I've rejected a match 2weeks before as they demanded dowry. The guy was pin drop silence when the whole dowry discussion was happening. This was the first red flag for me. After one week his family called and asked for more money. My father said, he doesn't have it. Father asked the guy why are you asking after all the discussion was over. and the guy said that their family doesn't have much money for the marriage and he supported his family for asking more money. Me and family was scared that before marriage they're demanding money won't they ask after the marriage?? So me and my family called off this match. Actually I feel what you do returns back . My father didn't take any thing for my brother 40 yrs ago n was just the best . It returned back later yrs after when my father in law did the same . He said v have had our daughter married n understand things . V don't want anything just a marriage as you have decided for your daughter . N had simple but elegant marriage . First of all it is not dowry it is a fees paid to groom by bride for fulfilling her needs. He deserves that fees because after all he had put a lot of efforts in getting the govt job. And that girl in free without doing any effort would get access to all the assets which primarily belongs to groom and even the salary of husband who does govt job. Think of the effort he had put for getting govt job. He deserves that fees which you called dowry. If she dont want to give money she can marry a person whose income is 20k or 25k. Why was she approaching the guy who is beyond her and her's family level. Because marriage should be done between the same level. And after all it is a one time fees to keep their daughter happy.

Because we don't believe in taking money from woman because in my opinion it is shameful for man to take woman's money. I have belief in myself I dont need girl's money. But willing to give dowry in our case. Because we dont want to let ourself down in any case. I myself a govt job guy joined 6 months before. Now a day's the groom family required a girl with higher education, good family ground, Job holder with high salary, Maid who can do cooking, house chores and take care of in-laws and dowry with all the packages then why can't bride family except the good salary from the groom. It is the cause of female infanticide and foeticide in India. Women life has no value in family and considered as liability of the family. Alimony is still not a major issue in India but dowry is. Many women in my state Kerala now don't prefer to get married because of the constant dowry death cases. They prefer to build a career first .

@Diganta Dowry imposes injustice on women. Men have a choice to walk out if the bride side demands govt job. But dowry is a well established system practiced throughout India with exceptions in few places. Even a well qualified women is asked to pay dowry for marriage regardless of her capabilities. There is a difference between "choice" and "demand giving rise to injustice". You cannot compare bride side demand of govt employee with dowry demanded by groom side. It is just like a man demanding Homemaker or a working women as his spouse. At times man expect a women to leave her job and do household chores. Then this is not a crime, it is his choice to go for a homemaker or a working Profesional wife. Though whether the demand is dowry from groom's side or govt job from bride's side both pollutes the essence of marriage and makes it a mere business deal. That's disappointing !

They lack knowledge about southern states and generalize every little thing . I am ready for the impending storm that's about to ensue. So I'll just leave my opinion here. Asking for dowry , i mean insisting that i cant marry until you give me 'x' sum of money is indeed bad. Equally bad is the attitude of bride's side during arranged marriages. They put forth so many fricking parameters that the most important of them all, the ability to stay loyal and be a loving partner for your kid takes a backseat. Its near impossible to get a good alliance unless you land a 6 figure salary or have a government job. Most parents even insist on seeing the salary slip or even ITR of the prospective grooms. But imagine a groom asking the same to the bride or her parents? That's the society we live in. For every issue you raise there is an equally or even more morally grave counter issue on the other side. Maybe when both parties give importance to love and respect than seeing marriage as a business, the situation will eventually change. Peace out~
