Very good and ampel reaction, love your frisky style 🙂 in 2009 Tarja released a single with the title "Enough" that is considered to be a reaction on this and other songs by Tuomas related to the breakup. Ego selfish primadonna Dancing in your poisoned cage Thinking that your conscience's clearer If you drink your dreams away Feed your anger to the devil In your self built wishing well Take a swim in muddy waters All the dirt will leave a trail Had enough symphonies of sorrow The beasts of prey a breath away Masterpiece of treachery Build a wall and make me crumble Just because I am in love Don't you cry now look at all the Dolls and toys that you have got Smashed the mirror of perversion With the dagger that you made Mirror, mirror, is there someone Who can make your day today? Had enough symphonies of sorrow The beasts of prey a breath away I've had enough symphonies of sorrow Beasts of prey one breath away Masterpiece of treachery Kept my thoughts buried in a box With each shot I still kept it locked You drew a play written with my blood Went ahead just to feed the lot I've had enough symphonies of sorrow The beasts of prey a breath away I've had enough symphonies of agony Beasts of prey one breath away Masterpiece of treachery If you stil like the Phantom, please do the official version by Nightwish featuring Henk Poort in Amsterdam November 2022

Toumas at 1:07:12 gets me every time as does Floor, always. 14 months ago a dear friend pestered me in to listening to this masterpiece from Wembley. Eventually I relented having not previously heard of either Nightwish or Floor. My expectations weren't great for a number of reasons, primarily I had preconceived ideas about metal but not really understanding the symphonic element but how wrong was I. I was blown away and have been ever since owing my friend a huge debt of gratitude. Thank you John for the wonderful backstory that fuelled this equally wonderful reaction from you Maggie and to Sammy for sponsoring. Paul 🙏😊👍❤️

We were a band, yet she did not practice with them, travel with them, or talk with them in a year?? Really how can you think that would work long term? Tarja is an amazing singer, with or without Nightwish, the band is amazing with or without Tarja. I believe the break was for the best for both, the band and Tarja.
@nebucamv5524 Жыл бұрын
Keep in mind the guys had ignored her for years. She tried to communicate with them but they didn't listen. They didn't even want to have her in the studio or in the creative process. When in the year 2000 she was attacked on stage by someone in the audience she understandably ran off the stage. She was very frightened, of course. But you know what? The guys didn't care. They went on playing as if nothing had happened. The only person caring for her was Marcelo - whom she had only known for not even a week. Tuomas has never been a close friend of Tarja. He never visited her or invited her to his home.
@tamitami9275 Жыл бұрын
@@nebucamv5524 I think breaking from each other was a good thing. Tarja is now the main attraction, as she should be. Nightwish is a band, Tarja should of always been on her own, with a back up band, so she is the showcase.

Another thing about Floor being offered the permanent lead singer for Nightwish, she and Tarja are friends although not really close. However, when she was made that offer, she immediately called Tarja and basically asked if it was alright with Tarja if she became the Nightwish lead singer. Tarja said she didn't really care anything about Nightwish anymore and she had her permission to sing with them. BTW, Floor recently opened a concert for Metallica and slayed it. She got a standing ovation when she walked off. She has quite the belly already pregnant with her second child.

Only floor could do the justice this song needs. And yes, Thomas has said they will no longer play this in the nightwish set. Can't really blame him. Mad love for the band checking on him during the song. Even floor, who is an empath, looks to him during the song. She wanted to do the best singing for his most personal song. And I'd say she did .

There's nothing but KZbin hyped comments about Emppu and Marko checking on Tuomas during the song. We have no idea what they are talking about. It's as if he is made of porcelain. I have never heard anyone in the band talking about special support for Tuomas. That doesn't mean it's not true. We just don't know. If anyone have a source for this please let me know. I don't mind being wrong as long as it is the truth. What is true though is that Tuomas (his own words from an interview) sometimes, not always, asked the sound guys to turn off the vocals in his inears because it brought him back to that emotional state he was in when he wrote it. He has also said that he is way past that and isn't the same person anymore.

I'm glad you cut this into a separate video. I've been a fan of Nightwish since 1998. I never got to see them with Tarja in the band. What people may not consider even to this day is the reason Nightwish released this public letter. When you work with someone who starts to change into a personality that becomes obsessed with the image and and the notoriety, they may want to change the public perception of anyone who disagrees with them... so you tend to be agreeable with them most of the time. I am sure we've all seen this in the media. In order for them to maintain a career and move forward as a band they actually had to release this open letter of her firing so that she could not have the opportunity to taint the situation to the public. Remember, everyone's first impression would be the hardest to change, so they ultimately had to request that she read it the next day so they could prepare. Knowing there would be backlash, they still decided to maintain the truth of what happened while still showing that they respect her as a human being and how difficult it was for them. Imagine being in a successful band with someone who starts to act like this for a couple years, right? You don't think they'll change back any time soon, so you have to make hard decisions. Some of them were allowing her to have her way, but once it becomes so toxic that everyone feels uncomfortable, something has to be done. She became a better person, I think, having been fired. It taught her some humility. She since has used her Nightwish status to carry her solo career, but she has been more candid in communicating with her fans and thanking them for their support. I don't think she was ever unappreciative, but her obsession with always having things perfect took over her sense of reality. Tuomas was attacked from all sides, and had to put the band on hiatus until he was okay to develop new music. I've had something similar happen, but it was on a local level. I lost 2 friends out of the band splitting. It was really hard for me to work though and I can absolutely relate to having to say goodbye to someone I considered a good friend. Anyone who composes music with this much depth and intensity is going to feel severely about this sort of thing. I think we're all very fortunate that Tuomas decided to carry on and put his grief into his music. Dark Passion Play was the most amazing album I heard to date when it was released. I'm happy it's all behind us, because Nightwish found the greatest vocalist for their music in the world in Floor. I don't think any would disagree.

Nonsense. As someone who first followed them as a 13 YO in Finland (2000) and lived end of an era at 18, the blame Tarja thing is wrong and sexist. The band naturally was changing The giys wanted heavier metal sound and less gothic love. Tarja got married and wanted to try other genres. Everyone knew the band was taking a year break and doing their own things while Tuomas wrote. And that album6 would likely be the last for this lineup.They talked abt it in interviews as early as 04. Tuomas wanted a quick one day story and created a massive PR failure. Noone to blame. But handled poorly. This song is Tuomas feelong sorry. Bye Bye Beautiful os the diss. Neither song is now performed. T&T was the heart and soul of NW for 10 yrs. Now Floor fits the newer sound. No need for fans to diss one for the other.

Great reaction to a great song. I truly believe that Tuomas wrote this song with Floor's voice in his mind. As far as I recall Floor was a candidate for Tarja's successor but Floor was still committed to After Forever. But when you compare the album version with Anette Olzon as singer with the Wembley 2015 performance, it's so incredibly clear this song was meant to be brought to perfection by Floor's vocal power, range, and precision. One hundred percent.

The band was founded by Tuomas and JUKA, who brought in Emppu, to be basicaly a Blackmore's Night type of band. And THEN they searched for a vocalist. Tuomas remembered Tarja from school, where they did a school band together and asked her. But he didn't see her for two years (he spend in the army) and had no idea she started her clasical training and how much stronger her voice got. So then they started to build their sound around her voice into metal. It's all in their documentary... All that says she wasn't realy that much of a close friend at the begining (he would have known about her vocal studies if she did). Some fans want this to be super sad love triangle but I don't think he loved her, she WAS a friend nontheless and all that still must have hurt like crazy. Also, lets accept Tuomas is super proud of his creation and it's not wrong to be angry when he basicaly made Tarja a superstar and she started to diva out like she didn't need them.

My husband and I were in the army with a man who had been a Nightwish bodyguard. He said that Tarja’s husband had had a bad influence on her, pushing her to go solo and convincing her she was the star and that the band was nothing without her. It was really her husband they wanted away from but in order to do that they had to cut ties with her. He said they were all devastated by it and probably wouldn’t have made the letter open but they were afraid of what her husband would tell the press and wanted to get a jump on it. Hopefully, everyone involved is happy and at peace with it all now. BTW, Stargazer is a great song to hear Floor’s more operatic voice.

While the open letters were not the best way to deal with things, it does mean that the fans could see why and what the band were feeling, it was a shame that it all happened but keeping it hidden could have been worse for everybody, Tuomas got a lot of hatred for it which I think is unfair especially as it could be seen that the gap between the band and Tarja had grown to a point where there was no easy solution for anybody. I think The Poet is one of the best songs Tuomas has written yet about such a bad time for the band.

Floor has an imaculate sense of judgment with regards to tone, color, style, emotional infliction and emphasis in the songs to best convey a certain feeling in specific sentences and such. Like she becomes the character, entity or emotion. In this case Thuomas, his inner voice and his mother speaking to for him and to him like an extention of. Enhancing the immersion and elevating the song and performance. Truely a god-tier vocalist! And the song is the definition of a masterpiece, an artful masterpiece, a poetic masterpiece.

Betray Tarja? No, it was Tarja who betrayed Nightwish with Diva-like behaviour, disloyalty and lack of appreciation for the rest of the band and the fans. Her husband was also a problem, being apparently greedy and selfish on Tarja's behalf. They DID work well together, but it was off the stage that the problems were. Its all in the past now. Tuomas was deeply upset at the time (the video shows him sat alone with his head in his hands before the concert), but has since said he's not that person anymore. Marco and Tarja never hated each other. Incidentally, Marco has appeared with Tarja this year, and on other occasions since the split.

@@TheRealRedAce sorry, but saying it's a 'fact' that Tarja was a diva is a load of bs. What a joke. Where is your concrete proof of that? What about the behaviour of the guys, including the fact that Tarja was assaulted by a fan on stage and they just carried on playing and did NOTHING to help her - that speaks volumes about them as people. I don't think Tarja was a diva, but by god I wouldn't blame her for becoming one with such caring and kind bandmates as that.

@@luxetveritas9196 I never said it was a fact. But it was. Have you seen the End of an Era tour video? Also there are Tarja's own witnessed statements regarding the band before she was fired. Then there was her treatment of the fans by cancelling several concerts at the last minute without good reason. There was also her refusal to rehearse the songs. As for the onstage assault (which wasn't really an assault, but just an overenthusiastic fan) its likely the band were unaware of it at first. In any case its security's job to deal with that sort of thing - and security DID deal with it.

A TINY addon to the backlash,it also came from parts of the media as Nightwish is like royalty over there,Nightwish is probably that one thing they are most proud of. Also a sidenote i always feel like mentioning: Floor towards the end tears up wich you can hear in her "Thank You" at the very end,but you can see her rapid winking just before that,AND at one point you see her looking over at Tuomas as she has finished her vocal parts. She cant really storm on over to him,BUT knowing Floor im sure she would make her way over there anyway,if she saw him struggling. Markos part was specificly written for him,as Tuomas knew he had some anger he wanted to air out,and Marko BROUGHT IT 100%! Marko also goes insane on Master Passion Greed wich is theyr kick towards Marcelo,who they all look upon as the guy that poisoned Tarjas mind. I somewhat believe that most of the things we saw coming from Tarjas side,was basically Marcelo "directing it". I did not believe the guys at first,when i heard that they fired her,i as a former victim of bullying,i sided with the woman that got attacked by 4. But then i got to read the letter,i withnessed the anger Marko had towards Tarja at one point,i withnessed the hatred in his voice on Master Passion Greed (it only has a audio upload on YT but worthy a listen),and theyr sarcastic and harsh message to Tarja in Bye Bye Beautiful with Anette Olzon in as a replacement. It is possibly the music video with the most amount of views in Metal music! Currently at over 145 million views! Im a metalhead,and i have not seen any official music video in the metal genre,with this amount of views. I hardly see it in rock music! Speaking of Floor tearing up (channeling Tuomases mom,wich brings me to tears every time) 1:08:45 You can clearly tell that shes struggling as she has admitted several times that shes really easily touched,and very emphatic as a person. 1:09:24 her looking over on Tuomas a final time,being surrounded by Marko and Emppu,she waited until her demanding last part was done,so she wouldnt mess it up,as she had enough with fighting back the tears already as it was. Shows her insane strength to me! Only song that keeps breaking her when she tries to perform it live,is her own written song to her mom,called "Strong". Wich she wrote as a teenager i believe in her first band After Forever. There is one good cellphone recording of a really young Floor actually managing to perform this song the best i think she has ever been able to sing it. Its called: After Forever Strong uploaded by MC SharQ 14 years ago. Floors mom has several things that has bothered her over the years,but the main thing being rheumatism. Have you seen Emma Heesters picking that song to song to Floor,because she has a mom that survived breat cancer? Emma Heesters sings Strong for Floor Jansen (2019) (with subtitles)

I think..... they were all correct. Ultimately, it came down to priorities. Tuomas & crew felt it necessary to get ahead of possible criticism, & make it all public. They (Tarja, & the rest, ) just disagreed [Dave Mason reaction? /Hint ;)] . Don't think WE can really judge, definitively. Ultimately, it resulted in a beautiful piece of work. :) Still love both Nightwish & Tarja. :)

Tarja was pushed before she jumped anyway. It was the past and the now is as good as ever if not better for everyone. Guy Elliott is the boy soprano at the start. The part "Sparkle my scenery..." was originally sung by another boy soprano but Floor and Tuomas agreed that she could do it for Wembley Arena. For more on the "Tarja thing" watch Nightwish "Bye Bye Beautiful" and listen to "Master Passion Greed" - with this forming the "Tarja trilogy" - more Marko in the latter!

Maggie, what you must understand is that Tuomas prefers to show his emotions to his world through his songs and music, via Nightwish. However, with Tarja and what happened, even Tuomas became so depressed he wanted the pain to end -- even, for a time, ending things permanently by taking his own life. After the Open Letter was made public, it got so bad, and divided the fanbase so harshly, that even the PM of Finland got involved. It was at that point, from what I understand, that Tuomas had had enough, and went home to Kitee, and to his parents (Tuomas has since then, in the last couple of years, lost his father). It was during these "quiet times" that he put his emotion into music -- writing both Poet and the Pendulum, as well as Master Passion Greed, arguably Nightwish's heaviest and most aggressive song. However, because I know what depression is like, I empathize with Tuomas from back then. I know what it feels like to think everyone is against you, that nobody cares. To feel as if the only way to end the pain, is to end one's life. Thankfully, Tuomas did not do so. He was able to use music as a catharsis for his pain, and was able to process it and move on from it, acknowledging what part it played at that time in his life. Because we now know that without Tuomas, we wouldn't have this genius music he has created, and we wouldn't have Floor to sing it. We wouldn't have this perfect imperfection of human expression, which feels as if we see ourselves through shattered pieces of a broken mirror. Because even Tuomas is human -- a fact he acknowledges very much. Whether it is the stories we tell, the pointless stuff we do, the things we should pay attention to and don't, or the warnings we should heed, and don't -- all of it is part and parcel of the human existence. And the most amazing thing is this, that Dr. Carl Sagan once wrote: "Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam." ~ Dr. Carl Sagan, _Pale Blue Dot_ Edit: That being said, Maggie, the way Tarja handled things does not excuse nor change the fact that Tarja is who got Tarja fired. Nobody else was doing what she was doing at that time in Nightwish. And I have no doubt as to the validity of the way Marcelo changed her attitude and demeanor. Because of all the times I have ever conversated with other people about this, especially those who still, even now, hold a grudge against Tuomas for this, I have asked them: What reason would Tuomas, Empuu, Jukka, and Marco have to lie? Especially with a public "open letter"? There is no reason to lie -- because when you have 4 people agreeing to the same thing, then that becomes a conspiracy. And it also isn't hearsay, given that each one of the band members knew about this, saw it happening -- and were witnesses to it. Which means that they had first-hand knowledge about it. Thus, Tarja had no leg to stand on back then. It was her own fault for letting her husband, Marcelo, influence her the way he did, to the point it drove the other members say, "Yeah, we wish we could work this out, but that's not going to happen. You have damaged our relationship with you to the point that we no longer feel comfortable in this arrangement. So you are no longer needed for this band to function." And I agree: Tuomas wrote a termination letter as deep as his music. He could have just said she was out in a press statement and left it at that, and facing the inevitable backlash as a consequence regardless. The Open Letter really was a way to try and mitigate the anger Tuomas saw coming; whether it was the right course of action, even I don't know. But what I will say is that I watched Tarja's press conference, and I will say, she wasn't at all sorry about what the Open Letter stated. She never addressed those things. What she was sorry about was losing the prestige of being Nightwish's lead vocalist, as she had been attempting to use that to bolster her own career. And perhaps in a bit of irony, Floor's solo career is doing what Tarja's never could: Living in harmony with Nightwish, as Floor lives in harmony with her hubby Hannes, as the drummer for Sabaton. I mean, what else can you say about Floor opening up for Metallica, in place of Five Finger Death Punch? Lol

this song has nothing to do with how Tuomas felt about Tarja or her being fired by the band, it is only about his state of mind in dealing with the media & fan onslaught against him afterwards and how he processed that.
@isaiahwelch8066 Жыл бұрын
Not true. If you think that, then you do not understand the meaning of the lyrics, especially in the beginning, particularly about "having two faces/one for the world, one for God, save me" or the lyric "I cannot die/I, a whore for the cold world." These lyrics are very much a part of how things previous to the events that led to Tarja's firing had as much influence, and as much to do, as Tarja's actions did. Whether you like it or not, we are a sum total of not only our biology, but also our experiences in life, and how the former affects the latter. Because you can't say Poet and the Pendulum had nothing to do with, at minimum, Tarja's firing, when it was a direct catalyst for the creation of the song. It literally is why the Open Letter was written, and the direct reason the backlash happened -- and why Tuomas became so depressed he wrote this song. It is not at all proper to say that the chain of events that transpired before this song was written had absolutely nothing to do with the song being written. Such thinking is illogical, especially when the lyrics themselves, in the beginning, are exactly about what happened with Tarja and her firing. Even the titles of the beginning movement and the end movement have to do with this. So it is undeniable, really, that Tarja's firing had a lot, I would say, everything, fundamentally to do with this song. Because logically, had Tarja's firing not happened, and the backlash not happened, this song would never have been written, specifically because Tuomas would never have become depressed enough to write it.

@@isaiahwelch8066 you can come up with whatever interpretation you choose to but that does not change the "FACT" that Tuomas himself has said what the song is about, Il go with what he says anytime.

@@nicod1361 : Just because Tuomas doesn't give the entire background in an interview, doesn't make what I said any less true. Even Tuomas, in the Open Letter, acknowledges the "FACT" that the past the band had with Tarja had some part, some piece, of why she was fired. And in that sense, Tuomas acknowledged the past in the Open Letter -- which, as I stated, was fundamentally and directly responsible for why Tuomas wrote this song. And to say that the past with Tarja didn't have anything to do with the song would be akin to saying you have traveled from one place to another destination, and then denying the time the journey took in between departure from the first place and arriving to the second. Time, whether we acknowledge it or not, still plays it's part, given we move through four dimensions in life: Length, width, depth, and time. So again, denying the time Tarja was a part of the band? Denying the very real reason that was the catalyst for the Open Letter, and denying the reason for the depression Tuomas had. Because I know what depression is like, and I know, which the Open Letter confirms, how someone can roll around past events in their head and think about things a lot. And in Tuomas' case, the drama surrounding her was part and parcel of everything that led up to writing The Poet and the Pendulum. So to say that it wasn't, when it was, is wrong.

Have you ever listen to any intevju with Tuomas? He was never going to kill himself, it was some sort of mental suicide. To kick out Tarja was a long process, it started 2002 when Marko became a member of NW, and for almost one year they knew Tarja had go, but first they should use her for the tour Once. For the last three weeks Tuomas had that letter with him to the shows and after the last gig he gave her that. It would probebley never have happend if the guys had helpt Tarja july 30 2020 in Mexico when she was sexual abused on stage by a fan. She felt on the floor right beside Tuomas and the man pressed his hand into Tarjas pants, but none of the guys helpted her. But the man they just met some days before he was the contact person on the first South Amerika tour, ran out on stage and helpted her and that was they guy she later married. The way Tarja was treated by the NW band was horrible. Tuomas also admitted that to firering Tarja was like going thrue a bad and ugly divorce, and that it was not just one persons fault, they were all guilty to it. Marko wrote his biography 2017 and he said that ” Tarja was never the problem” and today there are no hard feelings between them, so if people talk things could be fine. Tuomas father died 2022 and Tarja sent condolences immediately, Tuomas was very touched by that.

There are three more songs about that topic: "Bye Bye Beautiful", where Marko was involved, "I Walk Alone", Tarja's response and "Master Passion Greed", the most angry diss-track Tuomas ever wrote. On footage you can literally see Tuomas animosity towards Tarja's husband Marcelo. Tuomas just couldn't stand him any longer as he followed every step of Tarja on tour. Rumors that Tuomas might have had developed feeling for Tarja earlier, wouldn't help to cure the toxic relation the two men shared. As great as Tuomas composing skills are, as less seem to be his communication skills, last seen on the file "Marko", where Tuomas obviously was unable to talk to him after his retreat. Thats not the behavior I expect from an adult being towards a band mate that has been 20 years with them.

His teacher said that he was talking to Toumas when he was around 9 years old I think and Toumas told him that he had read War and Peace 3 times. The teacher said he was so shocked that he rang Toumas' parents and asked them and they said that he has and that he had written his name for his grandmother at 3 years old. I can't remember the name of the documentary though or how to search for it.

I would never ever accuse Tarja or Tuomas and the band of what has happened. Nor Marcello. You haven't been there folks! Regarding of what has happened afterwards it was a good ending for either side finally. The band moved on and found Floor in the end. And Tarja went on and made her own music and an astonishing career as well, not dependent on just singing someone elses songs anymore. The band and Tarja both seem to be happy now. And that's all there is to say. No judgement, no accusation, that's all bs.

When I heard Anette I could not listen to her voice so I stopped watching Nightwish until I watched Wacken 2013. When I heard Floor(never before though)I came back to Nightwish. I've read a lot of Floor's history and the fact that Nightwish called her for "stand-in work" made me very happy. [Yes that's Kai. Jukka had to leave the band citing constant insomnia.
