Hello Alex Anderson [ @AlexAnderson99 ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/community 🤘

Hi Alex, I live in South Florida, U.S.A. and I had never heard of Symphonic Metal before or Nightwish or of singer Floor Jansen (YAWN-sen) until Winter of 2018 when I discovered THIS performance from a youtube reactor and my mind was BLOWN!!!! Floor is Classically trained and took Opera for only a year but her range is INSANE!!! This is only the TIP of the iceberg!!! Honey you haven't seen nothing yet!!! This is a "Score". The keyboardist Tuomas (TOO-oh-mas) is the groups founder and main musical composer and writer. EACH song he composes is different from the others. They can go HEAVY and they can do Celtic/Folk Metal. Floor can sing sweet and angelic and then do death metal growls!!! She was STILL the lead singer of the metal band ReVamp when she did this tour w/ Nightwish. So she was in 2 bands at the same time until she disbanded ReVamp in 2016. After this Wacken (VAW-ken) festival in Germany in 2013 she released the album "Wild Card" w/ ReVamp in 2014 and in 2015 she released her FIRST album w/ Nightwish called "Endless Forms Most Beautiful". BOTH bands are completely different, ReVamp was more metal, heavier, in fact Floor does a lot of growling in that 2nd ReVamp CD.

Hello Nightwish Army reporting from the Netherlands. Welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish. They are from Finland. And they make Symphonic Metal. What you've heard here is just the tip of what this band can do. Nightwish really hits you in your heart. And that's what makes this band so unique. Her name is Floor Jansen and she is Dutch. There were 82,000 people there. I happily refer you to Gabriel Bardac's comment (he'll be here soon) for a list with lots of song suggestion. Watch out for the Nightwish Army. Singer Floor Jansen was at this point 10 month with the band as a temporary replacement for their singer Anette who had to drop off at the beginning of the Nightwish world tour in Denver 2012. She had just heard that she had a permanent job and was pumped to be able to perform for a crowd of more than 80.000 people, many of whom knew who she was but had never had heard her in this setting. So the audience was pumped as well and you can hear it!

At some point, if you continue, you'll hear Stargazers (with subtitles), ridiculously hard to even read, let alone sing.

Nightwish is the reference band in symphonic metal. Mastermind Tuomas says: We didn't invent the symphonic, but we took it to a new level. The double bass has been around since the 1940s, but it is typical in metal. Some manage to reach over 1000 beats per minute with the help of mechanics. But then you can also just use a drum machine. They are pirates. The song was written in 2003, when the first part of Pirates of the Caribbean was in the cinemas.

You hit on something that many other people have mentioned on other reation channel comments. You were talking about how they seem to be accessible to people who don't listen to metal. Nightwish is a very good gateway band into the metal genre. I've seen reactors on other channels go from knowing nothing about metal to loving it. I myself wasn't really that much into metal and now it's my favorite genre. My journey started with Nightwish. As far as where to go next with Nightwish? Following Gabriel's list is good. You could pick a concert and go through the entire set list in order. Ghost Love Score was 13 out of 15 at Wacken 2013. Dark Chest of Wonders is 1 of 15 at Wacken. You could also just go with what seems to be the most requested in the comments or which songs interest you based on comments. Really the only mistake is not continuing to explore their catalog. Other bands you should be checking out: Epica Unleash the Archers Spiritbox Lacuna Coil Otyken - not a metal band Bloodywood Amaranthe Ad Infinitum Jinjer Ayreon The Hu Beyond the Black Blackbriar Electric Callboy I look forward to following you journey as you continue to explore Nightwish and check out some or all of these other great bands.

Talking about Nightwish being a gateway into metal the next band I went to was Epica. Epica got me to actually kinda like the growling/screaming. Now I love it. Epica is also symphonic metal but tends to be heavier. Nightwish and Epica share many similar characteristics but have a very different sound overall.

You should even look at their song Storytime (Peter Pan, the text/subtitles) and the song/show The Greatest show on earth, it's about the birth of the earth, its evolution and goes in several chapters. It's amazing..... 👇👇👇 NIGHTWISH - The Greatest Show on Earth (with Richard Dawkins) (OFFICIAL LIVE) It's based on The book 👇👇👇 The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution is a 2009 book by British biologist Richard Dawkins, which was released on 3 September 2009 in the UK and on 22 September 2009 in the US. It sets out the evidence for biological evolution, and is Dawkins's 10th book, following his best-selling critique of religion The God Delusion (2006) and The Ancestor's Tale (2004), which traces human ancestry back to the dawn of life. Then you should look at this, it's really amazing, Floor's high note in the end is for real (a bit lower D6, but live with a microphonein the hand), the original one E6 on Broadway is prerecorded and a lay over. Floor is amazing! Look and listen to this amazing duet 👇👇 Floor Jansen & Henk Poort - Phantom Of The Opera | Beste Zangers 2019 Nightwish have had three lead singers and their all schooled sopranos.
