At 56 I thought I'd heard it all live, all the "great" bands growing up and then 2 years ago almost to the day Nightwish with Floor came along. I'd not heard of them before and my musical world was turned upside down and inside out and has been eversince. Phenomenal group of musicians all masters of their craft fronted by the best vocalist that I have ever had the pleasure and privilege to see and hear. 🙏😊👍❤️

What a song! And you both should be blown away….. I’ve got 1 thing to say. How one guy (Tuomas) can take such a traumatic event in his life and then turn all his pain and suffering into a masterpiece! To build such a masterpiece then have the talent on that stage to convey that journey to a performance like no other. Floor wasn’t around at the time of Tuomas’s making of the song. But bloody hell did she sing the crap outta that to make even that much more impactful. Why this band isn’t huge in the North American is mind blowing 😢

The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas (Keyboards) wrote this and considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying show but the band did it for the love of music and there fans . According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearsals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep depression. He even considered ending the band . He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song at the 10:00 time stamp , as to kill the pain he was going through . To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are said to him that his real mother said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band at the time of this show )were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era

@@klaymor73: That's what gets me about Poet and the Pendulum: Even after all this time since 2005, Tuomas is still affected by his own genius. Despite the empathy and depth of emotion, including despair and depression, anger and shock this song goes through, Tuomas has never forgotten it, despite claiming he has moved on from it. In all sincerity, I think if Tuomas ever has one regret in life, it is what happened between the band and Tarja back in 2005.

You should look into the story a bit deeper than just the letter. Did you know Tarja had already given notice SHE would leave the band? Touring the world, the way NW did, just was not the life Tarja wanted. Being away from home for 14 months on end and especially LIVING in a TOUR BUS got to her. They all agreed they would do TWO more albums and tours together, but Tarja would fly-in and fly-out whenever possible, so she did not have to spend so much time on that F*ing bus. But then the band found out the deal wasn't really working for them. Tarja wasn't there during promotional activities, she missed meetings (on the bus) and because commercial airplanes don't fly on demand, she often missed rehearsals. All that would have been acceptable to the band, but then the tour got extended by 4 months during a meeting, on the bus, when Tarja was not there. Tarja was furious that decision was made without her consent and she considered it to be a breach of the deal they made before. When Tarja tried to have those extra (by then sold out) concerts cancelled, that is when the band decided their goals had drifted too far apart and Tarja was not really committed to the band anymore. They decided she had to go after this tour (and not repeat the mistake for another album/tour that was initially agreed upon) So far all was reasonable, but then the band cooked up this angry letter instead of saying very mature words like: "We had a blast together, but we found out our goals drifted too far apart. We're not going to invite you for that last album. Thank you for all you have given." Because of the angry letter there was so much drama.
@isaiahwelch8066
@isaiahwelch8066 6 ай бұрын
@@vogel2280 : Wasn't just that. It was much, much more than just touring on the bus. There was also the manipulation from Tarja's husband, who was affecting the band's money. Interesting you mention the extra shows, because Tarja, to my knowledge, did agree to them. It was her husband who didn't. And it was because of his interference that essentially made Tarja choose sides -- the band or her husband -- and she chose her husband, who had absolutely 0 idea how a band operates. You wanna know why Floor and Hannes don't have those problems, that the band back then had with Tarja? Because Hannes also is a musician, and he also tours. He understands the business; Tarja's husband did not. And the whole reason Tarja claimed for not wanting to travel on the bus? Because Marko, at least, smoked back then. That was why she decided to start traveling separate. As for the extended tour, you don't get how that actually worked. It wasn't the band actually coming up with that, Nuclear Blast and booking agents did. When details were finalized, only then did the band approve of that. Plus, being a business, Tarja really had no right to complain, given the time constraints a decision had to be made in. Plus, cancelling the shows wasn't Tarja's idea, it was her husband's. Why? Because he wanted more money for fewer shows -- which again is not how Nightwish operated, as they were more concerned with how many places they could play, rather than how much money they were making. As I've said elsewhere, the Open Letter had a lot of truth to it. It wasn't cooked up like you think, as much of what was contained in it was essentially true. Because of the actions of Tarja's husband, and his interference, Tarja thought she was irreplaceable -- and said as much, given the content of the Open Letter. She acted like she was more important than anyone, when she wasn't. She was acting like a diva. And as a result, Tarja is who got Tarja fired. Because the band got tired of how she was acting. She also didn't really give the band the option of separating peacefully, which made working together on another album make no sense, no matter what kind of deal or arrangement had previously been made. As for being a breach, I think not. More than likely, it was probably verbal, and in court, I don't think the other band members would have sided with Tarja in giving witness testimony. Which means that you have at least 4 people vs 1 person, in terms of adversarial parties. Which means Tarja would have lost. And all this is something every Tarja-ite I've ever come across has failed to understand. Especially when I watched her interviews after 2005, immediately after being fired, and the only thing she was sorry for was the reputation hit she took, not for the fact that her behavior irreparably harmed her friendship with Tuomas and the other Finnish band members that were friends with her.

When Tuomas and the band fired Tarja, they didn't do it in a very good way. Instead it was done somewhat like airing their dirty laundry. A shift was happening in the band. Tarja was leaving to start her solo career and had started skipping rehearsals. This lack of committal to the band began to grate on Tuomas, who is a perfectionist. The mistake they made was the release of a public statement that essentially attacked Tarja. It was unnecessary. Her response didn't justify it and Tuomas came off looking like the idiot. A lot of his friends abandoned him, many attacked him publicly and he was driven to depression, considering suicide. This song is that representation of suicide embodied in music. Tuomas is the consummate story teller. Later, when Anette was fired, they learned a lesson - don't create a public outcry when firing someone. It was much easier for them as a band. Anyone mentioning that Tuomas was in love with Tarja is wrong - they most assuredly weren't in love. For Tarja, Nightwish was a job. It was a stepping stone to her solo career. For Tuomas, Tarja was a competent singer. He was angry at Tarja for not being professional about finishing her commitment to the band, so he fired her. He hated Tarja's husband for trying to control Nightwish. To be fair, Tarja's husband wanted what was best for Tarja - it just wasn't what was best for Nightwish. There's a VERY metal song directed at him called "Master, Passion, Greed". Marco sang that song and it took over a decade for her to speak to Marco again.

Not sure if we didn't have this song would we have Nightwish at this point. Tuomas said on FaceCulture interview "Where I literally kill myself in the song that I wouldn't have to do it in real life". Also in same interview he said that sometime he ask to cut vocals from he's earpiece while performing this song. Now watching you it felt like you were just listening/feeling music after listening lyrics this hit harder.

This song, The Poet and The Pendulum, was written and wholly composed by Tuomas, keyboard player, and was all about the dark time around when they had to fire 1st singer Tarja to leave. Tuomas and the band suffered depression over their feelings of betrayal and fan unhappiness, especially Tuomas, (1st love interest?), who was affected the most to the very point that the band, family, and friends were worried about him committing suicide. You can see in The Poet and The Pendulum that it's his journey working through that depression, those dark times. The Poet and The Pendulum was Tuomas's written suicide, instead of doing the actual act. Note when you watch it, you'll see that there's a point in the song where the lyrics say, "Now I only have 3 minutes", well exactly 3 minutes later he mimics a blade across his throat showing Tuomas's death in the song. The very last words of the song are about forgiveness, love and making a fresh start, "In the end I will always love you....The beginning". So very very hauntingly beautiful.

Along with all the masterpieces they composed, this is a masterpiece of masterpieces.

this is one of the three pieces that I consider "purging" songs. This was Tuomas way of purging his feelings about the whole drama that was going on after dismissing Tarja. While it was Marko's idea and the guys all agreed it was Tuomas who got all the angry reactions. Imagine that even the Finnish Prime Minister was asked to comment on it, that's how big of a deal this was. And the fans were angry too (hence the sentence I cannot cry cause the shoulder cries more), he had nowhere to turn but home. He needed to purge these feeling in order to go on. Therefor he committed metaphorical suicide, he killed Nightwish as we knew it till then. It's a masterpiece. While this one is about Tuomas, the other two songs purge his feelings about Tarja (Bye Bye Beautiful) and Marcello, her husband ( Master Passion Greed ). the last one being also a masterpiece in my eyes. It's pure rage made into an awesome song.

As strange as it is, Floor there are clearly Anette's songs. For example, a valkyrie makes poor femme fatale. Unlike Anette (the second singer) or evil Snow White (Anette again). And there are clearly Tarja's songs. Not that Floor lacks vocal range, but she is just different. And then there is "Planet Hell" - the official music is actually sung by Anette, and I prefer that one, though versions by all three of them can be found in KZbin. In Floor's case also one without Marko, but that is a different thing and not that impressive. Anyway, the three ladies are great in their own way and everything is about preferences, even at the level of separate songs and performances. Yes, one can compare Anette with the other two, and insist that she was not as good and was dragging the band down, but why? Take, for example the official music video of the Storytime, and other music videos of the Anette's time.

And I suggest you to listen to the demo version of "The Poet and the pendulum", written between Tarja and Anette. The singer is Marko. And listen to the lyrics, because the fact that Marko is neither a choir boy, nor a woman is not really important. After all, Tuomas could have found a boy and a woman or rewrite the fifth part (though it seems that mother played more significant role in dragging him out of the depression), but it is the difference of lyrics between demo and the final version.

And about the moment when Emppu, the guitarrist, exchanges words with Tuomas - who knows, maybe he really did not have anything to do at the moment, but even then ....Anyway it is important to remember that Emppu was also one of the founders, Marko, the singer and basist, came later, however he was there when the band parted their ways with Tarja, and Kai and Floor joined the band much later.

Guess it's not mandatory always check out the back stories for every song you're about to listen. Sometimes it's just okay to let the music do the talking when listening something for the very first time. Then you'll get another perspective, another kind of an experience when you're aware what the actual track is "meant to deliver"... 😉 As a Finn I'm still wondering from where such a 'legend' got started that the President of Finland 🇫🇮 has said anything about the "Possible" ending of the band(???) 🙄 The prime minister at the time mentioned a word or two about the situation back in the days though. It's somewhat amuzing, yet terribly disturbing at times, to read when people are spreading misinformation and to find out how easily Facts turns to Fiction on this Utuub universe and in most of the cases it happens on the comments to this particular track by them... 🙈💥😹 🤘😎 🇫🇮 💙 🎶💥💯
