I heard Nightwish in 1998 for the first time, but after seeing this video, Nightwish became what it is for me until now, and like many other fans of the band, Tarja became a goddess, a queen, we waited for every single video, every single song for me and sure and for other fans Nightwish became another world, another universe.......

When Tuomas had asked Tarja to join the band and heard her voice he said they were shocked on how dramatic and powerful it was to do folk/acoustic, and had to change it to metal and incorporate her operatic voice, and that's how Nightwish was born, from Tarja's voice, imagine if it hadn't, there wouldn't have been a Nightwish nor doors open for others. Tarja's voice was already powerful and rich at a young age, that's the Nightwish I fell in love with, it was so unique, unlike any other band and not a generic vocals. Tuomas did say that *Tarja is the best interpreter of my music and feelings* and he's spot on, she executed it beautifully, with grace and class, nothing beats the classics. Great reaction! It's not only the music, it's not only the technic in the singing..., are very important the feelings, the drama you can show to the audience. 05:34 - 05:56 this part is the example. On this video it's a lot more touching and dramatic than the album version and than whatever version from any other singer you can find od this song. Tarja's strongly closed eyes, full concentration, tight gestures, she is giving it all. They are all giving it all for sure, but what Tarja delivers is unbelievably

Thanks a lot for the reaction. Gethsemane is my favorite song and Oceanborn is one of my favorite albums. In my opinion, this is their most progressive and experimental album. Boys had short hair due to compulsory military service. Tarja said in an interview that she decided to cut her hair and get it permed shortly before the promo photos were taken, which was a shock to both the boys and herself. She admits it was a mistake she learned from. :-)

This song is a great example of why Oceanborn is on my top 2 albums with Once. I used to listen to Oceanborn a LOT as a kid growing up in the backwoods of Lapland. After starting my heavy metal journey with the likes of Stratovarius and Sentenced, Nightwish brought a new kind of magic to my world of music. Hence, Oceanborn has a really special place in my heart. For those reasons I also prefer these songs with Tarja, but I am forever grateful for having Floor join Nightwish as it made the Decades tour possible. I was finally able to hear more of those dear song from my childhood played live at the Decades show! Those feelings from the show hearing Gethsemane, Sacrament of Wilderness, Elvenpath (and even freaking Kinslayer!) are forever stored in my heart :) You really should react to the whole album (those that you haven't heard yet), it really is one of their best works. And I would recommend the originals with Tarja, as they changed the songs for the Decades tour so it's not quite the same. Maybe it's just my nostalgia kicking in, but the OG Oceanborn is perfect the way it is.

By the way, at some point you will have to react to the first ever Tarja recording, if only because of its historic value. In 1993, when Tarja was 15 years old, she and her music teacher Plamen Dimov performed 'Tonight, I celebrate my love' together in Kitee. Some backstory: since the lyrics of the song contain some references to sex, Mr. Dimov asked Tarja's dad if it was okay to perform the song. He answered that since the lyrics are in English, no-one will care one way or the other. (This is a subtlety that may be lost on native English speakers. Frank Zappa's extremely non-PC song 'Bobby Brown' was banned on the radio in the US but topped the charts in Norway where nobody paid attention to the lyrics.) Back to Tarja: soon after this recording she started studying classical singing, her voice changed and she never sounded like this again. Lista was a weekly music program where the Finnish single and album sales charts were reviewed. They showed music videos and had live guests. Times were different and this was a big opportunity for the band and they really took advantage of it. They improved really fast and one year later they looked like a real rock'n'rollers and they were already a metal phenomena in Finland. Gethsemane and other songs on Oceanborn really show what was popular metal in Finland at the time - combination of power metal and neo-classical: Stratovarius, Yngwie Malmsteen (Emppu's favorite), Helloween, Gamma Ray, Children of Bodom.

This is Nightwish's first performance on Finnish television, on main public channel Yle. “The album Oceanborn was released in early December 1998 and went straight to the charts,” says Tuomas. “Then, during the Christmas season it dropped out of the charts, but at the end of the holidays it promptly came back in, right at number twelve. I remember Katri Hämäläinen, then a publicity assistant at Spinefarm, calling the school where I was working as a teaching assistant. It was a magical moment. I said, “Number twelve? How is that possible?” In the weeks that followed, the album rose to number seven, then number six, and finally number five. I was nervous as hell.” The band's first TV gig was a baptism of fire for Jukka. “We played seven shows after the first album and another one after Oceanborn came out, and the ninth show was going to be on television.” A weekly show on Finland's TV2, Lista, features the members of Finland's Top-40 album charts, showing clips and live performances. On their first visit to television, Nightwish played the songs “Sacrament of Wilderness” and “Gethsemane” live. The band seemed to be concentrated mainly on playing, not on the show: Tuomas was looking only at his synthesizer all the time, the new bassist - Sami Vänska didn't move from his seat, and all of Emppu's choreography was in a few steps. Tarja seemed to be the calmest person in the studio, even though her appearance was a bit off again. The disheveled hair and excess mascara on her eyelashes were eye-catching, distracting from her otherwise satisfactory makeup. The performance was unforgettable for several reasons. “We played live right after Klamydia,” laughs Tuomas. “Their vocalist Vesku Jokinen came to look at us before the show. He wished us good luck and farted. I'll never forget that!” The success of the album made Pääkkönen happy. “It was released at the end of the year and hit the charts before Christmas, which was very good. After Christmas it appeared in the charts again, and if I remember correctly, it came back a few more times. In fact, if we put the album back in the stores now and launched a small advertising campaign, Oceanborn could return to the charts again.

Christians should know the garden of Gethesamane is where Jesus went to pray to his Heavenly Father the night he was taken to be crucified. He suffered an infinite atonement for every person who will have ever lived. He suffered every pain. Physical, mental and emotional. So its a very important subject and among the most important events to ever transpire. This song seems suitably epic in nature to fit. Also its the only time I have ever seen her hair in curls. #Babywish #winterstorm
