This is not about politics, it's about history, biology, evolution in it's best way anybody can express it, through music, as Tuomas always does. This song together with lyrics, music and singing is one of Nightwish top songs.

I approach this song or album even in a more abstract sense and strip away all the historical, biological, evolutionary. political, religious and or environmental reasons what remains is that planet Earth was here long before us, and it will be long after we are gone. To me that is a reminder hat we should start treating the planet -- and everything that lives on it -- with the respect any visitor should or would give when they are visiting something that isn't theirs to begin with.

According to an interview with Tuomas Procession is the beginning of the whole Album. It was the first song he wrote for the album and according to him its most likely the most emotional singing of Floor he ever heard.... I can agree with it.... It is the heart of the whole album.... What will be our legacy what do we left behind once we're gone.... good or bad (we are singers of the past)? "After all we should not have appeared" This line hits every time because if you think about that were the lucky ones (Reference to "Endless Forms most beautiful" Album) who made it through the lottery of life and still humans act like assholes all around the world. We never had more wars on our planet than now. Thats why it called procession... A procession is moving in an orderly fashion as part of a ceremony....The first part of the song is a ceremony on how this planet proceeded through time till "Father Pikaia gave way to sapien". Notice how the music drastically changed with the word Sapien at this moment? Guitars coming fully in with almost anger tone to it BUT also notice how it changed again as the song proceeds yet again and the tonality gets more hopeful! As said it is a procession.... you mourn but you also share hope with something like this.

This song has a huge message. At the end you realize it's sung by whatever we evolve into in the far far future. That part really grabs me. They asked Tuomas what song he liked best when it comes to Floor's addition to it. He said that in Procession, her voice really moved him. This song may not be one to rock out to. It's all about the message. The blue - throated macaw in this video. Not long ago its cousin the blue or hyacinth macaw (the birds that were the inspiration for animated movie Rio) went extinct. Rhinos nearly extinct. There are only two white rhinos left in the world and both are female. Extinction is part of nature, but not like this. Humans are way too greedy and cause extinction. That's not nature, that's... genocide... In Human :II: Nature record hearing session for Journalists in Spring 2020 Tuomas told that Nightwish has donated a significant amount of money for the work against climate change - In practice, our donation is used to buy a forest area that is under threat of felling. Floor has sold his performance clothes and the money is directed to the same destination. Also, each member of the band donates a certain amount into the World Land Trust once a month. - We cooperate with the World Land Trust. NWSU 🤘😎🤘. Nuff Said !!!!

Procession emotionally hit Floor quite hard, discussion from Floor and Marko follows (see footer for source) Floor: And do you know what's it about? The ones talking are POST-HUMAN. We talk, *we* talk to humans as we would go back in time. We talk about the beginning of time before humans and humans come in and humans don't really understand. Yet. Until we do. And then, when everything's destroyed we go up and we look back on it all from there and that's what goes on towards the end of the song. Imperium: Trans-human, is it? Floor: Yeah, maybe. But the song also got me really bad, because I was pelted as soon as I realized what I was singing about. [chokes a bit] Marko: But is it something post-human that found us? Or is it something that came from us? Floor: I think it came from us. And the message was sent from the post-human lifeform in a different planet but to Earth. Because "We write this in a tongue you will understand". It's a communication tool. Marko: Yeah, that's the one thing that made think that is this thing totally alien? There are still some things unsolved. Floor: Yeah. "We Were There And We Will Remember Mankind." [choking back tears] "Our kin. Ages ago." So, it's a long time into the future. It's very horrible. Marko: We have the imagination, the reasoning, the logic and all the possible tools… Imperium: To sever ourselves from the NATVRE? Marko: Yes. Floor: In the most weird way. And why? Marko: But also to connect in ways that were unperceivable before. We have tools for everything. The biggest thing for us is to understand the scope of the Universe. And then on to the Multiverse to start realizing there are depths you cannot realize, but still you can imagine. And that's weird because our heads are this size and what's inside it is smaller than the head we see. And yet, we can scope billions of lightyears, imagine billions of years of history and write them into scientific facts. Source: Imperium interview with Nightwish in Finland 2020, can't link directly as comment will get auto-blocked.

Gotta appreaciate the musical wit by Tuomas to write a song about the [inevitable] procession of life on Earth, by writing a song that has no chorus. Just one continuous procession of melody. Humanity’s direct impact on the natural world is definitely a part of the whole, but I wouldn’t focus on that too much for this song. Yes we need to care for the garden if we want to consider ourselves the gardeners, but also have to remember that nothing is eternal on this planet (even if we do everything in our power to protect and preserve). Every life form that exists today will eventually cease to exist; by extinction or evolution, including humans. The second half of the lyrics frames this song as though it’s being sung by our far distant descendants remembering their human ancestors and their planet of origin that they left long ago. In the same way we look back at the evolution of life on earth (1st half of the song), the second half is from the perspective of another life form, far far down the line cosmetic timeline looking back at us. The procession of all life, through the end of this planet’s life span and beyond.

Okay - imagine yourself being an alien from the Andromeda galaxy, meeting another alien from another galaxy - and you should tell him about the life span of the long gone blue planet Earth. This could be the story you tell him - or rather - let Floor do the telling, because of the emotions - and hope, she colors her singing with. It's not political - but a story Tuomas imagineed could take place in for instance The Andromeda galaxy (his own words). And in the very short period, the human race were on Earth, we made a serious footprint, due to humanity's aggressive behavior including politics - but every lifeform are aggressive!! And yes - it's not metal like anyone expects - but it is Nightwish letting Floor do her best in storytelling. Great great song - and perfect reaction from you - you must go back a listen again - and again 👌👍🤘🤘

The song's lyrics and story invite us to imagine a voice from the future speaking to "mankind". A voice for whom we are their "kin", "aeons ago", after we have gone extinct. This should make us feel something, to consider our lives and our mortality. The video then invites us to also sympathize & empathize with other beings who are closing in on possible extinction. I find it really moving and effective. And Floor's voice is positively, heartbreakingly beautiful. Love it.

This song about the evolution of life & progression of mankind on our planet is my favorite on the new Nightwish album because of the storytelling & Floor's amazingly emotional & touching vocals. Even Tuomas said in one interview that for him Floor's vocals in this song are the most touching he's ever heard before. Being somewhat of a science geek, I'd like to interpret "we" in the lyrics as those evolved beings that have created this simulation that we humans now live in, i.e. it's science fiction for me, although many renowned scientists also believe that we live in such a simulation or even in a series of nested simulations. Another possibility to interpret "we" in the lyrics is to say that it refers to all the fossils & man made objects that have been used as proof of life's evolution and mankind's progression to what it is now, just like the broken tablet at the end of the lyrics video will be one of such objects to some post-human race after mankind is gone.

Thanks Mr.!! I grew up listening to my fathers albums which were mainly white jazz and a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll including Elvis and the Beatles. As a teenager I definitely rebelled in the first album I owned was deep purple burn. From there I branched out in the Sabbath AC/DC Judas Priest etc. then in the 80s it was the Grateful Dead and Al DiMeola, fusion jazz etc. now of course it is more of the Nordic metal bands. I still like some jazz but I’m not a big classical music fan. My wife listens to what I refer to as Jesus music, but Somerville is very very good. Thanks again!

This song was misunderstood by some, but an instant impact on me. The way it is composed, ever picking up, from a gentle "heartbeat" to the distortion marking the appearance of our dominating race... then ending on a quiet and wistful note - but not sad, 'cause as you noticed, it is not an eulogy to Earth, we are part of the eternal procession of life, and still (barely) have it in our hands to change our fate. The song is never full-out Metal, because its message does not call for it. It is a reflective track, giving full reign to Floor's most emotive tone. AND, it is home to the most interesting line of the album loaded with them: "Living lie, dead afraid"... There is often a double meaning with Tuomas, but this you could interpret at least in three ways! I will not say, which seems "the closest" to my mind. :) Btw, if SueSue is going to do her NIGHTWISH "excitement dance", I believe the next song, "Tribal" will be extremely fitting. Actually it may teach some moves! \m/

Another lovely reaction and song. I really enjoyed the instrumentation and Floor's beautiful storytelling. In all honesty I haven't thought much about the lyrics but I do get what others have said about them regarding the history of humans and what our future may be as told by our future decendants. I am with Sue Sue on this isn't necessarily about humans destroying earth as much as about saying we are part of Nature and we need to find ways to live harmoniously with nature while still advancing our civilization. I grew up in Vermont in the 70s and the nearest decent radio station was CHOM- FM in Montreal. My favorite band then was Led Zepplin but I also liked Boston, Rush, April Wine, Cars, Foreigner. In college I become a big fan of alternative and punk music while listening to WHFS in Annapolis, Maryland. Some favorites were B-52s, Blondie, REM, Psyhchedelic Furs, Gary Numan as well as more hardcore stuff like Dead Kennedys and Black Flag. Wasn't easy being a punk while a midshipmen at the Naval Academy but I found a way to merge the two that worked. Was a big fan of MTV's 120 minutes right after college. 40 years later and I have enjoyed new music that I have been exposed to over time (Jazz, Blues, New Age in California, Americana and roots music in Texas) and now because of YT, Euopean symphonic metal is now my jam.

Listening ‘carelessly’ to this track and it sounds almost monotonous. Listen carefully, with the lyrics, and it becomes incredibly profound and anything but monotonous. And Floor. Such a pure almost understated voice so well matching the song. No place here for belting, operatics, just a quiet ‘procession’.

This was the first time hearing this song as I only discovered NightWish a few months ago. I have to listen to it some more, especially since there are some good explanations here in the comments. To answer your question Wolfman; I grew up with my father playing Johan Strauss, Glenn Miller and Dave Brubeck. My 5 older sisters played the Beatles, but that was something I never got into, I preferred The Rolling Stones. The first album I bought was Deep Purple in Rock followed by Deep Purple Made in Japan. A bit later Rainbow and Pink Floyd. But also later when I got into girls ( 😜) and started dancing I listened to a lot of Soul music. Stay safe and healthy. 🇳🇱🤘🫶🌹💐

Frank, thanks again for your response. I resonate with a lot of that I was never a big Beatles fan either enjoy the stones much more because they had a bigger edge. It’s funny you mention deep purple as well because the first “Album “I got was deep purple burn. I found it on the ground in the form of a track and kept it for a number of years because I was only about 10 years old or so when I found it. We did not have an eight track anywhere in family as we were pretty poor. But as I got older and friends at cars of the tracks we played it all the time it was a great album. And I course I had deep purple live in Japan what a fantastic album. Then I branched out into Sabbath AC/DC Rush Judas Priest etc. and then in the 80s I got into the Grateful Dead early in the 80s and later on it was fusion jazz almost exclusively. Now of course I love Nightwish and all the Nordic metal bands. Also loved soul music. Played in a soul band for a while and we did the spinners parliament etc. anyway I let this go long but thanks again for your comments Frank

Tuomas’ lyrics are so introspective and personal their meaning is not always obvious. He’s also not big on explaining them…he prefers the listener draw their own conclusions and take what they need from them. To me, this song is about what our human legacy will be. If someone/something were to come to the Earth after we are gone, what story would our existence tell? I don’t think there is any political intent in the song…but unfortunately here in the USA, literally EVERYTHING seems to have to be politicized. Anyway, I think Suesue was onto something when she mentioned the procession of fossils and bones that were shown. Have a great day, and prepare to be lyrically challenged again by the next song, Tribal. 😊 oh, and to answer Wolfman’s question: when I was young, my parents had a record collection that consisted of things like Perry Como, The Lettermen, things like that. It was like living in an elevator. I remember the day I had my musical epiphany…I was 7 years old and I was watching Sesame Street. Stevie Wonder and his band performed Superstition live and I will never forget the feeling I had watching that. It was that exact moment that I realized there is a BIG difference between music and GOOD music! As you know, and have mentioned a few times, living (then) in Arkansas, it was not the most fertile ground for musical diversity, so the next big moment was in junior high and a family moved in next door. I forget where they were from, but the daughter was older than me and she had tons of records I’d never seen before…she loaned me her copy of the Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow album Rainbow Rising…another musical life changer.

Zo I saw that episode with Stevie Wonder on it! My father was very eclectic in his musical taste and we had a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll a whole Lotta jazz and some classical in his collection. But my first real influence was finding an eight track tape on the ground when I was about nine or 10 years old of deep purples burn album! That started me on my rock ‘n’ roll journey. All through the 70s it was metal and then in the 80s it was the Grateful Dead but also fusion jazz like Jean Luc Ponty, Al Dimeola etc Thank you so much for responding. I’m definitely a Nightwish fan now in my 60s and so glad that this classic sound has come back around.

This song was added to the record to support the World Land Trust fund. Nightwish is very concerned with nature conservation. The next one deals with how Tuomas perceives or perhaps conjectures how the end of life unfolds. I stared with all those bands as well. Never was a Dead fan. It doesn't matter weather it is political or religious or whatever, the fact is this planet has been populated with a wondrous amount of beautiful life forms. Then man came along. Being the most intelligent creature (supposedly) on this planet, why can't we see it is our responsibility to take care of it and not abuse it. Makes me wonder if we will be the last of a few generations to witness the diversity of wildlife. What are we doing to our home, that pale blue dot, a mote of dust in a beam of sunlight. (That image was from Voyager I, which has started sending back strange data, what is going on?) Anton Petrov: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnqYpqqDnb1mbrM Video effects, like our Mars explorers... from anothers viewpoint. Then at the end the sequence is in reverse. Last one to leave the LIBRARY, turn the light off? ("The last light in the library"). Oh, Floors' husbands' band, yes!

Typical Nightwish song? ? Respectfully disagree No chorus at all and this is about Nature not politics. Beautiful song and I love how this song changes when the Goddess sings the word SAPIEN and it sounds darker, more menacing. Great song 😊😊😊 Hail Nightwish 😇😇

@@SueSueandthewolfman Not offended at all madam. The Metal Mozart aka Tuomas wanted to be a marine biologist when he was young. The Goddess aka Floor wanted to be a biologist. Kismet 😇😇😇 Peace out and be safe

Nope, no politics in this song. Just human behavior and as a result of that our procession to termination.

Characterising human behaviour as different to the behaviour of life in general makes it political. From a materialist perspective there is no fundamental difference between a banker, a hunter-gatherer and a tree. All are struggling to perpetuate their genes and they will all be extinct eventually.
