Yannis sure is an amazing singer, and Beast in Black is a fun band. This version is still like a demo of what he can do with his voice, and that's it. It was technically great, like an fancy new supercar model, but I still prefer my old Mustang. It was stylish like a design house, but didn't have the warmth of a Home. I liked it as it was, a demo, but I didn't like it as an interpretation of the song.

I understand why you initially were so taken aback by this performance, especially due to the singer’s particular tone. It is not that he “doesn’t sing in his real voice”, though. We all, men and women, have two equally valid vocal mechanisms: “chest voice”, or “mechanism 1” as phoniatricians call it, which is the voice part we use to speak; and the softer, more floaty “head voice” or “mechanism 2”, which is sometimes (incorrectly) called “falsetto”. This singer is using more of a head voice coordination, which is understandable as he is singing almost all the time in a VERY high range for a man. However, Floor Jansen (and every singer who goes really high) uses her head voice a lot too, but since she is a woman and her larynx didn’t grow that much when she hit puberty, her “break” between both mechanisms is a few steps higher, so she doesn’t need to use it that often in the same range; and most importantly, mechanisms 1 and 2 sound much more similar (although not equal) in tone in women that in men. When a man “changes gears” from chest to head it is sometimes very noticeable, because the timbre in men uses to be very different between both registers. That’s why sometimes he could seem to be singing in a voice that “isn’t really his”. Also, in his particular case, he has a very clear, piercing and shrill head voice, which makes a stark contrast whith his deeper and “manlier” chest voice. All that said, he is doing an OUTSTANDING job here nontheless. He is singing in a countertenor range, and sustaining very high notes even for most countertenors! (and I know this because I am a countertenor myself, although a classically trained one :P). The problem I see here is, metal style favors a very piercing, twangy, guitar-sounding voice, and that is not the most advisable way to go if a man who doesn’t have a naturally light and shrill chest voice (which seems to be the case with this singer, who has a very rich and resounding chest mechanism, not really deep but quite “manly” sounding) wants to unify his two registers. What I would advise him would be to look for a darker, rounder, more velvety head voice, and to try to make his chest voice softer and lighter; that way his “two voices” would sound much more similar to each other. But then maybe he would end up sounding like an operatic countertenor and not metal at all XD. Excuse me for all this rant, but you seem like the kind of people who appreciates this kind of things. Very honest and respectful reaction on your part, as always. I’m becoming a fan of you! Hugs from Spain!

Jennifer Madera Maybe the first two verses, but his “My fall...” in mixed voice is absurd, and I don’t know if even Floor would sound that good coming out of her typical head voice into something more forceful.

Personally I love the way his voice sounds because it doesn't sound gender specific or 'typically male' . Usually high male voices can sound to bright or screechy if you know what I mean, but I love how his voice still has that softer tone to it. And a bonus that he can still add that small growl if needed :)

"I don't know what he sounds like" much like the question of "what's his vocal range?" the answer is pretty much yes. I think there's an interview kicking around where he admits he has a 7 or 8 octave signing range. Mix that with the fact he's attending the University of Macedonia for operatic theater and he probably has one of the most flexible and versatile voices in music.

And know that I've seen it; I'm glad to tell you that like others, I saw them opening for Nightwish last year as well, and believe me or not, they were the stars that evening, making the Nightwish performance following up feeling lackluster (and I'd have never thought possible that I would say that). To me, they have the potential to be the next big thing here in Europe, because like Sabaton and Powerwolf, they can make their audience go from 0 to 100 with the first note played (and more importantly, hold that speed up until the last note played. They are unbelievably awesome live.

Many seem to have said it already, but I can't hold myself from promoting Beast in Black too. I was introduced to their first single "Blind and Frozen" and was sold almost the second it started. It has got all the elements a great song needs, and it immediately made me their fan. Yannis shows his talent in that one! Now there are two albums of total blast from BiB. I recommend "Blind and Frozen" and "Beast in Black" for heavier stuff, but when in need of ballades, "Ghost in the Rain" & "Oceandeep" will do the thing. The latter has nice parts that bring some Nightwish stuff like "Swanheart" into mind (with Troy playing a flute in Decades-tour). A reaction to Beast in Black please! :)

And i think Yannis got some advices from Floor and Nightwish and he heard the song performed live several times, becaus Beast in Black was the pre-band of Nightwish's last European Tour in 2018. I was there in Nürnberg/Germany in November. And Beast in Black did a really good job to heat the crowd before the "Kings of Melodic Metal" entered the stage. Sistah really need to start having those box of tissues at the ready, like all the time 😂😜😂. I find that Yannis sits in between Tarja and Floor very comfortably. In terms of Yannis’ natural range he’s more comfortable in part two of the song (5:35 to end) as that is his more natural range. If you wanna check anything out from beast in black may I suggest blind and frozen and born again. Also worth noting he also did a cover of Sahara by Nightwish which is also fucking incredible. Beast in black actually toured with Nightwish during the European/UK tour with the decades album. My dream would be when Nightwish promote the next album which is coming out in 2020 that beast in Black tour with them again and bring Yannis out for Ghost Love Score and duets with Floor, everybody would lose their shit and goddamn mind. I think Yannis was trying to mimic Floor a little but it is a lot of his own style there also - like most people commenting here i too saw them when beast in black toured with nightwish although i saw them in Manchester. Yannis has a crazy range in particular the high notes. Bit unfair to label him a power metal singer though - joakim brodie/bruce dickinson are prob the main 2 known power metal singers and he's not their style. As below i also recommend Blind and Frozen by beast in black - Yannis' voice is in full glory and you'll be blown away in the first 15 seconds of that song!
