I turned a life long Pink Floyd fan, from Syd Barrett daze, into a Nightwish fan too with this performance - he made me replay it many times! IT IS A tribute - all the guys sing along at points. Check the link to this on the Pink Floyd official website! In the history of Nightwish they have perhaps never played a more fitting song for what was happening behind the scenes - "the ringing of the division bell had begun"! Emppu Vuorninen is the guitarist in Nightwish.

Emppu's last name is spelled Vuorinen. It's a variant of word "vuori" which means mountain in Finnish. (Which is funny because there are zero mountains in Finland.)

He mis the original hell sound and maybe newer can listen any version, without missing it. But all in all we don`t disagree in here. People have different preferences and sometimes they can change in time!

Nightwish doesn't try to cover by trying to reproduce or copy Pink Floyd. They do it their way. Don't listen to a Nightwish cover expecting to hear anything except Nightwish.

In the original the high hopes of the past did not come true, leading to a nostalgic feeling. In this version the high hopes were crushed completely, leading to a feeling of regret. This was in 2005 when Tarja was the singer (in fact her last concert). And yes this song was added to the concert to accommodate a dress change for Tarja.

As an old school PF fan I was dismissive of HH (and Division Bell actually) but this tribute by NW is impossible to dismiss, IMO. Cheers

Tarja would have had nothing to contribute to this song. Just wouldnt have worked. Yes her break in this, her last show. She was fired after this concert. High Hopes was about Cambridge but I see all sorts of London references in it that I can't easily relate to Cambridge (just a few miles away from me). A tribute to (not a cover of) Pink Floyd's song from The Division Bell album. For many years the performance was linked on Pink Floyd's official website as a great performance and it had Gilmour's personal endorsement. For me, this version has more energy and emotion than the original. Emppu does a superb job and Marco's vocals are astounding. A factoid or two... In the Houses of Parliament in London, when a vote is taken, it is called "a division". Members are sent to the Division Lobby where they separate into Ayes and Nays. To let everyone know that a vote has been called a bell rings in all bars and rooms throughout the premises - this is the Division Bell. Now, many MPs frequent hostelries outside the Palace of Westminster, particularly at lunch or if the House is sitting late into the night. Therefore many local hostelries have a feed of the Division Bell to their premises so that MPs who are off the premises can get back to vote. Just south of the Thames and east of Westminster Bridge is a small market street called The Cut. Several restaurants in The Cut are frequented by MPs at lunch and although I have not seen it happen (I no longer work round there) I am sure some have a feed of the Division Bell You hear "The Cut" mentioned in the lyrics of this song. A little further along the river there is Newington Causeway ("The Causeway"). Not so far from here is "Long Lane" sometimes known as Long Road but that connection is distinctly tenuous in my mind as it is straying too far from Parliament.

You came to it with preconceived notions and then damned it with faint praise. You don’t like it being different, you don’t like covers, and then, after listening to Marko giving it his all, you lament that “the female singer” didn’t sing. I was a Pink Floyd fan before you were born, and saw them several times, but this was the first Nightwish I ever heard and was blown away by their reinterpretation, which inspired me to look at everything they have done. I haven’t loved a band so much, and that is entirely on their own merit. Your response was, frankly pathetic and whiny.

I think they made a conscious decision to not use the tubular bell sound. It is such an iconic part of the Floyd version.

Well, being a Tribute, NOT a cover this is even better than the original. IMO. I bought this PF album right after it was released 1994. I´m a real fan of PF, and I´m sure Tuomas is too because he did this with his band as a Tribute for Pink Floyd. Anyway yoy reacted as you should; true opinion.

Now that you've listened Marko singing, how about reacting to another Finnish metal band. Wintersun released a new song "The Way of the Fire" a couple of weeks ago which I think is worth reacting to. It has great guitar parts by Jari Mäenpää and Teemu Mäntysaari.

It's particularly poignant that this was Tarja's last time on stage with them, as she was given 'the letter' {see ya} after the show -- "the grass was greener, the light was brighter' pointing to their 'glory days together, and they rightfully blew it out of the park

Wow. I appreciate that this was an honest reaction, but it was pretty disappointing. Marko is the best voice of his generation and he really shines, as does the whole band. As someone else said, you damned it with faint praise. Sorry you feel that way.
