Tuomas (keyboards) wrote this song during depression. Instead of killing himself in real life, he killed himself in this song. (That's the short version.)

Hello @ LFR FAMILY! Nightwish Army incoming here, your reaction just appeared on our radar.. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! That's a hard one to start the Nightwish journey.. I'll give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan: " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrulmentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " Other Nightwish songs with the current lineup of the band you may like: "Ghost Love Score" live at Wacken 2013 (epic score) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIrNep9-jKd0jNE "Ever Dream" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6iqhHR8ltd7iMk "Song Of Myself" live at Wacken 2013 (dark/metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooLYZoSgnsl7jck "Storytime" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqfOiqqFf7-ChLc "Romanticide" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKvCaIJ5eLafjtU "Dead Boy's Poem" - live Buenos Aires 2018 (soulful ballad) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWmoZH9tnMx_g68 "Ghost River" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmbImqeaYqp0bKs "My Walden" live at Wembley 2015 (celtic / folk) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZ_UlnxuZZyNors "Sleeping Sun"live at Tampere 2015 (ballad) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKTSpZ-wp56qhNk "Stargazer" live at Tampere 2015 (operatic vocals / metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJmopnSGjtKSi8k "Slaying The Dreamer" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXKXZaeglrVopJI "I Want My Tears Back" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (celtic / folk vibe) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGK4m5qlr8p8hrM "Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean" live In Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmOZo5Ksdr6EZrM "Weak Fantasy" live at Tampere 2015 (dark metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3-VZGyGl9aVoNE "7 Days To The Wolves" live at Wembley 2015 (dark metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqfWl6p3hceKjsU And if you want to hear Floor growling :) then try "Yours Is An Empty Hope" live at Wembley 2015 kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKqvpIhthphmac0 Last but not the least - they just released their 9th studio album on April 10th named "Human :||: Nature" - just take a peek to their official playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLihZ3gi5Yvzc0pfH2cbNKUUX8o3pb8eVg You can also react to Floor Jansen's performances in Beste Zangers 2019 (TV show from Netherlands), here is a playlist made by Floor herself (start listen it in reverse order..): kzbin.info/aero/PL8iSYWeQhlimgUnWw1FDdiJN0msPzqpLo Thank you! Probably the hardest one to start with... most complex, complicated song also 2nd longest. Its meant to be no fun, the matter is dead serious. Godd thing you choose the lyrics version, on this one it would be extremely hard to just try to catch them (or do without them at all).

highly doubtful, there are many other female singers with wider range. this girl mostly does opera and tries to go the highest pitch other than diversifying it. Why do you think the bassplayer sings? because Floor can't hit the pitches he can. Bands with 2 different singers do it because one singer can't do what the other can.
@ranger7544
@ranger7544 4 жыл бұрын
@@keithgraham8588 You probably never listened to more than one song, then! Floor is VERY, VERY diverse. Do your research before randomly claiming stuff you can't back up. Also Marko singing doesn't mean anything, he sometimes has his own songs/own verses & most of the time just harmonizes with Floor. Has absolutely nothing to do with pitch. P.S: Floor "mostly" doing opera, is again a baseless claim. She sings in varying styles, Tarja was the one mainly focused on opera-singing.

This song starts with "The End" and if you look up the lyrics ends with "The Beginning". The female singer is 6' 1" and 173lbs. She's married to a drummer for the band Sabaton and he's 6' 7". She's probably the primary female (soprano) singer in the world right now. BTW, the songwriter is the piano player. The song also parallels the life and death of Edgar Allen Poe who wrote novel The Pit And The Pendulum but was also written because a rift in the band when he had to fire his childhood friend, Tarja the first female singer for the band. He caught a lot of shit with hate mail because of that firing. He felt like committing suicide but wrote this song instead. Tuomas the pianist writes 95% of the songs. The lyrics probably meant he erased everything he ever wrote. Kind of erased his life.

This one is deep. Tuomas, the keyboardist/composer/songwriter, wrote this after the band's first singer, Tarja, was let go from the band. Tuomas and Tarja grew up together and Tuomas centered the band around her. Some say he was romantically interested in her. Tarja married her agent and he basically had too many demands or else. To avoid conflict, Tarja was let go. Tuomas became depressed to the point of suicide. Not only did he think the band was over or that he lost the fanbase, he also lost his lifelong friendship. His mother and father consoled him and was his last lifeline.

This song is autobiographical. Keyboardist and Founder of Nightwish, Tuomas Holopainen had to let the first singer the band had go, and was vilified by much of their fan base. Took a lot of grief and dealt with great depression contemplating suicide, but instead kills himself in this song. Here's a link that explains more: nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/The_Poet_and_the_Pendulum

Im not sure why any NW fan would recommend this song as someones first ever listen to NW lol. To say you knew nothing of the band or backstory of this "song", you did a good job on the reaction. A few of their songs are long master pieces like this. More like musical theatre than something you would rock out to. Most of their songs are shorter but still very well written and quite dramatic. They are a Symphonic Metal band. because of this they have very different sounding songs, from Heavy, to folk music, and use a wide variety of instruments. They aren't for everyone but most people can at least appreciate the talent even if the music isn't for them. Liked and ready to sub at the next NW reaction :p

You were right about one thing: this is more like play than a song. Tuomas is a poetic story teller. Every song he have ever right based on a story. And this is also a play you really have to know the backstory before you fully understand what is going on there. So I recommend you to read the sad story behind this - he lost his dear friend in this scandalous episode in 2005. Why he looked as he looked in this video is because he ever didn't want to play this song live because he didn't want to feel the pain again he felt at the times when he wrote it out himself, in deep depression - but the audience demanded them to play it. So, Tuomas often asked his buddy to mute his ear monitors that he couldn't hear the lyrics while playing it. Beautiful masterpiece! Thanks for reacting to it.

This is like diving straight into the deep end of Nightwish world. This one needs the back story of the keyboardist, Tuomas, and a really dark spot in his life. He basically writes and composes 90+% of their music. From Wacken 2013, Ghost Love Score, Storytime, Song of Myself, Romanticide (a really heavy one) are better introductions to Nightwish, all excellent songs by the way. After that from Buenos Aires in 2018 e.g. Devil and Deep Dark Ocean, Slaying the Dreamer and then slowly moving deeper into the rabbit hole with celtic vibes, soft ballads, really heavy songs, more of power metal, more proggy, more poppish and everything in between. In a few even some jazzy vibes.

Kinda surprised to see this song being the first one you would react to out of this band. Nightwish has some challenging songs with sounds that don't fit together unless you understand what they are trying to tell you. This is a symphonic metal band that has a wide variety of sounds but to explain it very simply it's like melodic metal meets movie scores.

Welcome to your first stop of a long, surprising always awesome Nightwish journey. I hope you enjoyed your first Floorgasm :-) My personal suggestion for the next songs in order to give you a nice overview of some "styles" covered by Nightwish: -> Ghost Love Score (Wacken 2013): THE "traditional first song" to get into Nightwish. Floor is showing diferent capabilities and you can get a first understanding of Tuomas capability of songwriting -> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast -> There are a couple of great songs from Wacken: Storytime, Song of Myself, Romanticide, Last Ride of the Day, Ghostriver -> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look at the growls) -> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) and "The Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley - get to know the background of this song ahead) -> Then the new stuff with "Noise" (Video), „Shoemaker“, "Harvest (Lyric Video) ... Just my personal thoughts :-) One thing you can definitely be sure of: Every song is different, has some surprising transitions, is intense. And none of the songs you're going to discover will disappoint you. Greetings from Hannover in Germany

This song is for the full song about Tuomas (the keyboarder, songwriter, mastermind and "The Poet") himself and his depression he had after firing Tarja, the first singer of Nightwish. He said he had the choice to commit suicide in real or within a song. Luckily he decided for the second option. After his death by the pendulum it wents dark and you can only hear his fading heartbeat. Always gives me shivers. That's why all the others have an eye on him, as this song is so emotional for him. He had his in ears turned off during the spoken passages. The song starts with the end.

I'm a massive metal fan (heavier the better) and can see why you say a lot of fans you could see at comic con and you are kind of right. This band is very good live and the theatrical show they put on draws heavier listening metal fans to their shows but not many of them have the albums (studio versions) from what I know of. Keep reacting to metal and rock it's a never ending journey in which I think you'll really enjoy! Stay safe in these crazy times guys

Love it when there’s more than one reactor. Good job. Don’t worry about comments regarding Tuomas on the keyboard. You didn’t know the back story. Usually reactors see Poet after they fall farther down the Nightwish rabbit hole and are encouraged to research it first. It was very interesting watching you without you knowing what the song is about. Floor Jansen is the Nightwish Army’s Valkyrie and yes, she does work out. She’s is a 6’1”, 4-octave soprano and has one of the best and most versatile voices on the planet. She can and does sing any style. They’re my favorite band and I hope you do a few more songs. If you want to do some head-banging try Romanticide from the Wacken 2013 concert with 82,000 fans present. This concert is singled out a lot because the songs are great and the audio and video are excellent. Ronanticide: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKvCaIJ5eLafjtU

Guys...🖐 the Poet and the Pendulum 🤘 As a first.....ow boy! This is imo their best song, the backstory, the lyrics, the music 👌😎 There are 3 great songs...dare i say epic? This one, Ghost love Score and the Greatest show on Earth. Normally i would say do Ghost Love Score 1st. After that do some other songs like Storytime, Romanticide, Song of myself, Yours is a empty hope or 7 Days to the Wolves 😋 evt. some other songs and then go for The Poet and the Greatest show....they both need some homestudy...just some. To know what the songs are about. Nightwish has 9 studioalbums and are at their best live! Wacken 13 (a must watch, pick a song any song and you are in for a treat) London 15 (which this song is from) Tampere 15 or Buenos Aires 18 👌🤘 Comic con???? What...never been there, probably never will be! Ehm Beyonce.....🤔 yeah she is Good but Floor Jansen 6ft 1 is something else, she is our Valkyrie our Angel of music! She has a range that is fingerlicking 4 octaves someone mentioned. She does lows (growls) and with no problem goes high D6 (for 8-10 sec)is the highest i know and me thinks on the new album she even goes higher. If you want you can check out Beste Zangers 2019 a dutch tv show with singers doing their stuff, not a competition btw. Floor sings songs there in German, Spanish, Dutch and English. She does a lovely version of Shallow 😘 and then there is The Phantom of the Opera..ow boy..she sings this with Henk Poort (Mr Phantom in the Netherlands)...let me say it this way..all the other versions are ruined for me...it is That Good! 😎 Well hey Thnx for this! As stated this is a awesome band and if you choose to go on this journey, you will be in for a Epic ride. Have Fun and Enjoy it All! ...🖐

Good observation regarding the guy on the keyboard. He is Tuomas, who this song is about. It is difficult for him to perform because It is about his near suicide after the split with the bands first vocalist, Tarja. I’m sure you guys will soon find out that Nightwish fans are passionate and there was a lot of anger directed toward him afterwards. This song is about that grieving process and coming through to the other side. It is one of Nightwish’s darker songs. If you want to revisit Nightwish Storytime live at Wacken is a bit more upbeat. How is the Heart, from the new album is more commercial sounding and has a very inspirational message during this time of COVID.

Very dark&beautiful song about the keyboard player Tuomas Holopolainen, the main songwriter of Nightwish, struggling with his inner deamons (i.e. bad depression) and finding out of it with the tools he has - making song of it. IMHO one of the most poetic and beautiful songs ever made. Thankfully we still have Tuomas with us and making more music.

I'm just starting the video, so don't know if you touched on this, but this is a hightly personal son for Tuomas, the keyboardist and writer of the song and most if not all of Nightwish's songs. This was written after the band parted ways with their original singer, Tarja. It was contentious to say the least and there was a lot of flack thrown around. It's about as personal as a song can be. Edit:Don't think of necessarily Floor singing the song, but Tuomas expressing himself though the band as a whole. I believe this is him, symbolically committing suicide. I think this is very hard for him to perform and band members have been seen checking on him mid performance.

He writes most of the songs but not all of them. Marko is also a good songwriter. However, all of them play/participate in other projects so they pick which songs to do as Nightwish and which to do elsewhere. Marko often sings with the band Delain as well as his own band. Tuomas and Troy perform in Auri with Tuomas' wife Johanna as the third member. Emppu appears with Brother Firetribe though I haven't seen anything recent from them. Floor pops up in several places; Beste Zangers, Northward, guest with Epica, guest with Kamelot... Kai is also very versatile. He was previously the drummer for Wintersun.

You`d be surprised who actually shows up to theyr concerts,and even more,what theyr fanbase is. Its everything from pure classical opera lovers,pop,rock,hiphop....you name it. People gets introduced to Nightwish especially after Floor joined,and they are HOOKED. Whenever you check out songs they did at Wacken 2013,you will even see some of the darker brothers in the crowd clinching theyr fists,and pumping it to the beat. There is no real stereotype Nightwish fanboy or fangirl,they come all shapes,sizes,colours etc. The confusion seems real amongst all 3 of you,and im not surprised. You dove right into that 1 song about depression,suicidal thoughts and anger from a piece of history for this band. As someone else mentioned,you should have been introduced to some of theyr other songs first,so you would get to know them more. Understand the history behind the band and such. This is wild territory for anyone who hasnt the slightest idea on what deep depression is,even worse when you cant imagine why the lyrics are so dark in the first place. Basically childhood friends that all of a sudden got torn away from eachother,by greed and what not....some third party jackass who had left all his morales in the gutter,and Tuomas got the blame for it all over an extent of time,both from media and from many of the diehard fans. He then developed depression,and things allmost took a turn for the worst,but luckily.....he wrote his own suicide instead of taking his life,turned it into a masterpiece about/around mental health. Theyr other songs are much less "confusing",you got alot of good stuff ahead of you! ;) 16:07 Needless to say,this was Tuomas`s own song about his own biggest battle in life at that point,a song that really hurt him to perform. And that upcoming part Mother and Father had him actually sing along for the first time,because that is the exact words his mom told him,comforted him with. That made him realize,he had to get his sh*t together,as well as get help instead of taking "the easy way" out. Thats also why Floor is checking on him from time to another during this song,and Marco & Emppu walks over to him at the end,to show him "we are here for you,brother!". Marco especially has a few really concerned looks over at Tuomas,before he walks over with Emppu. They all know this song means alot to Tuomas,and is really difficult for him to perform. Tuomas is at a much happier,healthier place theese days...thats also why he never wants to play this song live anymore. No point in ripping up old wounds so to speak.

Love Nightwish. This band has the greatest philosophical, poetic lyrics you will ever hear. "1000 pages of erased text" I think eludes to a life unlived. The pen and paper represent the rest of his life and the "erased text" are the pages that were never written because of his death. By the way the guy behind the keyboard (the unhappy one) is the guy that writes all of the music and lyrics for this band. He is the Tuomas (his real name) that they mention in the Erased Text part of the song.

The Poet and the Pendulum is the first song in Nightwish's 6th Album, Dark Passion Play. This song is one of Tuomas' most personal songs, dealing with Tarja Turunen leaving the band and his feelings of it. The song at its time was the longest Nightwish song in duration,and is now the second longest song only to The Greatest Show on Earth. Clocking at around 14 minutes. The song is divided into 5 sections, each with different themes and styles being applied: White Lands of Empathica, Home, Pacific, Dark Passion Play, and Mother and Father. There is a demo version by Marco Hietala, with even darker lyrics.

at the end when all the guys surround Thuomas (keyboardist) it symbolizes that they supported him and Nightwish would go on even after Tarja was fired from the band. A heavy song with lots of meaning. Keyboardist is the composer of almost all of Nightwish's songs. I've heard him called the 'Metal Mozart' and it fits him pretty good. Incredible talent. Floor (singer) is a incredible fit for the band

1000 pages of erased text. The things he felt and experienced in his life but could not share. 1000 pages filled with the emptiness he felt. He died with a smile on his gave because those pages were filled with the nothing he felt. And he has shared them with the world. In a convoluted way he Is showing everything he is by sharing the nothing the now experiences with his final work of 1000 pages filled with nothing. And he is at peace with himself now.

Guy Elliott from St Mary's Reigate Choir School is the boy soprano at the start. The title is a reference to Edgar Allen Poe's "The Pit and The Pendulum". Floor is a Valkyrie/Angel/Siren/Goddess - 6 ft 1 in before she puts on the 4 in heels! (and the lead/rythmn guitarist, Emppu, is only 5 ft 3 in!) ... Live! NO AUTOTUNE!... They have a whole catalog of different types of songs - very interesting, talented, and creative band. Please check out more :) For a little clarity: Usually people are not suggested to watch this song until they get to know the band more. This was an incredibly personal & emotional production from the main writer for the band (keyboardist Toumas) after the band decided to remove the original singer, after years together; he was feeling suicidal, When fans, friends, and even his government who loved her turned on them. Rather than killing himself he wrote this to die in song instead of real life; these are his thoughts and impressions through it all. The last part was what his parents said to him to help him get through it all. Fans are really protective of him, the band and this song.

This was written right after the band decided to fire their original singer, the highly celebrated Tarja Turunen. Many fans turned away from the band and most people blamed Tuomas as the leader and main composer/lyricist of the band even though the decision was made by the entire band. Their second singer, Anette wasn't really liked by many. So Tuomas got a huge amount of hatred he even thought of ending the band. So in his own words "In this song I killed myself so I didn't have to do it in real life". This is their third and in my opinion best lead singer, Floor Jansen, a dutch woman who joined them during an American tour when Anette fell ill and was hospitalized. Since her relationship with the band was deteriorating fast anyway, the band decided to let her go. Floor had only 2 days to learn the entire setlist of 15 songs.

actually, the decision to dismiss her was not the cause of the vast backlash..it was the ugly way in which they did it that was the main culprit, since , seemingly, everyone knew Tarja to be the opposite of the terms used to describe her in the letter
