Two sportswear brands dominate football. They dominate EURO2020 as well. Nike and Adidas have long been rivals. But does this summer’s European Championships have more riding on it than usual?
Matt Slater explains the recent history behind the rivalry between the brands, and how much the competition is worth to them.

Why do you (and too many other people) write "USMNT"? Why not just put USA? The MNT isn't necessary when you're discussing the men's game, as it's already a given that you're talking about a men's national team. Do you call every other international team the MNT? Are France the FMNT? Is the World Cup the MNTWC?

As a lover of football kits (and fashion) it sadly seems that the more the big 2 have to pay to sponsor a team, the less thought and detail they put into the design of the kits themselves. My guess is they want to streamline production, lower costs and max profits. Other than Belgium, Spain, Germany and Argentina, almost all Adidas teams have the same generic kit this year. Lets not forget Nike's atrocious template designs in 2016 either, with England, Portugal, Poland and USA having the same red kit. Wish they would at least put some more thought into it if you're gonna charge > $100.

I believe it also has to do with the following: more expensive teams also have the most history, and brands are less willing to experiment with their kits; if Nike designed something other than yellow for Brazil and people didn't like it there would be a civil war.

Honestly Nike is the worst. At least Adidas has been experimenting in the last few years (the retro jerseys in the 2018WC) and Puma has surprised us this year (I don't like those jerseys but at least it's something new). With Nike, it's always the same bland jersey with no detail

I like these Nike vs Adidas battles. Personally, I like both brands, although I prefer Nike sneakers. Lol. The most memorable moment for me was in 2014 when two Adidas teams (Germany and Argentina) made the World Cup final in the home of probably Nike’s biggest poster team, Brazil. And with Adidas sponsored Messi, widely regarded as the best player in the world by many at the time, in the final, what could go wrong for Adidas? Mario Gotze happened! He scored a sublime winning goal wearing Nike shoes, and oh boy did Nike try to steal Adidas’ thunder with that moment! Hahaha.

One underrated aspect is also the design of the kit. For example the black kit from germany in 2010 is still to this day a very popular kit just because of its looks. And people nowadays (myself included) would pay a lot of money for some beautiful iconic kits such as the purple kit from Arsenal in 2004, the barcelona kit in 2008 oder the manchester united kit from 2007. I think it was Nigeria in 2018 who had also a really special one.

Adidas supplied the US kits up until relatively recently. So that's actually an example of a country's team returning to their own country's kit suppliers. Although Nike had never made the US's kits before, as far as I know, so "return" probably isn't exactly the right word in this example.

yup same here, It's just that the BIG companies such as Adidas, Puma and Nike pay millions to national teams for sponsorships so then the local companies can't stand a chance. Good thing that Denmark and Germany use kit suppliers from their own country more authentic.

Brands like Adidas, Nike and to lesser extent Puma have the financial machine behind them and despite offering your generic teamwear for lesser profile teams, those teams would still flock to those brands. The reason why Italy hasn't gone with an Italian brand like Kappa, Macron or Errea is that these brands don't have the financial might to fight against Puma, let alone Nike or Adidas. Not only those smaller brands can't offer the big teams the big bucks, but also don't have the sophisticated store network (physical or online) the clubs could tap into - one of the reasons why Liverpool choose to ditch New Balance in favor of Nike was that they can tap into Nike's huge network of store, therefore selling (in theory) more shirts.

This may be a silly question but with all the money in shirt sales why hasn’t a club done it themselves? Obviously they’d need a lot of money to set up something like that but surely in the long run it would be worth it. If a company is willing to give you a 500m+ contract surely they’re making money on that and that’s money a club / FA could just make themselves? Has anyone already tried to do this..?

Even the biggest football clubs don't have either resources or time to mass produce and distribute their own kits. It would require a whole manufacturering plant, a designing team, an advertisement and marketing department, a dedicated HR, administration and finance department to set up something like that. The number of employees involved in production will become exponentially more than employees in sporting department. Most football clubs don't have the business expertise or experience to try that. But there are some smaller football clubs which have started to produce their own shirts and sell it regionally.

I think Nike have made a misstep sponsoring England - look at the fans in the crowd and so many wear retro Umbro shirts or replicas from the '90s and 2000s. I only see children wearing the new kits.

Adidas should never part with Germany, not only has there never been a bad kit the heritage is also very important. Kinda sad (as much as I like the current kits) that we dropped Umbro for Nike. It’s also disappointing for Italy to have a German brand when they’ve got the likes of Kappa, Diadorra et al.

I prefer Italy wearing Lotto or Diadora and the Netherlands wearing Puma because of Cruyff England should wear Umbro. England wearing Nike is like having an American actor playing James Bond. It would be cool if France wear Le Coq Sportif.

At 3:43 it says 'There will be someone who has worked out the balance sheet value of all of those mentions.' I know precisely who that someone is and I know exactly how this value is ascertained. None of this is worth it. Adidas don't sponsor Germany because it's good value for money, they do it because it would be humiliating to lose out to Nike. You can make any commercial justification you want and people will pretend that it's rational but the real reasons are social and psychological rather than financial.
