You have to remember that Niki delivered on the improvement he put his neck on the line for. If he didn't, I have no doubt that he'd have been gone. You can't bad mouth Ferrari and get away with it without delivering. Ferrari are so far detached that SV would have been demoted to second driver by now after all these mistakes. Although it must be said they've only had the fastest car on the odd weekend. MB has had the advantage above and beyond in the main. The way F1 is, unless you have the overall fastest car, you're not winning the title.

Nothing to do with Lauda, but a fun story none the less. In the mid 50s a friend of mine's father was an exchange student living in Milan, Italy. He and a fellow exchange student wanted dearly to see or get a tour of the Ferrari factory and race shop at Maranello. They took a bus down, and tried to visit, but were told "go away stupid American kids" at the gate. So, disappointed, they went to a local cafe in the nearest town. After some time lamenting their misfortune at the local cafe, a somewhat familiar looking man who had been sitting quietly in the corner introduced himself. It was Phil Hill, who was of course a Ferarri driver that the time. He was charmed by the kids genuine enthusiasm and decided to make their day. He told them "come with me", and "do not say a single word once we get back to the plant". "I will tell them you are my nephews or some BS". "Keep your mouths shut". Phil was scheduled to tag along with a factory tour being leg by Enzo for some rich big-wig customer who was having a car built. So these kids got the full VIP tour, including seeing the customer's car being being built. After that was done, Phil took them for a drive around the test track in a VW bug, and then took them to the bus depot.

How good a circle of responsibility do you want. The driver states the problem, and says howmuch better it will be when it is fixed. The boss gets the propper people towards the driver to fix the problems with the clear message that there are consequences if it fails. The engineer fixes the problem. The driver delivers. The boss is pleased. Simple. Elegant. Straightforward.

Balls of steel! Not only a great pilot he was likely the best driver on setup and engineering knowledge. Niki stepped up every car he ever drove.

One of the rare few drivers that had the balls to tell it like how it is, RIP Niki you were a legend. A man that knew that he was living on borrowed time. It's remarkable how long he lived given his terrible injuries, which did eventually catch up to him.

Maybe sometimes a difficult man (I don't mean the Enzo Ferrari thing) but you have to admit: WHAT a man! Rest in peace, Niki! You changed the game!

This story alone, is perfect microcosm of what made racing so exciting and REAL back in the day. Racing drivers being racing drivers, all that mattered was going faster. Now it's all about who has better computer programmers and what makes the sponsors happy, heavily regulated by rules that don't allow for drivers to go all out, all the time. " If you're no longer going for a gap or trying to win, you're no longer a racing driver " - Ayrton Senna.
