of Tuomas' songs and always sang them well. During her studies in Germany, she not only did not participate in rehearsals, but even recorded vocals for album not in studio with guys, but in Germany during her studies. After that she sent record to Tuomas and everything worked out fine. Recorded album is a proof of that. Anyway, read this book.

In my opinion when Tuomas put his hands over his face it was foreshadowing his emotion of what was to come in my ranking of this song it's 3rd and has been third for almost three and a half straight years since November of 2020 to be honest it's been the same three in that time Ghost love score, Story Time , and Ever Dream but where I differ is that any song that Floor did by the other two singers is done better by Floor the only ones that even comes close by Tarja are Nemo and End of all hope

What's the point of comparing? One song sounds different and gives different emotions when listening to it. In Floor's performance this song is about Floor's great vocals, in Tarja's performance this song is a complex multi-layered compositional and poetic masterpiece with a beautiful choir.
@NightwishArena8 күн бұрын
There is nothing wrong of comparing, but it's useless of course because Floor is the singer now. That said, there shouldn't be need for any Floor fans to patrol in every Tarja reaction, just to tell how they can't stand her voice. That is hatebreeding. I usually prefer original versions (even some album versions) over the newer ones, but of course I am biased. I still mostly listen to newer versions because of the reaction videos, and I really love them too.

Are you seriously saying Tuomas would have picked a terrible singer to sing his songs (because he was the one who asked Tarja to join the band, no one else), and would have gone so far as to lie in interviews that the way she interprets his songs makes him feel like she's seeing through his soul? Tuomas' opinion >>>> your opinion since these are his songs
