Marko is the 2nd bassist of Nightwish, replacing Sami Vänskä in 2001. Marko is an amazing vocalist in his own right and has an extensive resume. Check out his other band Tarot and his solo album. With Nightwish he shines as the lead in the songs Islander, While Your Lips Are Still Red, High Hopes (Pink Floyd cover) and Endlessness. Marko also does lots of collaborations as guest vocalist with Delain and Dark Sarah, among others, and side project Northern Kings.

Introduction to Marko Hietala (born 1966) His music career began at piano lessons at the age of eight. At the age of 11-12 he started playing guitar. After elementary school, Hietala studied singing at the Kuopio School of Music (high school, but added music lessons) and later singing, bass and music theory at the Pop & Jazz Conservatory in Helsinki. So we can say he is an educated singer and bassist. Instruments what he can play: piano, synthesizers, guitar, bass guitar, vocals, drums. Marko has mentioned the following people as his musical role models: bassists Geezer Butler and Bob Daisley; singers Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford and Kate Bush. Marko’s metal music journey began with hearing as a child Black Sabbath’s LP “Masters of Reality”. Founded with his brother a heavy metal band called Tarot in 1984. The band still exists in theory, but it is very uncertain whether it will ever continue. The drummer of the band died after a long illness in 2016 and no new one has been taken. Since they had played together for a long time and there were no crew changes in the band at all ..., it can be a difficult situation to continue anymore. Marko joined Nightwish in Dec 2001 when Tuomas Holopainen and the band's manager called him and said that there would be a place in the band for a vocalist and a bass player. Since then, Marko’s main band has been Nightwish. In the spring of 2002, the band made the album Century Child (the band’s fourth album) and in the summer of 2002, they went on tour. These were Marko’s first jobs as a member of Nightwish. Marko is a real music worker, he has played or sung in several bands and visited the records of many different bands / artists. He has been a member of these bands: Nightwish, Tarot, Northern Kings, Heavy Christmas, Sapattivuosi and Sinergy. He has sung on albums by the following bands: Ayreon, Dreamtale, Altaria, Amorphis, Delain, Conquest and Dark Sarah. In addition, he made a 2019 solo album and was on tour in Finland in 2019 and Central Europe in early 2020 (Jan-Feb, just before COVID- 19 !). When Nightwish had a mid-year in 2017, the previous world tour ended 2016 and the next one started in 2018 and they didn’t make a new album - Marko went on a Delain European tour as a singer (male parts). Marko has collaborated for a long time with the Dutch symphonic metal band Delain. Delain was also a support band on Nightwish’s 2015 North American tour. When Delain started, they had only two members, the founding members. So, for the first album, musicians were gathered for the missing roles. Marko then played all the bass parts on that first album and the male vocals on five songs. While many people think that Marko is not valued enough, this list says otherwise (excerpt from Wikipedia): As guest/session member 1990 Warmath - Gehenna - (backing vocals, keyboards) 1999 To/Die/For - All Eternity - (backing vocals) 2001 Gandalf - Rock Hell - (backing vocals) To/Die/For - Epilogue - (backing vocals) 2002 Dreamtale - Beyond Reality - (vocals on "Heart's Desire" & "Where the Rainbow Ends") Virtuocity - Secret Visions - (vocals on "Eye for an Eye" & "Speed of Light") 2003 Aina - Days of Rising Doom - (vocals) Altaria - Invitation - (backing vocals) Charon - The Dying Daylights - (backing vocals) Evemaster - Wither - (vocals on "Wings of Darkness (Tarot cover)") 2004 Shade Empire - Sinthetic - (vocals on "Human Sculpture") Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus - Kylmä tila (vocals on "Älkää selvittäkö" & "Samarialainen") 2005 After Forever - Remagine - (vocals on "Face Your Demons") Turmion Kätilöt - Niuva 20 - (backing vocals on "Stormbringer (Deep Purple cover)") 2006 Amorphis - Eclipse - (backing vocals) Defuse - Defuse - (vocals on "DIB") Delain - Lucidity - (vocals on 5 tracks, bass guitars) Eternal Tears of Sorrow - Before the Bleeding Sun - (backing vocals) Stoner Kings - Fuck the World - (backing vocals) Verjnuarmu - Muanpiällinen Helevetti - (backing vocals) 2007 Amorphis - Silent Waters - (backing vocals) Nuclear Blast All-Stars: Into the Light - (vocals on "Inner Sanctuary") Machine Men - Circus of Fools - (vocals on "The Cardinal Point") 2008 Ebony Ark - Decoder 2.0 - (vocals on 5 tracks) 2009 Amorphis - Skyforger - (backing vocals) Delain - April Rain - (vocals on "Control the Storm" & "Nothing Left") Marenne - The Past Prelude - (backing vocals) Elias Viljanen - Fire-Hearted - (vocals on "Last Breath of Love") Turmion Kätilöt - Lentävä KalPan Ukko - (backing vocals) Turmion Kätilöt - Verkko Heiluu - (backing vocals) 2010 Erja Lyytinen - Voracious Love - (vocals on "Bed of Roses") 2011 Grönholm - Silent Out Loud - (Vocals on ″Vanity″) 2012 Delain - We Are the Others - (vocals on two bonus live tracks on the Digipak version) 2013 A2Z - Parasites of Paradise - (acoustic guitar on "Nightcrawler", "Caterpillar" & "Praying Mantis") Ayreon - The Theory of Everything - (vocals) Turmion Kätilöt - Technodiktator - (backing vocals on "Jalopiina") Lazy Bonez - Vol.1 - (duet with Udo Dirkschneider on First to Go - Last to Know) 2014 Delain - The Human Contradiction - (vocals on "Your Body Is a Battleground" & "Sing to Me") 2016 Avantasia - Ghostlights - (vocals on "Master of the Pendulum") 2018 Ayreon - Ayreon Universe - The Best of Ayreon Live - (vocals) Dark Sarah - The Golden Moth - (vocals on "The Gods Speak") All done in addition to his own bands! Marko has said that he could not say NO when he was young. Nowadays, he knows how to say NO ... He can choose what feels interesting and what he wants to do.

Marko is just an amazing musician. No idea if he has had any voice training. Tuomas is the writer of most of this stuff tho, so if anything, nightwish = Tuomas and Tuomas = nightwish. That being said, hebben surrounded himself with the best musicians and singers, and that makes nightwish the best. Have you heard Troy yet? He is also a good singer, there are some very nice harmonies on the latest album. You can also see Troy for example in My Walden live at Wembley. And in the acoustic version of How’s the heart, which also showcases floors amazing abilities.

Are you two familiar with the classic writer "Homer"? This song is taken from his epic Greek story about the Trojan War. Odysseus (Ulysses) the King of Ithaca after tens years of war sails home and it takes another 10 years to make the trip. Along the way one of his adventure takes him by the island of the Sirens who lure sailors to their death on the jagged rocks with their haunting and beautiful voices. All of the sailors had their ears plugged up with beeswax, except for Odysseus, who was tied to the mast as he wanted to hear the song. He told his sailors not to untie him as it would only make him drown himself. This is the story being told by Marco in this song. Tarja of course is the Siren. A lady with a violin playing to the seals Hearken to the sound of calling Who tied my hands to the wheel? The zodiac turns over me (Come to me) Somewhere there my fate revealed I hear but how will I see I tied myself to the wheel The winds talk to my sails, not me (Come to me) Somewhere there my fate revealed I hear but how will I see

Anything from the "From Wishes to Eternity" DVD is worth watching, the band used to have a more Power Metal sound back in the days and Tarja's voice was mezzo, songs like "Pharaoh Sails to Orion", "Sacrament of Wilderness" are awesome to listen to and the ballad "Swanheart" will get you teary-eyed. And about the singers, you've head Floor, Tarja and Marco, but you haven't listened to Tuomas singing LMAO (he sings in their 1st CD, Angels Fall First).

Well, who isn't team Marko? When Tarja was with the band, he was the absolutely necessary counterpart to make the singing dynamic (with just Tarja, the music overshadowed her quite a bit). With Anette, he took over in some songs and was the pillar on which she could build on. And with Floor, we don't even need to mention: they harmonize to the point that it's ridiculous, but also can contrast without feeling disconnected from each other. Actually, there have been live performances, where Troy also joines them (he is also a very good vocalist on his own, but more in a folkish style), and his voice is like a blender: You won't even know anymore, who sings and how many sing. It sounds like one voice and many voices at once. Markos voice is also special, but by accident: In the late 90s he realized there was a distortion in his voice, went to see a doc, had polyps. He did what one has to do: operation to cut them out. Well, dunno if the surgeon was drunk or smth, he was way too enthusiastic with the cutting, right through Markos vocal cord. His voice was gone. He had to learn to use his voice again and of course to sing. It was never completely restored: His higher falsetto was gone for good. His left vocal cord was permanently damaged without repair, and so it's not in sync with his right vocal cord. And that's what makes his voice sound very unique. Markos double beard has another history on its own: He was a vocalist and bass player in his own band since the early 80s (before you and I were born). They became very popular in Finland very quickly and there were at least once a year interviews with him on finnish national TV. And from the very beginning he was asked about his non exisent beard (cause you know, beards and metal and stuff). It became kind of a pun, to ask him if he will grow a beard till next year. At one point (I think around 2000?) he was kinda drunk, and answered: ' You know what? If I ever become a member of Nightwish, I will grow a beard. Heck, I'll grow TWO beards!'. (at that time, Nightwish was already huge in Finland, scandinavian and german speaking countries, making them one of the most successful bands in town). Well, guess what happened less than a year later...

As a 20 year fan of Nightwish I say you cannot go wrong with Tarja Or Floor... Annette.. Well, that depends on taste in vocals IMO. Too shrill on high notes for my ears, But a few damn good tunes nailed better than Floor or Tarja would! Scaretale and Slow Love Slow take the cake for her! This song, "The Siren" ... Floor did a good job, but Tarja's tonality really suits the Egyptian/middle eastern vibe. As for Marco... A great testament to his vocal prowess IMO is the demo to The Poet and the Pendulum, all him, every part! But please listen to that after the Floor and Annette versions!

Any plans to react to 'Anette Olzon' era, Nightwish's 2nd vocalist February 2007 to October 1st 2012 (5 years)? Nightwish's best selling albums worldwide currently are 'Dark Passion Play'(2007) and 'Imaginaerum'(2011) both with Anette, and 'Once'(2005) with Tarja. Selection of Anette era Nightwish songs follow (see *footnote* regarding live video performances): - 'Amaranth' official video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/eF6kfZ-GgaZ4mNU and official live audio from 'Made in Hong Kong (and Various Other Places)' at kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmbJm513nqibrLM - 'Sahara' official audio at kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYqbdGh4mLJ-l8k and official live audio from 'Made in Hong Kong (and Various Other Places)' at kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3OcmoOXadBgqbugive - 'The Crow, The Owl and The Dove' (softer) official video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6q8ZoSDm5lkms0 (keep a tissue at hand for the end) - 'Meadows of Heaven' (softer) official audio at kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4qch3xod5xkmM0 or *soundcheck live* video ( Anette and small orchestra only, no band members present ) at kzbin.info/www/bejne/nojEhaiqpNydeLc - 'Eva' (softer) official audio at kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaqlZKpndrOeaKM - 'Slow, Love, Slow' (softer / jazz tones) official audio at kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpLEg6GhgdF2l5I and unofficial live at kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJyUm5iAd9SWmJo - 'Rest Calm' official audio at kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5TQqGmGlpljnNU - 'Escapist' , ignore the incorrect text stating 'Bye Bye Beautiful', official audio at kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3zYdHmhZs-Sf9E the often recommended 'Scaretale' isn't representative of Anette and has to be taken in context i.e the Imaginaerum film. *Footnote* Recommending a specific live video performance with Anette will depend on whether you don't mind good quality fan cams or prefer more official footage. Many will state that Anette can't sing well live, she most certainly can e.g. a short clip from the end of 'Meadows of Heaven' (Nightwish song) in Stockholm 13th of August 2009 at a sound check that shouldn't spoil the song as a whole at kzbin.info/www/bejne/nojEhaiqpNydeLc ( *short clip but avoid clicking if you don't want any spoilers at all* , no Nightwish band members present, just the small soundcheck orchestra ) I agree Anette wasn't consistent live, had more bad nights than good nights, but there are fan cams / unofficial videos that do capture her at her best live as does the official Anette era live Nightwish album 'Made in Hong Kong (and Various Other Places)' #TeamAnyEra

Tx for the reaction but to correct you, Floor even if she can sing pure Opera at a very high level, is not full classical trained. She has finished Rock Academy in the Netherlands and in one year of that academy she had classical lessons. And after Rock Academy she had for one year some additional classical lessons, just like she learned herself heavy growling and many more types of vocal techniques. She is just a natural talent.

You know, Tarja has classical and operatic music education and she was first operatic singer in heavy music. On the beginning Nightwish was acoustic band, only acoustic guitar, piano and female vocal, but Tarja's voice was to loud to acoustic music, that's why Nightwish is metal band and in those times Tarja was biggest star from this band, without her Nightwish would never become so popular. And she singing not only in opetatic way, you should listen her solo stuff, it's better than Nightwish, I love her songs so much. She also singing classical music, this what you heard it's not her full operatic voice. Oh, and Tarja's and Marko's voices is the best combination. Marko had lighter timbre than Tarja and it's sounds great when they singing together, Marko with his raspy light voice and Tarja with very beautiful dark soprano. I love Tarja's voice so much since I was 8. ;)
