My dad always wore Air Zoom Pegasus since 1984, I wore Pegasus since the Peg 34. I had been sick for a year recently in remission so I didn’t try the 39th edition, just ordered a black & white peg 40, I have stories with peg 38 great memories, I hiked on light trail, traveled with it, even attended events and conventions. You cannot go wrong with this shoe, it ticks many boxes by being an All-around-daily trainer”, great review, simple and informative. Thank you!🙏🏻

I love this review! As a runner with 5 months of running experience, I really enjoy running in this shoe! 250 miles in the shoe as of today, and I’ve done many many runs from my longest and most gruelling 21 mile run in 27 degree heat and 93% humidity, to a easy evening 8 mile run, the shoe has been secure and responsive. No heel slippage issue unlike my invincible 3s, very consistent and surprisingly comfortable ride! It got significantly more comfortable the more miles I put on it, especially after the 100 mile mark. I like this shoe at an easy to moderate effort, but much less so at threshold effort. (For some reference I usually run at an average pace at 5:35/km on my median end of moderate runs) 😊

@@SagasuRunning update: just a hair under 400 miles I love this daily trainer so much, really strengthened my previously weak ankles and achilles tendon ! It’s literally been my workhorse (no pun intended) and helped me run even a sub 2h half marathon at my zone 3 heart rate for 90% of the run It’s slowly losing the responsiveness and cushioning by about 20-25% but well seems like it can last me up to 700 miles maybe So far I’ve done two 20 miler runs in them since my last review and it’s been an absolute pleasure running in these, only felt a mild numbness in my forefoot beyond that 19 mile mark but the shoe still encouraged me to cruise and maintain my pace so hey, that’s still pretty good 👍 Looking forward to more runs in this versatile and reliable daily trainer !😊

Another great video. I run mainly in Nikes, so your insights on running shoes has helped me tremendously on building a solid rotation and viewing running shoes in a whole new perspective. I bought into the plated daily craze a while back, but have strayed away from it due to leg injuries. Since then, I've been noticing the benefits of doing the bulk of my miles in Pegs, and recently my Invincible 3s for those slightly fatigued leg days (we run a lot in the military). Want a pair of these 40s just for that upper, but got 2 (pretty much new) pairs of 39s during clearance. Keep up the great content, the running community needs more folks like you.

I’m happy to read this. Something I’m really beginning to realize is that it’s not about the shoe being minimal or low stack, but it’s more about how easy it flexes and how they promotes building foot strength. Even the Invincible 3, with all it’s foam, has a type of flex to it and there is a benefit there. I knew all of this prior… but it’s really hitting me recently as to how important it really is. Thank you for the support and kind words. 🙌🏻

I used the Pegasus 40 for my easy training. At 310 miles (500km) I had to retire them because my feet were hurting badly. After 250 miles it has provided no sufficient protection in the forefoot anymore, although in the heel there was still plenty of support. The outer sole looks like new, very little wear. So for me 300 miles is the maximum I would credit the Pegasus 40 longevity wise. Maybe others can run more miles in them, but for me it is the maximum. I weigh 80 kg and wear size 10 US, this may play a role too.

My boring daily is still Vomero 16. Stiffer compared to the squishiest ZoomX in the flagship models but i equate the planting feeling to the snappiness of a low to the ground traditional racer. Just stubborn appearance of the old school flat in race day, boring daily driver will remain relevant despite the innovation of a super daily driver. Either way, there’s going to be something for everyone. A win for all runner!!!

Agree. Options are good for runners. I just with marketing departments would stop milking tech for tech’s sake. Also the Vomero 16 is a classic Nike ride. Wasn’t my thing when I tried it years ago… but I’m looking forward to the changes in the Vomero 17!

I passed on the 40 because I felt it was a minor upgrade compared to the upgrade from the 38 to the 39. I'd been using the 39 as my daily trainer, but they didn't quite fit the bill when I was doing recovery work or very easy runs, where I'd actually notice the forefoot air zoom unit (yup, I'm slow). So I added the Triumph 20 for those and my long runs and I'm using the 39 for some of my faster workouts. I may have to upgrade to a new pair next year so I'll see what the 41 offers or maybe switch to a speedy daily trainer to complement the Triumph.

The Peg41 will be full ReactX and still with two airbags, one in the forefoot and one in the heel. It should be softer and bouncier, which honestly has me a little worried. We shall see! I prefer a firmer more flexible shoe for recovery ones generally… but even the Peg isn’t always the best. I liked the Vomero 17 a lot after NYC… but I wouldn’t recommend it as a recovery shoe. I didn’t follow the triumph 20 very much but I know many loved it for how plush and comfortable it was.
@OdanUrr87
@OdanUrr87 Жыл бұрын
A softer Peg? Not sure I like the sound of that. Won't that make the forefoot airbag even more prominent? The T20 is pretty comfortable, though I use a (firmer) custom orthotic. The only firmer shoe I was considering to possibly replace the Peg is the Adizero SL, though opinions seem to be divided on how good of a shoe it is. @@SagasuRunning

@@OdanUrr87 Ya, that is my worry. The only ReactX experience I have (we all have) is in the Infinity RN 4, which was a complete mess. Nike seems to be completely replacing React foam with ReactX foam across their entire line, road and trial, for 2024. We shall see. 🤞🏻 I’m a big fan of the Adizero SL… it’s a great shoe. I’m hope they do update it in 2024 and that the Supernova Rise isn’t replacing it… because I have zero interest in that shoe at the moment. If we do see a 2024 Adizero SL I’ll definitely be covering it on the channel.

Ya l, having a shoe like the Peg or SL definitely makes you (and your foot) work harder… which is the point of a trainer anyway. It’s good to mix shoes and rotate a few… but having a shoe that makes you work isn’t a bad thing at all.

I tried the Pegasus for the first time with the 39th version and was so disappointed, the midsole felt completely dead to me, both at easy and at moderate paces (and I don't mind firmer midsoles/boring shoes, at the time I'm absolutely loving the saucony ride 15). I also felt the forward air unit below my foot in an uncomfortable way, and I gave up on the shoe after 80km (something I almost never do). In my opinion, zoom air units are an antiquated technology, but they are so much a part of Nike's dna that it is very difficult to just take them out. Asics had the same problem with gel but in the last Nimbus version they seem to have found a way to make the transition, with better foams and the gel being there in name, but not contributing much to the ride. I'm happy for everyone that the shoe works for, if it's still going on after 40 years they must be doing something right, but it sure seems to be in need of some innovation. As always, very interesting video, I love these "deeper dives" in running shoes.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning Жыл бұрын
I agree… zoom air units are very dated. They can work well but there are honestly better options. However, given how iconic “air” is to Nike and the Pegasus… I don’t know what it will take for them to remove it. They did remove it from the Vomero…so there is hope… but I’m not going to hold my breath for not. We should see a sizable update to the Peg next year… which should give us a hint of where they are headed. You are right, Asics Gel is similar and they have phased it out or modernized it fully. Honestly, why I love the Peg so much is about toe geometry, foam and simplicity/affordability. It’s hard to find that in 2023.

Agree with this. I also find the air units quite intrusive. I noticed them most on the Vomero 16 where I couldn't run in it for longer than 45min or so before my feet went numb. If Nike ditches the air units on the 41 I'll definitely give it a shot.

Totally agree in "we still need a boring daily trainer" and currentlly im using Rebels v3 which are...not boring but still soft and non-plated. Anything up to 10k, slow or fast, theyre great (only cons are the sole which is not safe on wet asphalt and slippery insole that makes me bend/roll my toes). Also great for sockless use. I picked up a pair of NB 880v12 and absolutely hated it on my first run. It felt rough, not enough cushion, and not responsive at all. Then I realized… actually it was my form that was sloppy. Super trainers are more fun and make running easier, I 100% thst runners would benefit greatly from using a boring daily trainer on easy/base training days to get the necessary feedback on their running form.

Love your content 🙂A couple questions: 1) At 8:43, you mention building foot strength which I agree with. Would the Nike Invincibles still accomplish this goal or is the benefit muted because there's too much foam? I assume this is why you mention in your other video that the Streakfly was great for this goal. 2) What are some alternatives to the Streakfly that are lightweight, non-plated and can help build foot strength? Mach 5, Adizero Adios? Thanks!
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning Жыл бұрын
Well… TBH, the Invincible 3 is too much foam. BUT… it’s surprising flexible given this size so you do get some foot strength in them. Say compared to something like the Asics Nimbus which so comparably stiffer and has less give. ZoomX is a magic foam in many ways. Plus in a softer shoe your joints need stiffen in order to support themselves in the softer/less table shoe so you do build some leg stiffness in them too. BUT… if foot and leg strength is your goal the Invincible 3 is not the shoe. The Pegasus 40 and Streakfly are much better. The Adios 8 is a good option, that is much more durable than the Streakfly (see my comparison video on the two) but the Adios 8 does have the energy torsion system which doesn’t make the shoe quite as free flexing as a Streakfly, though it is very good still. The New Balance Rebel series is another one to look at for all of this. The Mach 5 is a little bit more on the cushioned side, but you do get some decent foot flex. The new Cielo Road might be another one to check out if you like Hoka. Thank you for the support and kind words. I’m glad my content is useful! 🤙🏻

ahhh just the video i needed to see. im fairly new to running and unfortunately i kinda hurt my left hip ahead of my first marathon. not sure if its the volume or the plated shoes but i think most likely a combination of both. feel like my weaker side is not strong enough to handle the so called pop of plated shoes at higher frequency and longer distances if that makes sense... i only started running in April and, like you, also came from cycling. anyway have returned to using my pegs for the time being but the i have the trail 4 version which i personally think are outstanding in terms of comfort. admittedly i only have 3 pairs (invincible 3, xtep 160x 3.0). at my current state think i may end up using the pegs instead of plated shoes for my upcoming marathon which is only 10 days away. sadly i may also have to abandon my miniscule goal of hitting a sub-4 all the best, appreciate your brilliant and thoughtful content

One of the things running requires, especially compared to cycling, is durability. Running is very high impact and it takes time for your body to build up over time. Too much too soon is always a problem in running. Hip pain is likely from that and a high stack plated shoe. If you want to learn more check out my “shoes are tool” video where I talk about this sort of stuff in detail. As for your marathon… I’d maybe see if you can make the Invincible 3 work for it. You’ll appreciate the extra foam (over the peg) in the later half of the race… Good luck out there! Be safe.

Interesting, for me it was the other way around, but with the peg 38/37 shield and the More v4. Even though I did like the 37 shield, I hated the 38 right from the start. And I used to run in the cheap Downshifter 6 for a very long time, so the pegasus was pretty plush compared to that. I found the 38 way too harsh under the forefoot, and the ride 'flat'. A lot of Nike shoes give me cramps in my right foot, and my left foot starts to go numb after about 5K. I gave both pairs of pegs to my mother, and after hoarding shoes looking for the right ones, I totally fell in love with the More v4, so now I have 2 pairs as my daily trainer.

Yeah I am not a huge fan of plated shoes as a daily trainer. I use plated shoes more often when I am on close to a race just to let my body get adjusted to it. I’m so glad Asics has a non-plated “supertrainer” such as the Superblast. Its high stack and fun, bouncy ride. But I still run in a “white bread” shoe such as the Peg 39 to really strengthen my feet and concentrate on my stride. Yea, React is boring but it makes you work a little harder which is builds strength. It is also a stable foam which is a plus.

I am wary about only using plated shoes because I wonder if it will make it so the small muscles of the feet atrophy. I had this problem when I switched from cycling to running because cycling shoes are very stiff. Right now, I'm enjoying my Gel Nimbus. It's more cushioned than something like the Peg but I like the stability of the wide base. For me, it's just about finding a shoe that's comfortable and enjoyable to run in.

@SagasuRunning 10 ай бұрын
They may be a good option for walking. They are a firmer foam with a lower stack that will give stability and the 10mm drop will help to alleviate strain from your Achilles and calves. Since the Peg 41 is coming on in a ml the or two you should be able to find good deals one them. You might also want to look at the Nike Winflo as well. It’s a little firmer of a platform and a little wider overall on the outsole which will give even more support for walking.

I’m late here and I 💯 agree with you, we’re getting too lazy and highly dependable on “super trainers” to do most of the leg work, no pun intended. I regularly switch between a plated and non plated trainers to actually train my leg muscles. On the other hand, it is fun running with these super trainers, makes it more exciting and enjoyable. At the end of the day, there’s no right or wrong, do what’s best for you. There’s no point for a brand spending millions on R&D without innovating midsole material right?

@SagasuRunning

I would recommend two pairs of shoes, yes. If you are new to running, worry less about what type on run for now… and more about just building a base. Rotating two shoes will give your feet different training stimulus and make sure you aren’t just repeating the same movements over and over, which could result in an injury. The Peg40 pairs nicely with the Invincible. You’ll get a firmer more traditional shoe and a max stack rolling shoe (see my latest video as to why) and they will work well together. Good luck on your running journey and I’m glad my content is useful for you! 🤙🏻

Honestly I just bring them into the shower with me after my run and wash them with a mild soap or a hand wash laundry detergent. That cleans any grime and sweat out of them. Well, then we are left only with a question - what will the 41 bring? Or do we need it? 😅 Then comes question 2: Do we need updates every year? (sure, big anniversaries build hype;) So, it's hard to say will the general hype reach for the dull Pegasus? Plates aside, the stack height is the even more invasive trend. See the Nimbus 25, for me - a bad change. Yet, well promoted came to be a "successful innovation" and highly anticipated 😮 Not buying it (literally). Daily plates? ...an inevitable offspring. 🤷‍♂️ Brands invested a lot for the racing shoes. They won't let you go away just with that! 😂

I do have a video on my thoughts for the Peg 41 on this channel. One thing I’d add to that is I think we will see a little bit more stack height. Not nimbus 25 levels… but more. I like yearly updates. It’s how the industry works. I have no issue with it. One thing Nike has done with the Peg is that they have made it a bit of an outlier, in a good way. It’s totally different than the industry trends, and that is a good thing. I think maybe because the majority of Nike elites train in the Peg, at some point, so they are asking for a shoe that isn’t too far out there. Now the question here is: Should this be the Peg? Likely not, but it is what is keeping the Peg in check at the moment. We will see what the future holds.

@yalokim5264 The Peg 42 will be an upper change on the 41. That shoe Nike update sthe Peg… on a 2 year cycle. Odd numbered years are major updates and even number years are minor updates, typically just upper changes. I do think the Peg 50 will be both a big deal, even though it’s an even number Nike will go big on it… and it will likely look different than the Peg of today.
