Was this the first album you ever heard from Nightwish?

No, it wasn't. I believe the first album that I ever heard comletely from Nightwish was Century Child. It's still very dear album to me.

Yes. Heard maybe one or two songs from Angels Fall First but Oceanborn was really the first album for me. I listened to it all the time.

It wasn't the first album I listened to, but it is one of the best albums with so many classics!

Oceanborn has a special place in my heart. When I was young, I remember my brother getting the just released debut album "Angels Fall First". Back then I liked the first album but it didn't really make me a Nightwish fan. But when Oceanborn was released, I was immediately hooked and been a fan ever since.

I def love oceanborn. Live songs are great but it's great to listen to the studio as we can hear all the instruments clear. Hope you do Wishmaster soon. That one is also 10/10 same as this one, still power metal influences

Young people, it's hard for you to understand beauty of Swanheart song, you want energetic songs. This song is special for me, it's even different from absolute majority of Nightwish songs. Its sound has atmosphere of those long forgotten times when noble knights sang serenades under the balconies of beautiful ladies. Very beautiful, dramatic, solemn, emotional, lyrical, romantic song. One of my favorite songs in band's discography. By the way it is Tarja's favorite song on album.

For me this is not my first album.Theirfirst album was the first for me too but i like oceanborn because of the powermetal vibes.Tarja is amazing and all the old members of the band together❤The greatness of old Nightwish❤

In fact, Oceanborn is Tuomas' third favourite NW album (though that may change in September - and I say that because his favourite is Human Nature, the most recent, band his No 2 favourite is EFMB, the one before last - so you can imagine Yesterwynde being up in the top 3 when its released.). It is slso the first on which Tarja says she felt she knew properly how to use her voice

1:10:35 Moondance really shows where they are from. It's so recognizably Eastern Finland, Karelian, Russian style metal polka. I have always liked it a lot.

In 2004 i heard Nemo, from the album once as my very first NW song, and it hooked me to find out more about Nightwish, i think i heard entire Once album before any other NW song, then as i remember i heard entire Century child album, followed by Wishmaster, Ocenborn, and angels fall first.. so i became a Nightwish fan short before Tarja was fired, that was a blow of cause..

This is second album where Tuomas' army friend Esa Lehtinen played the flute. In addition to violin trio, school music teacher of Tuomas, Tarja, Jukka and Emppu, Plamen Dimov, also took part in recording of violin for album.

This album just blows my mind. Just to think about how young Tuomas and others were at that time and they already managed to play music this awesome.

Thank you, it's nice to hear and share a feeling that has remained with us fans. Times were young and events also happened, both good and bad. however, the music has survived through time. I'm one of the lucky ones who has this original OCEAN BORN CD in the basement. =) Thanks for the video and sharing the feeling, that game back.

Thanks for this reaction. I love this album. It is creative, interesting musically and fantastic vocally. The talent on display from such young artists is simply amazing. Tuomas was lucky to find a singer who could bring his crazy compositions to life the way Tarja did, both on albums and on stage. She is truly unique and those who bash her simply don't appreciate what it takes to carry these songs. Personally, I find "new era" Nightwish a lot more bland. I disagree with you regarding Swanheart: this song is pure poetry and the music and lyrics convey Tuomas' (alleged) feelings for Tarja very beautifully. Swans have a single partner in their life, and this is why it was chosen as a title/theme in my opinion (rather than for the swan song). Also, as someone who loves to sing and loves opera, I love Passion and the Opera: quite a challenge to nail the staccati. I would also disagree to some extent regarding Floor singing the Tarja era songs: for me, the songs in their "reinterpretation" simply do not have the magic of the originals. It is a completely different mood. A Franciscan friar from Canada who did many Nightwish reactions commented that, in her interpretation of Sleeping Sun, Floor invites you round a camp fire to tell you a story, whereas Tarja sings to the galaxies. That about sums it up. It's ok for people to prefer one or the other but I can see why old and new Nightwish attract (in part) completely distinct audiences. Wishmaster is the next step before Century Child. Looking forward to that reaction. It's another great album.

12:16 Oceanborn really was like a sequel to Stratovarius' Visions album which came year earlier. I believe lot of Finns who were Strato fans or liked them somewhat, jumped to Nightwish train because similar compositions. Also change from Timo Kotipelto to Tarja wasn't that big of a deal, Timo sang high all the time back then. Obviously lots of folks joined from outside the metal circles because of Tarja. Tolkki's influence on Tuomas' compositions is undeniable on Oceanborn. I think big difference between AFF and Oceanborn is also ambition - Tuomas pushed the whole band to the edge of the cliff with Oceanborn. 15:00 Tuomas writes everything in English. Translating from Finnish to English doesn't make sense at all, it just doesn't work in music. Piece you are looking for is that he reads a lot and he is also a huge crossword puzzle junkie. Very clear that he plays around with lyric choices and looks for different synonyms and sometimes ends up with words that are old or really rare.

Gethsemane is one of the best Nightwish songs, the studio version is one of the few of theirs that is better than live imo. There’s just so much there and it’s all perfectly done

ITS a wonderfull idea for you to listen these albums one by one, so I can do it whit you. I’m the one who found NW just couple yaers ago, so I’ve never really heard the albums as a whole. So this is a jerney for me. And the riff from the last song is ”stolen” from ”back Seat on a Trans am” from band called Peer Qunt. Whits is a Finnish rock band from my yought.

I will no doubt enjoy this when I get around to see it, so I already gave you a preemptive like. Oceanborn was my introduction to Nightwish back in the spring of 1999, and man, was I impressed! My first metal band was Black Sabbath in 1970 I believe (yes, I am old), but I had never heard anything close to this before. That being said, I disagree with you calling this symphonic. Some flute and violin does not make it symphonic. A classical sounding voice does not make it symphonic. A minimum requirement is to have an orchestra. There is no orchestra on Oceanborn. Even if they had wanted to, they didn't have the money. Powermetal? There are absolutely some fantastic powermetal songs here. Stargazers and The Pharaoh Sails to Orion being the top two for me. But Nightwish also has serious folk music influences, which are present to this day. Harvest anyone? Unfortunately, I listened to lot of folk in my younger years. Names like Fairport Convention, Renaissance and Fotheringay come to mind. I found the Nightwish excursions into folk underwhelming. The classical sounding voice was especially annoying here.

Stargazers, I really prefer Tarjas voice in this song. And as i have said somewhere before, peope should really listen these album versions too, there is something more when you don´t watch live version, you listen more.
