I think the point of the mix is to move away from a typical pop/metal mix, where the music is largely a backdrop for vocals, and towards their vision of symphonic sound, where the vocals and music are more equal and a one whole.

This is the second single of the new upcoming album Yesterwynde, which will be released 20th of september. Tuomas announced that this single will have a typical 80ies vibe which it definitely has. I hear influences clearly by Pink Floyds The Wall and Queens Night at the oprea. In the chorus right after the instrumental part and Choir I hear Agneta from ABBA in Floors voice. Story has elements of George Orwells 1984 and the video also is directing this way. Over all you need to hear it several times - like mostly in Nightwish songs - to get the full enjoyment with it. With reaction videos being the standard now on YT, its easy this happens. I experience the same thing when I hear new music always. I have to give a few tries more to even start feeling the music. I remember when I "didnt like" the intro melody on piano of the greatest show on earth haha and oh god, what a true masterpiece that is. The first reaction is only that, you dont judge a book by the synopsis. You read it, and only after that you judge. For me, that means first of all listening to it multiple times AND, as tuomas said in a past interview, listen it in context with all the rest of the album

I like your opinions because they are honest and respectful, not like other youtubers that only want to hate. Also, some Nightwish fans must understand that this is not a cult or a religion; people don't suppose to like everything they release and that's perfectly fine. I'm not going to stop following your reactions and interviews just because you didn't like "Prefume of the timeless". Having said that... I still don't get why people keep saying that the mix is bad. It's an established message within the opinions about these recent singles that doesn't have any sense. Major people can definetly hear all the elements they're using. I have noticed this opinion tents to be a suggestion problem, based on the chorus of "Perfume of the Timeless", which was already explained -- it's built that way to express the idea of multitude, many people singing at the same time. People got suggested by that, didn't separate it from the rest of the new music and that became an established message: "We can't hear Floor's voice, we can't hear Emppu, Tuomas didn't use the musician..." We Nightwish fans understand something: Nightwish songs are built from many elements. It's dificult to find a Nightwish song that isn't robust in the amount of sounds, and sometimes that could be an issue for the brain to process. It's like when you listen a Mahler symphony, even if you are use to classic music, you are going to notice it's not digestible at the first time. You've tested that when you first didn't like "Ghost Love Score" or "Harvest", and then, after a couple hearings, you got every element and your brains begun to get the melodies, armonies, instruments, messages... I have heard some stupid opinions about this (not accusing you of this), for example, the usage of the musicians. They say: "Tuomas didn't use Emppu in this song", and the instrumental parts with a complex melody for the guitar and keyboard is there. It's short, of course, but it's there. So the argument would be: "if I am not hearing a shredding solo, the guitar player wasn't used". Well, I recommend to people who think this way to watch this video from someone who understood clearly the usage of the guitar in "The Day Of...": kzbin.info/www/bejne/poK0mqegjZ6GsMU. Another important thing is that Floor is "singing low" (she is actually in the centre of her tessitura). The complexity here is the amount of notes she has to sing for every compass (which is very difficult for a singer), and it refers to the amount of ideas or messages in less than 4 minutes. As a composer, you have an approach for each song, so, in this particular case, you don't need a lot of belting because your intention is that listeners focus on the lyrics. You also have to see this in its contex: it's in a long album that expected to be 71:06 minutes length, so you dose the skills of the musicians throughout the whole piece. That's what a master composer does. If every Nightwish song would be Floor belting all the time, singing high all the time, would be boring and not healthy for her. BTW: Floor has mentioned many times that Tuomas had used her singing skills like any other composer did. He mastered something that we didn't hear very much when she was in After Forever or Revamp, and that is the combination between those strong beltings with some sweet-velvety tones that creates different sor of emotions.

Thank you for your honest opinion. I believe that Thuomas' brilliant mind cares more about conveying his ideas, his feelings and getting his message across, especially in these last albums. I also know that it's difficult to make songs like true works of art, each piece has to be unique so as not to seem repetitive. But we also know the extremely high potential of FLOOR, which for me is the best in history, just compare its performance in after forever or revamp. She has already stated that she prefers to sing high notes and that when she sings low notes she loses some of her power, just look at the incredible notes at the end of the song. But look, there was no face-to-face meeting for recording, a big mistake, Floor received the material and had to adapt her voice to each one. If it were in person there could be adjustments. Not to mention the lyrics are complicated to sing, because there are many words in a short space of time. Anyway, the band prefers to do it this way, but I still really liked it.

Just because it is not always in head voice, in the classical (operatic) style or belting, doesn't mean her voice is not utilized to its full potential. Her voice has many colours and I for one am glad of the variety. It's ok if it's not to your liking, but stating she hasn't done anything of note in Nightwish is ludicrous.

@@corienb Yeah, I think they're generally holding her back. She was impeccable on the last ReVamp album and in all of her collaborations. Even After Forever, which was a long time ago, her vocals were a lot more interesting, even though her technique wasn't as stellar as it is nowadays. Like in this song, her vocals are bland, colorless, and lacking emotion and hook. That was the case with Anette as well, her vocal work has consistently improved since her time with Nightwish. There's something about the way Tuomas writes vocal lines nowadays that just isn't interesting to me, at all. It has nothing to do with using a specific vocal style.

I like you guys but do not always agree . I remember did not like song Harvest from last album but came around to loving album. Perfume of Timeless same issue. You need to listen to it several times . it's very good but maybe need to hear more. There is a fake live version on you tube that is great. They seem to emphasize more choir work in this album. He may be to compensate for loss of Marco voice. It's working . This new song is really fantastic. Different but very catchy.

Well, I've been listening to Nightwish since their second album "Oceanborn". And as a long-time listener of this band, I can say: Nightwish is musically dead. Pay attention to the latest interviews that Floor Jansen has given. She is clearly very unhappy. Why, releasing an album and not doing a tour? The truth is that this band is no longer a band, but a company. They are trying to keep up the appearance that this "band" still exists. It's obvious. There are serious internal problems involving Mr. Tuomas's ego, Floor Jansen underutilized, Marko's absence and scoundrel businessmen.

A bit of a new way to go for Nightwish, with the children choir, having as much singing time as Floor almost i belive, Floor is doing some fast phrasing here to, something like she does in the song Shoemaker, kind off i think. The Ill starred kids of your junkyard thats us humans right, People today are getting told all kind of doomsday things, AI and war will end the world, but this song says, the end is fear, its not near, armagedon aint coming tommrow, so life your life, hide the unshot guns doomsday predictors tell is gonna blast. Also notice that Floor joins the kids choir at end and connect that to her charecter she is in video, she realize something during video, Toumas said so in a interview i watched.. I didnt read the book 1984 written by George Orwell, but the song got reference to that book i belive. At first listen i needed another listen, at 3th listen the song got me, and i started like the children choir, i actually think its a pretty good song, and something not heard like this from NW before, now i listened to the song many times! This is not a Empuu shine song, there is heavy guitar rhytm in the middle section and end, but not the big Empuu solo, but i also think this song dosent need it, because the Children choir takes spotlight instead,.. The title the day off.. is missing telling what its the day off, so i think this is where you can put in the optimistic view of the song, as a listener, if you like to, and hear the song that way, the listener decide what its the day off. The original idea was this one to be 1st single, because it was a diffrent sound from NW people told Tuomas, this have to be a single, but then Tuomas decided it should be Perfume of the timelees, and this 2nd.

my opinion on these two new singles.. mmm.. I found Perfume of the timelesss very strange at first listen. So I'm one of those people who usually decide on the first listen whether I like a song or not. and that song felt weird. however, I gave it another chance, and another. each time I found myself liking the song more. now after hundreds of listens Perfume of the Timeless is genius. It was also intended to fade Floor into the choir, as one of the ancestors. Now then this newer single, The day of.. This song is very different from any of the songs so far and that's why it's just like Nightwish. They have a habit of always doing something new and different. Even the song's lyrics sink in today. The world has the most conflicts going on since ww2, climate change is a fact, volcanoes are more active than ever in human history, new virus infections seem to pop up here and there ect. Another reason why this song jumped out as my favorite is more personal. I'm currently writing a fantasy story about a world where magic has been harnessed as an energy source (can be compared to oil) and due to overuse, that world is being destroyed.. Thank you for your reaction and for being honest. I highly value your honest opinion. I am somewhat of the belief that you will like the song as long as there are several listens below.

Everyone complaining about Floor being more in the front (the star), is exactly why Toumas put her in the background. He’s letting everyone know that no singer is the star of this band. This is his band. I’m guessing that this is an F*** you to all her obsessed fans. And, this would have sounded top notch with Annette. She has that 80’s new wave sound to her voice. Her pitch would have matched perfectly with the kid choir.

Thanks for great reaction!. Mix in this is my opinion much better than Perfume. Maybe only 1-2 short moment Floors vocal could be higher. The pharasing is quite fast so first time i dont get many words, but listening it 1-2 time more it was much better and read lyrics help much too. Floor sing only last chorus. It must be put clear that this is less and less nightwish. It is a Tuomas project because that is what appears to be. I feel that this is not being said clearly. 1st you have every right to not like something, so screw the whiny spoilt toxic fanbases. 2nd the video had a problem at first and reuploaded after. So you heard the wrong audio. 3rd Perfume of the Timeless was a beautiful track and after 5-10 listenings you will understand that it’s one of the best singles they ever made.😉 4th and last, this song is one of the 5-10 worst songs Tuomas has ever written I think. Not a bad song per se(he cannot make a bad song anyways), but not a successful experiment. Thankfully the first pre-listenings of the album are saying that this was by far the worst song of the album, which has some great great tunes.

It is done intentionally, the composer Tuomas wanted to mix the lead vocals on the same level and as a part of the choir and music to symbolise it being a part of bigger “sound of wall”. It is an Artistic choice, done from Artist perspective and opinion and not to get bigger audience to cheer for it (there are multiple interviews in KZbin/Internet of Tuomas where he explains this). After the 28 years of succeeded career NW can try out different Artistic choices and not to hunt for Radio Hits to get the food on the table. So it is OK not to like it. The rest of the songs in the new/next album probably has Lead vocals mixed in front, the “normal and accepted way”.. People tend to learn a way the music and songs should be and it is difficult to learn and accept new ways or views..

The mix is total disaster… It’s not only that the vocals are buried, the overall sound is really muddy, artificial and flat… Of course, the Tuomas fanboys will always defend every shitty Nightwish move, but this is the reality…

You do not need to like the mix...but it is like it is and Metal Mozart does not make cheap mistakes . NW is not equal to female voice screaming (in all songs)...it is much more. In here Tuomas has a message which HE wants to put out like this by using NW as his tool for it. THIS IS NOT ONLY FLOOR VOICE band - everybody should know it !!! Comparison is worthless to the first song. Normally I like your reactions but now I am disappointed ...I thought you are experienced to know NW better.

It's really ok If you dont like some song. I dont watch any channel that seems to like everything and cant admit they dont like. But If you are insulting someone's music taste by saying If you have ears you cant like this(Opeth). You cant say that your taste of music is better than someone else's... This Nightwish song leave me cold.. Some good melodies and vocals... I dont care how the mix is.. Song is just bit Boring. That's problem for me.

To me, Tuomas has a big ego and believes he is Mozart or something like that. The song is boring, it sounds like it's coming from underwater, the arrangements are chaotic, and the vocals are lost in some strange cacophony. Let some woman dump him and he'll start writing about love again, not stupid protest songs. Big disappointment.
