There are two emotional points, that hit me, when i hear the song. Shoemaker said, that his biggest disappointment in life was, that he has never been to the moon. And now, he is there till the moon will be gone. No other Billionaire or Scientist got the honor to be buried on the moon, so far. The second thing is, that his colleagues of NASA made this possible for him and his family. It was also a good thing for his wife to now, that he made it to the moon at last.

Song was about Eugene Merle (Gene) Shoemaker (April 28, 1928 - July 18, 1997) was an American geologist and one of the founders of the field of planetary science. He co-discovered Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with his wife Carolyn S. Shoemaker and David H. Levy. This comet hit Jupiter in July 1994: the impact was televised around the world. Shoemaker also studied terrestrial craters, such as Barringer Meteor Crater in Arizona, and along with Edward Chao provided the first conclusive evidence of its origin as an impact crater. He was also the first director of the United States Geological Survey's Astrogeology Research Program. He was killed in a car accident while visiting an impact crater site in Australia. After his death, some of his ashes were carried to the Moon with the Lunar Prospector mission. Was troy doing the singing :-)

Good guess in the beginning, it's about Eugene Shoemaker, the only human who has part of his ashes buried on the moon. He was a planetary scientist who passed in 1997. The song is a tribute to him. The chorus is sung by Troy in the lead, Marco back on the left and Floor back on the right. The quote is read by Tuomas'wife Johanna Kurkula. The quote of Shakespeare was engraved in the capsule with the ashes of Eugene that was sent to the moon. And Floor is killing it in the last part: "Praise to the stars"

@@CUTnPASTEreacts can see your point and it’s really difficult to strike a balance, but as with the Poet & the Pendulum, the backstory is so important to understanding this particular piece. When you realise what it’s actually about, the lyrics and symbolism then makes total sense. You’ll usually get some clues of when some background is needed, when the Army leave their reaction requests. As a footnote to this, I’m sure I read somewhere that Gene Shoemaker said it was his biggest regret in life that he never got to fly to the moon as an astronaut, so what a lovely touch that he’s now buried there. Love your reactions btw

You are correct it is a homage to Eugene Shoemaker, the only human to have his ashes on the moon. The cut into little stars part is a quote from william Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet. It was etched on his urn.

Your mind works perfectly, even if (for the moment) you are blond :) Only here your refusal to do a preliminary research takes revenge. I think you already understood the reference, because already in the comments it was explained to you that it is a song dedicated to the American geologist and planetologist Eugene Shoemaker whose urn was sent to the moon (!!!), together with a quote from Shakespeare recited in the song. It is not their first song dedicated to a scientific personality, in their previous album they have a song dedicated to Carl Sagan. And if you remember, Richard Dawkins contributed directly to "The Greatest Show On Earth."

The images of the moon and asteroids were in homage to Eugene Shoemaker who as an astrophysicist studied craters and asteroids, and their relationship. He was slated to go to the moon on one of the Apollo missions but was diagnosed with cancer(I think) and got scrubbed from the mission. He always said that was one of his greatest regrets in life. He was so respected at NASA that they sent some of his ashes to the moon on a later mission after he passed. The latin operatic part at the end, "All praise be to the stars" or something close to that.

'Sup botha' ? - This is an insanely complex song - as many others have mentioned - it is about one of the final resting places of Eugene Shoemaker - he had many accomplishments in planetary sciences - including if you recall the discovery of the Shoemaker -Levy 9 comet which we saw crash into Jupiter. Some of his ashes are on the moon - he died in a car accident going to document an impact crater in Australia. The quote from Shakespeare that is on his urn containing his ashes on the moon was read by Tuomas's wife - Johanna Kurkela. The main male voice you hear on this song and a lot of the other songs on Nature is Troy with Marco doing harmonies. Tuomas, Johanna and Troy also have a side project band worth looking into called Auri. Check them out with some reactions here.

This for me speaks about the dream to go beyond what we now know. Though the surface level, the straight forward message is the homage to Mr. Shoemaker. This song for me requires that I'm in that dreaming mood, for this to hit home. This has been one of those that slowly grew on me. First listening I just found it somewhat odd: only enjoyed the bridge where there's the sound of the falling asteroid, or moon rocket or alike - likely a reference to the vessel used to take some of Mr- Shoemaker's ashes to the moon. Now it's one of my favourites on this album. There's that 'expect more' vibe - often refreshingly shaking out of the daily yoking mode. Lift the vision beyond horizon. Like God also calls this life is not all of it. The story's meant ... to be continued.

for the story of Mister Shoemaker, some of us told you in the comments below ;). But at the end "laudato si ad astra" is a tribute to the poem of Saint Francois d'Assise (maybe "Francis of Assisi" in English). Laudato si = praise be to you. Ad astra = to the stars. you can translate as: "praised be the stars". Take a look at Guylain Prince OFM 's YT channel. He did a complete analysis of the lyrics and he is a Franciscan and a priest.

'Laudato si ad astra' are latin words but not a sentence. The conjunctions do not add up. But if construed as a sentence there is a typical latin 'contextual implicit part'. In this context I would translate it: 'Praise be to you (Shoemaker, who went) to the stars.' Yes! :) The Song of creation, makes perfect sense in this context. Hi Sean, Good to see you react to another Nightwish composition :). Question: is your real name spelled: Chandradath? Just wondering :). Chandra indeed refers to the moon, or moon god/goddess, AFAIK. Originally it is Sanskrit, and goes back thousands of years :). Shoemaker is one of my favourites of the Human Nature album, and basically from the moment Floor starts singing right till the end I have goosebumps and chills :). This song is both an ode to Shoemaker and to space, space travel, the stars, and the future of humanity. I just love it. The operatic part normally brings tears to my eyes, and I made that part my new ringtone :). And maybe, as others said, maybe start doing a bit of research on Nightwish songs prior to reacting to it, it so helps the understanding, and I honestly think you may enjoy it more. Human :||: Nature (and the songs on that album actually are quite different to anything else they made, but it still clearly is a Nightwish album. And once you know what Shoemaker is about and what it stands for, it will hit you quite hard, emotionally, I am sure :). You may want to react to Music nextt, the first song of the album, as in a way that is similar. However, please do read up on it first, I urge you. BTW, Shoemaker is extremely difficult to sing with the very fast short notes and changes up and down in unexpected directions all the time. I think only Floor could have pulled that of :). Loved your reaction, it was great, regardless of not doing any research beforehand! Love, warmest regards, Wim

WOW, you weren't kidding when you said it was a long list. I can honeslty say there are alot of names that i know but haven't listened to or even names I have never heard of. Can't promise I'll react to them all,. but I will probably try to give all the ones I'm not familiar with a listen to.

Somehow you missed everything anout the song. A suggestion: there is a Napalm playlist regarding the whole album. Basically it is a sequel to the the greatest show on earth. The best contrary to what you normally do, some research is needed.

You're confused, you, don't get the picture etc., etc. And you don't want to know the backgrounds beforehand. For me that's a thin way for making a reaction. I"m off.

fair enough, but I'm not here do homework before listening to music. If I have to read about it to enjoy listening to it, I would rather just read a well written story. Me personally I listen to music to enjoy the music, I don't have to know the story of an Opera to enjoy the composition of the music. Knowing the story can increase that enjoyment but not knowing didnt detract from the enjoyment i got from just hearing it. But hey what ever works for the listner and brings them joy, I support.

@@patchouli2274 100% my friend, what works for me absolutely doesn't work for everyone. If people are good with doing the reading first before listening and that brings them enjoyment I support that 100%. What ever lets someone enjoy music gets my support, even if it doesn't fit my preffered method. ✌✌👍👍

In my opinion you were too busy trying to play detective with the lyrics. You were pausing so much to think about the meaning of words that the meaning of the music looked lost on you for this video. To me this is one of Nightwish's most beautiful songs, especially the end but it looked like it barely registered on your face. Inspecting the lyrics so closely on a first listen can take away from the emotional side of the music sometimes. Like a lot of people have said you could have done a tiny bit of research on the song. Floor has a comment right at the top of the video explaining what the song is about. 10 seconds and that little bit of research would give you enough context to know what the song is obviously about. Or I would say for the future if you don't want to do any research at all then maybe don't read the words on a first listen to or at least don't try to break them down. Food for thought. Otherwise still enjoy all your reactions and have a good day!

Btw;The words "Laudato Si" are the title and the introductory words and come from the Canticle of the Sun by Francis of Assisi, which he wrote in the 13th century.
