Niki Caro ('Mulan'): “We want to pay homage to the animation and experience it in a visceral way”

We spoke to the director of Disney's live-action 'Mulan', Niki Caro, and costume designer, Bina Dai, about paying homage to the beloved animation, the intricacy of costumes, how the music and romance of the original will feature in the film and why they chose to take on one girl's epic journey.

​@@LucasBR702 I don't know why people always compare it to the chinese market. Most chinese didn't grew up with the Disney animated Mulan, so they have no nostalgic sentiment for it. Second, I know this movie have been politicized, thats why I trust the professional critics more than the audience critics. Have you seen how audience rate the movie? Those are all anti-china shills and are political motivated, not to be trusted for a review of a movie. There are politics, and there a movies, you have to separate and distinguish the two.

​@@LucasBR702 ​ the positive reviews are from professional verified american critics. don't forget, Disney is an american company. Why would chinese care about reviewing a Disney movie? China could care less if the movie is a succes or not. An American company is going to lose money, not China. China has multiple remakes of the original Mulan folklore story already, so they are not waiting for a Disney version. So just because of the fact that americans critics have no relation or benefit from the chinese communist party, and they still give it a 75% rating, then that is even more amazing!

​@@LucasBR702 there is absolutely no proof of torture or genocide whatsoever discovered in these chinese camps. against america however there is loads of proof discovered of their torture of muslims, for example the abu graib prison camp. if there was proof, dont you think united nations or nato would sanction China? Just like they sanction Iran and North Korea? Because even NATO and United Nations are not sure, all the accusations are just rumors and not confirmed yet. all we know now are from witness accounts. as a refugee or separatist i would make my case as worse aswell if i want to cheat my way through immigration. so as long as there is no hard evidence, you should not discriminate china. you anti-china shills are delusional!
