Good tutorial Ed - and quite comprehensive too. Thanks. Just to add to what Ed has explained - you can add neutral control points to areas of the image too. The idea being that it doesn't make any adjustments what so ever - they are very useful when doing selections like Ed was doing on the model, as you drop them into areas you don't want the adjustment of the selected area to effect. It helps to contain the selections to an area without any spill into other areas of the image.

Nice tutorial Ed - I personally think that Viveza is the best plug-in ever made for PS. You can remove small distractions and match or change colors of even very small objects to blend into a background. If you run the Structure slider to the negative numbers, you can smooth out a choppy looking sky. And the thing I like best is that you can drive the eye to your focal point with all the control points. I always use this plug-in as one of the last steps in PS as it really pops the image just right! Again thanks for doing the tutorials!

Ed, I have a video request. I have been a solely lightroom user for about an year now and started learning photoshop recently. And now nik collection, thanks to you. While I do see the power of these individual software, it is really confusing what to use for what as all the 3 can do most of the stuff with varying levels of difficulty and time consumption. I'm in a dilemma as to what my workflow should be. Of course we can always use more than one application to get the job done. But in that case, how do you go about it? I wish you would make a video on what you use for what and how your workflow would be with Lightroom, Photoshop and NIK collection(if possible) in the mix. I'm sure this video would be appreciated by many. Oh and as usual great video. You are the best :D

Is there a way to adjust the power of the control point and not only the radius. Like decide how close to the point tone the selection must be made. For example you could chose to select only tones that are very similar to your control point, or the opposite, be very generous and select tones not so similar as well?

Great tutorial, thanks! I just subscribed. But I think I'm missing something here: can't I do the same thing with Lightroom's adjustment brush? It seems to me I can...only quicker and easier. What am I missing? Thanks again!
@clearlyed8 жыл бұрын
+Paul Livingston You are correct that the adjustment brush in lightroom is awesome. That said with control points the nik collection allows you to make more sophisticated selections using their algorithm that uses color, tone and contrast to analyse the image. It just depends if you need it or not. Great for a few images but not for everything my opinion.
@paullivingston10098 жыл бұрын

Instead of Shift clicking each point you can draw a box around them or Click and Shift Click in the list to the right. Easier way to make groups. I think CRTL or CMD G works just like making layer groups in Photoshop.

hi Ed, i'm a bit confused why would we use this if we have ps or lr, in ps we can use adj layers and masks, and in lr the brush and the history is amazing, so what's missing that can be exclusively obtained by using vevesa
@clearlyed7 жыл бұрын
The Nik collection is just a plugin that gives you different creative ways of editing your photos. I don't use it very much at all. that being said I know there are a lot of people out there that enjoy using them. Its up to you. I you don't see the point then honestly you are probably advanced enough to not seed these plugins.

Hi Ed, A nice tutorials about Nik, but the most important question for me is how you evaluate your experience in using Nik ? I mean do you think its could be more useful ( or equal to ) than the other Lr tools like brush , graduated filters and radial filters ? do you believe as an experienced Lr user that Nik could offer more handy options and easier way to edit photos ? Thank you :)
@clearlyed8 жыл бұрын
+Fadi Hammad I have been using he Nik Collection by Google on and off for years. There are elements that I love and others that I do not. Personally it is great for specific images but not for batch editing. I don't like that in Lightroom once the edit is done that is it and I don't like to round house through photoshop with every image. That said the HDR, analogue, dfine and silver fx are pretty amazing. Have I got masks is great too as this is not something you can do very well inside Lightroom. At first it can be confusing but once you have learned all the features it is pretty awesome.
@fadisg8 жыл бұрын
+Photos In Color Thank you again:) So, what I can say after I read your reply that the Nik is worth to spend some time on it ? and the editing experience could be in the same quality( or very close ) of/to Lr ? Im right in that ?

@clearlyed8 жыл бұрын
+jl sc It is similar however in someways less powerful but in any ways more powerful. The most important thing is the very cleaver masking and control points. It is a plugin to add onto lightroom not replace it. I hope this helped with you Nik Collection usage.
@jlsc41258 жыл бұрын
Photos In Color I can do masking with the lightroom brushes and tools. Really not worth the effort to bring in another app to do what I can already do in lightroom. Any more detail and its easier and more powerful to go to photoshop.

You treat Lr like it's worthless and you are not spending any time on it like you show Nik in Ps.
@clearlyed8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Wiggers thank you so much for you comment. I do actually point out how to access it in both Lightroom and photoshop. Essentially it works exactly the same in both Lightroom and photoshop. I believe I say that. The reason for using photoshop is to demonstration it in photoshop is to show the none destructive method in photoshop. Lightroom is pretty simple. Just 'edit in m' then 'save' out. That's it. There really is no reason to spend more time there. I will do one of the next tutorials in Lightroom though so you can see the process. Also my entire channel has been nearly completely dedicated to Lightroom. I think it is amazing and. Nik collection is awesome.

Yeah I was to quick with commenting. My bad. I've got Nik yesterday and started to find tutotials. I've found yours first, watched it, and noticed you indeed show how to acces it in Lr, but nothing else. And Im a Lr person. I don't even have Ps installed. So that's the reason behind my comment.
