Although I don't like people making sweeping statements about one singer being "the best", I have no objection to people stating their preferences. I'll add mine: I prefer Tarja on some songs (including this one) and Floor on others (e.g., GLS). As with all ballads, I very much doubted David would like this one, and 9 times out of 10 that's the case. I'm always impressed with how well he can put that to one side when analysing the strong and weak points.

For me Tarja was Nightwish period! Again to me she's a once in a lifetime singer and she's one of the few singers who can reach into my heart with her voice.

Tarja was ill during this concert and her doctor advised her not to sing at all.I admire her how she sang especially the power metal songs of this concert.

This song was written by Tuomas by request from their German record company for the sun eclipse over Europe in 1999. The terms of the contract were no longer than 3 minutes, so it could be a radio hit, knowing Tuomas he made it 4 minutes + 😂

Yes. And being Tuomas and being a Finn (me too well dual US and Finn) it basically likes the darkness. You better with 20 hrs in winter. There are a number of Tarja versions including 2 vids and one with Steve ‘N Seagulls. Plus Floor gives it her own spin. Again I don’t to the Floor/Tarja thing bc each is unique and each sings to Tuomas’s arrangement and vibe.

I think this type of songs bring non metal audience to metal bands. And this one helped NW popularity in their earlier days. For me myself this was the song I heard first and brought me to NW.

Tarja IS also a great metal singer nowadays. You should sometime listen to her own songs. You'd be surprised. She has published over 10 albums over the last 20 years.

A song from the last millennium that still sounds excellent. Original Nightwish that transitioned from power metal towards symphonic metal. I miss Pharaoh sails the orion type of sound.

Believe or not but even Tuomas didn't want to do this song at first. Can't remember if it was some German guy from the Nuclear Blast that asked him to make a song about solar eclipse, or at least touch the subject. And as for you, it was little like your reaction to Ever Dream that had a slow start with Tuomas on piano and Floor only at the stage singing softly. But in usual NW way on that song they took it to 11.

This is one of those songs (for me) only Tarja can do justice. There are in fact more songs i prefer with Floor but this is one of those songs i feel no one can take away from Tarja ❤️

This is one of the songs that I could listen to both Tarja and Floor sing. Though, the pacing of the song is a bit faster with Floor, which you might like better, and she also works her hair tossing in, though I don't believe a full windmill. Floor makes it sounds more gritty. I'm not saying Tarja sings badly, but she’s strictly operatic. I like Floor's version better. But if I hear Tarja singing it, I'm not tuning out. Either way, it is a beautiful song.

Tarja was classical trained and somewhat operatic early on esp in her early and mid 20s with Baby NW. not any more. In a way it took getting g away from Tuomas to find her full voice. Maybe same for Tuomas.

I guessed that you would give a score in the 7's since I can tell when you don't like a song by your body language of jiggling not in time to the music. There are a few songs that I prefer Tarja 's signing to Floor's singing and this is one of them. I think the operatic style fits this song well and I don't like Floor's attempts at operatic style. The other song that I prefer Tarja's singing is Phantom of the Opera. Pretty much everything else I prefer Floor's version.

Hi David all respect to Tarja and her extraordinary vocals but in my mind this song is better with Floor Jansen and in order to get to in this song it's something we need to listen it few times. This is that type of song.

This was from the 2005 END OF A ERA Concert, Tarja does not know she is done but the rest of the band does, so it has a undercurrent of turmoil through it, even so, it was one of Nightwishes best performances and the knocked it out to go out on top. One of the things you did not consider is this slow balad was inserted as a "rest" in some really high energy songs , it was pacing for the whole concert instead of just on its own. This one of something like 6 Tarja dress and microphone changes in the course of the show. So that adds a bit to the showmanship.

Picking my top 5 Nightwish songs was a lot harder than I thought it would be but here I go. 1. Dead Boys Poem 2. Romanticide 3. Lantern Light 4. Ghost Love Score 5. Poet and the Pendulum To be fair there were at least 10 other songs that could be on that list but I feel fine with those choices.

Regarding stage presence and showmanship i think the rest of the band were really feeling it during this song - knowing they were going to be firing Tarja at the end of the show. I'm sure i read somewhere that Emppu in particular was struggling during this one. So I agree with you on everything that is non-personal-taste about your analysis - just thought an explanation may help with context in that regard. I would definitely recommend you react to some songs from Live Wishes to Eternity. When you reacted to Fantasmic you mentioned Tarja looked like a metal frontwoman with her attitude and swagger... there's a lot of that in this concert. I've previously recommended "Deep Silent Complete" from this show, and also (what you previously reacted to the studio version of) "Walking in the Air". A wildcard from this show is "Crimson Tide/Deep Blue Sea" which is an instrumental medley from two movie soundtracks - i recommend this one because it's just a lot of fun, with the band more or less jamming on stage while Tarja undergoes a costume change backstage.... the fun aspect you'd definitely enjoy (addictively catchy melody trade-off between Emppu and Tuomas 😊)

I knew you wouldn't like this one based on your reaction to the opening of "Ever Dream". Personally, I prefer Floor to Tarja singing this one live, but only because Tarja's accent is so strong at times. If she could remove the accent from her live performances , I would prefer her singing this one
