Having a conversation at 3:40 pace seems crazy to me. I’m still struggling to hit 4:00/km for my 5k (20:16 currently PB) so a 3:40:km for a marathon is unreal!

I have used the Alphafly on a ton of 10K to 1/2 marathons and one marathon. I love them. I am even evil enough to think the noise is psyching out other runners as I catch them.

I prefer the Streakfly over 5k, but I guess it depends on the course. The Streakfly is better over a more technical course and given how much less expensive it is it really punches above its weight.

Good session and interesting test. Looking at your Strava for this, you appeared to run the same route in each shoe so no bias there - well assuming the tailwind on the return "fast" leg was not increasing? On the face of it though the Alphafly "wins" hands down with little in between the other two but, without any HR data, hard to quantify whether that was merely down to trying a lot harder in the Alphafly or an actual shoe effect or bit of both? In my own testing, I saw nothing in the Streakfly to think would be faster over even 5K than the NEXT%. Lower weight yes but not massively noticeable and still think 5K is a fair way and just found, as you did mention, that the NEXT% just "helps" more and is more cushioned and responsive than the Streakfly. Haven't tested the Alphafly of late but did tend to find the NEXT% and Alphafly similar but just prefer running in the NEXT% so have never used the Alphafly in a race as yet.

Yes.. as I don’t train with HR data, it’s hard to show effort. Plus doing a rep at 25-30k is quite different from 5-10k elapsed of the run. But tried to keep it roughly the same. Will see what happens in my 5k race on Friday.. would usually go vaporfly, but going to try the Streakfly.. then will be able to do a full review!

@@BenParkes out of pure curiosity (honestly) why do you not use heart rate to monitor performance? I personally enjoy looking at my heart rate at its max when doing hard efforts (I don’t use the data to enhance my performance or anything - I just enjoy suffering and seeing my heart rate close to its maximum). The whole ‘heart rate zones’ for training thing is not good science in my opinion (I am an NHS scientist in Pathology so I have read the literature on heart rate training which is controversial)

Depends a lot about your running style and weight, hiw much kilometers you get from your shoes. I am somewhat lightweight and resonably ok form and I have run around 1500-2000km already with my Vaporflys! Have just recently (last couple hundred kilometers...) started to feel that maybe it is ok chance to new pair (witch I have had in my closet for a year or so) and maybe do some comparison. The height of the shoe has already got down like 6-8mm comparing to new pair of Vapors, so most likely cushoning is not the best anymore. Well, has not bothered that much as I have not raced in over a year now, done just tempos and threshold paces and minority of speed work with these and felt still ok! Have not yet tried the alphaflys yet, have those also in my closet, thinking those would be my marathon/Ironman race shoes, but need some testing!

If you can get hold of the gyakusou version of the next% and put an orthotic in, they work pretty well 👍🏼

If over pronate the Tempo next % should be good for you. The react foam in the heel is firmer with a wide base, the heel cup is supportive and the platform for the air pods is ultra wide. One of my favorite shoes!

I haven't tried the Streakfly (don't normally get on with unisex shoes as I have narrow feet even for a woman) but I personally prefer the Alphafly to the Vaporfly and I'm a heel striker but I do have a high cadence. I don't have an issue with the vaporflys feeling unstable but I have read a lot of heel strikers don't get on with them because of the instability. Personally though the 4mm drop and the design of the Alphafly just seems to work better for me. Not really sure why though!

I do all my training in Saucony, Triumph 19 for easy/long runs and Endorphin Speeds for sessions and race pace stuff. However, I wear Vaporfly on 5k races and am planning on wearing Alphaflys at Brighton Half and full Marathons! Obviously you can't wear or try all the shoes lol but I'm surprised you don't wear more Saucony shoes!

I've got streakfly and vaporfly 2s. For some reason I can run faster over same course in streakfly, but when I run equal pace over same course and equal weather, my power in watts is a lot less in vaporfly 2s.

Im thinking it might be the stack hight together with the squishy zoomX foam. They might be excellent for long distances, but maybe not the best for 5k for some people who even strike midfoot.

They were all around 600-800km. So used, but earlier than you’d hope to change shoes. I’ve heard of Alphaflys popping, but never seen it.

If you look at proven design. Vaporfly 2 is the way to go. Just look at pegasus 39, a shoe love by all levels. alphafly 2 is more expensive and usually used by pro only so the actual review might be bias.

Would you say if someone was okay using the rebel v2 for long runs up to 22 miles do you feel the streakfly would be okay? I went off the rebels because they lacked stability on the lateral side.

Can someone explain to me why the Alphafly are 39mm while the Vaporfly are 40mm, and Alphas look at least 4mm higher than the Vaporfly? And for me, the Alphas really seem also slightly taller than the Tempo Next%, which is supposed to be “illegal”stack hight of 44mm (for pros illegal) is there some shady bias going on for Alphafly for race days? Haha

Alphafly to me is the GOAT shoe. The fit is perfect for my feet, with a large enough toe box (which is suprising for nike !) and the ride is extremely soft and bouncy, because the plat kinda pushes on the airpod, while on the vaporfly (and most carbon plated shoe) it pushes on the outsole so it feels firmer they're still fast for short distance (I got my mile PR in them) Idk why I waited so long to try them, only because they're sold as "marathon rac day only shoe", because they're versatile enough and still a bit durable They have everything I like about a shoe

Not sure how relevant the RRPs are right now: Nike's shop has the Alphafly going cheaper than the Vapourfly with a good selection of sizes. I went for the Alphas earlier this year for that reason. They felt fast from the first run, but they rubbed my arch enough to cause a bit of blistering after 8 km. I thought I would have to return them, but after breaking them in with another run or two and wearing them around the house a bit, the problem has gone away and I'm looking forward to doing my first marathon with them later this year.

Interesting to hear as I suffer from the same issue with the Alphafly l purchased the Alphafly to be my next Marathon shoe but have kind of set them aside for 10k races and under due to the arch rub issue (on the left side only). I have broken 5 mile, 5k and 10k PB's all in the Alphafly over the last few months so a bit of a shame about the arch rub issue. I am loving the Metaspeed Sky atm and hope to have a crack at my first Sub 90 Half in them on March 20th after doing a 1:31 training run (which included a 2 mile WU followed by a few tempo miles) in them a few weeks ago. It's looking like it will be a decision between the tried and tested RC Elite v2 and the Metaspeed Sky for my Spring Marathon shoe for me but it's good to hear that running longer distances in the Alpha may not be a permanent write off 👍😊 Looking forwards to seeing if the Endorphin Pro 3 and the New Balance SC Elite can offer an upgrade to my line up for the autumn and perhaps the Metaspeed Sky 2 could be with us by then too?

Vaporfly is my favourite of the 3. I like the Streakfly too though I find it slower over most distances except maybe a road mile where the lighter weight of the Streakfly may give it the edge. Have never got on with the Alphafly which feel heavy and cumbersome and don't like the noise they make though if your into marathons they probably the best shoe.

I am sure those Nike shoes are great, but I have narrow feet and when ever I have tried them they always feel uncomfortable with that diagonal lace system. I have seen various runners on KZbin where the shoe looks distorted on the foot due to that lace system. Have to say I feel much more suited to the Adidas shoes and find them more comfortable for my feet.

The RC Elite is way more comfortable.. but in my experience not as fast. The RC Elite will suit many people, but the Alphafly won't because of comfort amongst other issues. The Alphafly works for me, so I'd pick that!

I’m training for the Vienna marathon. For shoes I have 4 in rotation: for speed sessions (anything from 1 mile to 200m repeats or fartlek) I use the Hoka Rincon 3, for easy and recorvery runs the Asics Gt 1000 10 or On Cloudstratus, for tempos and marathon efforts I use the Rincon 3 or my Carbon X 2 (which will be my marathon race shoe), and for longruns the Carbon X 2, very rarely the On. My favorite is the Rincon, but most comfortable is the Asics (I wouldn’t use it for anything faster than easy runs though) :)

I’ve never heard of somebody busting their Nike Air Zoom Tempo NEXT%. I use them for recovery runs and when the weather is bad but I never hit the front of those shoes hard. I hit the fronts in Alpha Flys. Anyway great video as always.

Hi Ben! Nice video again! I have an issue nowadays with choosing my marathon shoe, for Bilbao in 1 month now for 2:55 or less if possible: I bought a pair of Vaporfly Next% Gyakusou on sale, and it was my "natural" choice, but during a long training session (37K) they bruise my ankles 😥😥... a lot! I think it was due to the massive laces that they come with. I changed the laces and will give another chance to them... I have a pair of Vaporfly 4% in which I made Sevilla 2 years ago in 3:07:09, with 100k only, that may be an option. And I have also a pair of Tempo Next, that I have been using for training and to race last weekend. They are very confortable, and I was tending to usem them instead of Vaporfly until I watched you video until the end.. 🤔🤔 What do you think about this options? And the community, any opinions and experience to share? Next% or 4% or Tempo???? Thanks to you all!

Love the Tempo%. Could do everything in them. Had a pair of Gyakusou on sale, returned them. Toes and arch just get bloodied up even in a 12km run. Not for my foot. And the red colour was all over my white socks… seems more of a fashion shoe.

Nice video Ben. Those alpha flies were so loud in the london marathon, worn by 1000s of runners. My NB elite v2 were silent in comparison. That's a big part of the feel of running for me. I've been using the nike invincible run for my long run and they are also bordering on too noisy. Is it the foam, or the sole?

I get it. I’m the only person who seems to have found the sweet spot for the ZF4. #bigbonedflatfootedrunner. Maybe I should do my own video with all 4 Flys.

Evening hope all’s well with you both?I run a 10k yesterday in just under thirty four minutes (hilly coarse)so I intended to get a recovery run in tonight but I don’t seem to be able to slow down enough meaning I’m not getting the benefits of a slow run I just don’t know how you and the likes of Seth are able to change down your speed ? Hope this isn’t to garbled cp🏃🏻‍♂️
